TheMightyEthan
I'm guessing the Lite is the rumored update. It's not for me, but it makes sense. I'm also kind of glad they aren't making a Pro, because I would be so tempted to upgrade. I don't think the lack of a Wii Pro or a Wii U Pro is really much to go by though, because before this generation mid-gen upgrades hadn't really been a thing for anybody (unless you count the Sega CD). I can think of a couple of the shrines in Breath of the Wild though that would be almost impossible without being able to detach the joycons, because you have to move them around so much and with the joycons attached that means turning the whole console upside down or whatever. That is exactly what I did or something close to it. It's pretty doable. If 28/29 years old me can do it, a kid can.
TheMightyEthan
You are a stronger man than I. I played most of the game in handheld mode, but as soon as I got to one of those puzzles I'd pop off the joycons and set the Switch up on a table. CorgiShinobi
I played it on Wii U, so I got to experience turning a handheld device and looking at the TV.
deanb
I'd be down with something like the Switch Lite, assuming priced appropriately (current speculative pre-order listings put it about £50 less than a full blown Switch). Got my fill of "under the TV" type consoles in my PS4 n PC ticking pretty much all the boxes so Switch was never a huge appeal to me. But portable Skyrim/Witcher/etc is something those don't really do. And I know everyone be hating on it at the moment, but I'm up for a bit of Pokemon Sword/Shield. I'll be honest I can't see this tanking the price of the main Switch. And it's likely we'll see a refresh of the original Switch but not likely in some "Pro" mode, more along the lines of just refining the model, updating the guts etc. Pretty much the same with the "slim" variants of past few gens (which the Wii ended up with two, one that gutted the GBC parts and then the final "Wii Mini"). Especially with the Switch being handheld type unit, anything that can reduce power consumption is going to be a big priority over the ability to make a beefier console. Maybe a few design tweaks like changes to stand to help heat dissipation, kickstand a bit sturdier, maybe proper USB-C spec. But specific to my use case my bro got a Switch for xmas and has generally been a bit of a shit the past year so there's potential for a dirt cheap Switch at some point
TheMightyEthan
@deanb Nailed it! https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-07-17-new-nintendo-switch-version-will-have-longer-battery-life They're releasing a new Switch that performance-wise is basically the old Switch, but increased efficiency means it will get almost double the battery life (interestingly, they're not actually upgrading the battery, just making everything else almost twice as efficient).
Mister Jack
Damn it, I would still want a longer battery life but I bet they aren't offering any kind of trade-in program.

TheMightyEthan
I am honestly surprised by how happy I've been with the Switch's battery life. Every once in a while I've had to plug it in while playing in handheld mode, but those times have been few and far between.
Mal
I mean, I have a rather long USB C cable that I use in bed. For on the go, I got a powerbank. So overall I never had a problem with the battery life.
CorgiShinobi
I rarely play in handheld mode now a days. Even still, I too have a powerbank and it has been handy in the past for all kinds of devices. If I was ever in the car as a passenger, I could use my car charger which also works on my phone. MetalCaveman
So, currently, and until the end of August (I think), the current Switch version is $6589MXN, the new version is expected to go for about $9500MXN, does the new version offer anything other than better battery life and would it be worth it to wait for that one or just get the current one?
Mister Jack
It's pretty much just the battery life. If you don't expect to use handheld much then the cheaper one should be fine, but if you do then I think it'd be worth the extra money because the current model's battery is kind of average and isn't going to last you through a flight or a long car ride.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, my understanding is the actual performance is the same, but all the components are more efficient, so it doesn't go through the battery as fast.
TheMightyEthan
Digital Foundry has an analysis of the new Switch, and yeah it's pretty much just the battery life. They say the screen is different, slightly magenta-hued compared to the old Switch's slight yellow hue, but to their eyes the old Switch's screen looks like it has more accurate colors. They also say the new Switch has a little bit better memory bandwidth, which can result in slightly increased performance in certain places where the old Switch is bound by the speed of streaming data (such as Korork forest in BotW). But all in all it doesn't sound like it's worth upgrading for or spending more money on.
MetalCaveman
Yeah, I don't think I'll be taking it with me when travelling or anything like that, so it sounds like the cheaper version is the best choice. Thanks! \m/ \m/
TheMightyEthan
Does anyone know of any good third party Pro controllers? I've been playing on the TV enough recently with Fire Emblem that I'm starting to want one, but there's no way in hell I'm gonna pay $60 for the first party one...
CorgiShinobi
I mean, the Pro Controller is one of the best controllers I've ever used, but if you had to go third party. You have two options: PowerA Enhanced Wireless Controller 8BitDo SN30 Pro+ Those are the only ones I've heard constant praise for, though since the SN30 Pro+ came out recently, chances are that's the preferred controller now. It's for good reason since you can use it on multiple devices and it's rechargeable. Not to mention the form factor is excellent. The PowerA one requires two AA batteries and can technically work on PC through Steam. So yeah, if I had to choose between the two, it's the SN30 Pro+ for just a tad more money ($49 vs $39). Not to mention it does come in a Game Boy color variant.
CorgiShinobi
So speaking of Switch controllers, how about that SNES controller for the Switch! Comes out Sept. 18 for $30 and exclusive to Nintendo Online members. Of course, that'll be too late what with SNES games coming out tomorrow! Then we get Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury for Smash Ultimate and Banjo-Kazooie is available today! Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition for Switch next year. And Jedi Outcast?! So much good came out of this Nintendo Direct.

deanb
Does seem to have some active electronics in than just being a plastic ring that fits your joycons.
Mister Jack
Well if the bundle isn't crazy overpriced I might actually get this, more for the fitness reasons than the game itself. I actually lost somewhere between five and ten pounds doing Wii Fit on a regular basis (I forget the exact number) and if I can get those kinds of results here then that's a steal. I don't have enough space for any kind of workout machines and gym memberships are too expensive. I can't even really go jogging because I live in a bad area. The most I'd be willing to pay is maybe 79.99 though.
