On the unusual side, Switch cartridges have a bittering agent to prevent young/stupid kids from eating the cartridges.

Was that a problem with DS/3DS cartridges? Like, I commend Nintendo for the inventiveness, but have children actually swallowed cartridges before? I guess it would prevent pets from chewing on them too.

For better or worse, the dock and even the joycons can be revised Nintendo and replaced by early adopters. For a modest sum of course.

What cannot be easily revised and replaced is the stand and the USB-C port location. The stand is pretty flimsy and the location of the USB-C port doesn't allow for to be plugged in while on the stand. There needs to be another port on the sides, top or for an unconventional location, the back so the wire is not in your way. Either of these two fixes requires a new Switch. Not a deal breaker for me but it would be nice. What can be a deal breaker is the dock and joycon problems. I'll be waiting for what Nintendo has to say about the dock and to see if the patch fixes the joycon connectivity issues. If wireless controller is so important then that aspect should be flawless.

And Jack's post. Eh... come on Nintendo. You guys have successful models you can emulate. Oh wait, Nintendo hates emulation.

When you think about it, they really haven't changed a god damn thing about their policy.  The whole thing people want is to be able to download their games onto a new console if they have to replace it, and the only reason most people would have to do that is that their old switch got broken, lost, or stolen.  Oh, but wait, you have to deactivate the console manually before you download your games onto anything else.  How are you gonna do that if it's broken?  Guess you'll just have to call Nintendo up and beg them to help you, just like we've always had to do.

iFixit teardown shows it's actually quite well built from a repairabilty standpoint. Less so for end-users repairing it (but it's possible) but more so that it's easier for them to repair it at least. Interesting to note that the dock itself is largely just plastic, with a bit of circuit board for various ports (pretty much acting as a USB-c Hub really), so it doesn't need to be as large as it is which'd reduce the screen scratching issue. Also the storage is on it's own little dinky board, which'll make it easier for them to do larger storage capacity down the line without having to change too much (just make a bigger storage dinky board and put that into the pipeline). Still amazed this day n age it's only 32GB of storage.

Their main highlight issue is that the USB-C port, which is one of the main points of wear and tear failure, isn't easily replaceable as it's soldered into the main motherboard. Though I guess with the above, on a repairing side of things it means if anything on the mobo fries they can remove the storage, swap out the mobo then pop storage back on and you'll have all your games and info still on return.

It's weird it has such glaring issues as the dock scratching the screen yet otherwise seems pretty competently well engineered.

The Switch sold 80k units in the UK over launch weekend.  That puts it at double Wii U (which was 40k) but less than Wii (which was 105k).

So that's slightly promising, although since it was selling out most places it's hard to tell how close that is to the actual launch day demand for the thing.  It could be that they just about maxed out the market, or it could be there's still a bunch of people waiting to get one.

I'd say it wasn't much selling out if it was still to be found in Argos. Smaller shops selling out I'd guess is to be expected given they're always going to have in less stock that bigger shops. Dunno if it's sales figures that Nintendo is happy with, still selling less than the Wii and 3Ds at launch. Wii U was, given the terrible name and marketing, always going to suck.

edit:

Holy shit, Nintendo have managed to single down issues people are having with Joycon connection issues down to:

http://mobilesyrup.com/2017/03/06/nintendo-responds-switch-joy-con-controller-issues/

  • Cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc.
  • Wireless headsets
  • Wireless printers
  • Microwaves
  • Wireless speakers
  • Cordless phones
  • USB 3.0-compatible devices such as hard drives, thumb drives, LAN adapters, etc.

  • 3 weeks later...

Lego City Undercover for the Switch requires a 13GB download (though WB have said it's not required to play but still leaves a lot of questions)

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-03-28-fans-have-noticed-something-odd-about-lego-city-undercover-on-switch

For those unsure on the math that means if you get Lego City Undercover then without an SD card you'll lose around half your storage space.

The Switch already has a fan in it that powers on when it's docked. But yeah the dock seems really terribly designed and a major detractor for the console. It'll scratch the screen, if you put a screen protector on it gets hot enough inside the dock that it peels off, and now it turns out over time it slowly bends your console. Sweet.

It's really surprising because regardless of how you feel about how Nintendo designs their hardware, it's usually pretty solidly made.  I have an old game boy that still works.  I didn't think Nintendo would do a redesign of the Switch, but they might end up having no choice at this rate.

From following the iFixit breakdown the Switch itself is pretty solidly built and they've definitely taken into consideration the heating issues with the unit. It just seems the dock where it all falls apart with the majority of issues (the kickstand seems to be maligned a bit, but I hear part of the flimsiness is that it's designed to come off easily so as not to cause permanent damage if caught on something...such as when docking :P)

They do need some kind of cover on the front so the screen isn't exposed when docked (though they need to figure out how to do that without scratching the screen), but the back should be mostly open, just enough of a framework to stabilize it without insulating it.
