6.2" 720p multitouch screen.

It's smaller than I thought.  I would have thought it was 7".

Also, everybody probably already saw this, but Ninty isn't giving price or specific release date info until Jan 13.

Man that's a shitty quality screen, especially at that size. The original Shield came with a 720 screen at 5" and that'll be nearing 4 years old when the Switch is out.

I guess I kind of expect really really shit screens from Nintendo these days, but I figured with Nvidia in the mix it might be a 1080p screen at minimum.

The screen is about what I expected too.  720p at that size is shit compared to a cellphone, but really it's still perfectly fine.

@Cowboy: I really really doubt that there will be tablet-mode-only games.  I imagine the touch will be primarily for menus and stuff, and that while it may be more convenient for some things you'll be able to everything on the TV that you can do on the tablet.  Similar to how Vita TV handles things.

Vita TV handles things by having a controller with touch built in. I'm still down with the idea of that controller thing being similar to DS4 with the central bit being capacative. Touch is likely gonna include things being like Angry Birds n such. Be stupid to miss out on that.

Vita TV can't play a lot of the VIta's best games though. There's a huge percentage of Vita games that are handheld only. That's my worry for the Switch, that touch only games won't work on the TV. Unless it's for menu navigation but that seems like a big expense for something that's not necessary.

It would probably cost more to get a screen that doesn't support touchscreen though. Given that their portable MP games only use half the controller I'd guess there's going to be a lot of give on what is and isn't fully supported. Wii n Wii U are no different given the gamut of controllers available to the systems.

You don't have to have a touch controller on Vita TV though, you can do everything with a PS3 controller. Sure it doesn't support every Vita game, but it also wasn't released until several years after the Vita so lots of games used touch in a way that wasn't compatible with it. With the Switch though it'll all be released as one thing so they can plan from the get go for everything to support both modes.

Again, things could be made that work better with the touch, but that you *can* do without it.

If they downscale from say 900p to 720p for AA then it should more or less get rid of any jaggies. It's comparable to a 1440p to 1080p downscale in pixel increase (56% vs 78%). Image quality should be nice and crisp especially with Nintendo's in-house games. I'm just unsure if the tablet itself has enough power and battery to do it though. The trailer hints at the dock having quite the bit of processing juice.

I really doubt there's any actual processing capability in the dock (beyond possibly an upscaling chip), I'm sure any difference (if there even is a difference) in processing capability between docked and tablet mode is due to it going into a lower power mode to extend the battery life.  I'm also confident that any processing difference will be used just to increase the rendering resolution and possibly framerate while docked, not anything massively gameplay altering.

An interesting implication is that, if I'm right, you could get the same benefits in tablet mode just by plugging it in to a wall charger (though obviously there any increase in resolution would just work as fancier AA).

I think people are worrying about the processing power issue too much.  The Tegra is no slouch, and especially at 720p I think it will be able to do a lot more than people thing.  Just look at the Shield, which also runs on Tegra:  it does better at 1080p than the 360 can with same games at 720p, so if you take a newer, more powerful Tegra in the Switch, running games at 720p it'll be just fine.  It's not going to be PS4/Xbone quality visuals, but I don't think it necessarily needs to be.  Then add to that either an upsampling chip in the dock to sample the resolution up to 1080p (like how the PS4 Pro is doing 4k) or using a performance boost from being plugged in to render at 1080p native and I don't think there will be too much issue.

I also think Nintendo is making a mistake by marketing it as not a 3DS or Wii U replacement.  They should market it as a replacement for both.  That's a pretty good value proposition to parents to be able to say look, get this one thing and now your kids have their handheld for the car in addition to their home game system, you don't have to buy two separate things.

I disagree that it adds nothing of value, I would love to be able to go seamlessly from mobile to the big screen and back, and I really hope it catches on.

*Edit - Also, just for the the record, I voted "I want to hear more", so whoever voted for the Ethan one you are committing identity theft and I have already reported you to the FBI.
