TheMightyEthan
They announced months ago they were ending Wii U production this year.
Mr. GOH!
The Wii U was a pretty dismal failure. Why folks have faith in Ninty for the Switch is beyond me.
TheMightyEthan
I have no faith in Ninty, as much as I want to. I just really like their idea for the console. I'm coming off the release hype, and back to my original plan of just getting Zelda for the Wii U and upgrading my PC instead.

Mr. GOH!
Smart choice, Ethan. Even if it's any good (doubtful), might as well wait until more games are released. Is Ninty gonna discontinue the 3DS no that they're merging their portable and home console lines?
TheMightyEthan
As of right now they're still pretending this isn't a replacement for the 3DS. Really they're just hedging their bets, if the Switch takes off then they'll discontinue the 3DS with no replacement.
Mr. GOH!
I think its chance to replace the 3DS depends on its cost relative to the 3DS. I'm also curious if a lot of Ninty's mobile game lines will end up on the Switch, too.

"Third pillar" is "let's see if this flops or not".
TheMightyEthan
https://www.videogamer.com/news/nintendo-switch-base-model-to-sell-for-19999-sources-reveal Retailers are listing the Switch at $329.99CAD/£199.99, both of which are roughly $250 US. So that changes the calculation...
Thursday Next
What is a "Base SKU"?
TheMightyEthan
The base model. Like how the Wii U had a 16GB version and a 32GB version at first, the 16GB one was the base version. SKU is a term that has to do with inventory and keeping track of the various versions of things, kind of like a model number but not quite. Thursday Next
I know that a Base SKU is the most basic vanilla Stock Keeping Unit. I mean what is it in Switch terms. Is it the pad on its own with the removable sticks, the pad with the TV base? With the weird controller adaptor?
TheMightyEthan
Probably the pad + attachable side controllers + base station and Not Nearly Enough Storage. They said the next model up (which should be $50 more) will include a game and more storage, so my guess would be that's just the pad +side controllers + base station + game and Slightly More But Still Not Nearly Enough Storage.
TheFlyingGerbil
I think sub £200 is a tempting price for a new console, hopefully that will get people interested and it's probably an easy upsell to the premium. I felt the price differential for Wii U was fair so hopefully it will for the switch too once the contents are announced. Got to assume the skeleton pad is in there, at least in the premium as you'd struggle to call it a home console without that.
TheMightyEthan
I won't be surprised either way with the skeleton pad. But remember, this is the company that sold 3DS's without a charger cable.
TheMightyEthan
Alright, given the Zelda delay to June-ish I'm now tentatively planning to get a Switch when that comes out... But knowing me I'll probably buy it at launch on a whim anyway.
Saturnine Tenshi
That's really going to hurt their launch line-up.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I'm kind of surprised they didn't delay the Switch along with it.
TCP
How many times has Zelda been delay now? It was originally a 2015 game right?
TheMightyEthan
I think so, yes.
TheFlyingGerbil
Is the delay official now? I'm assuming if it is they'd be delaying it for both consoles.
TheMightyEthan
Yes, it's official, and I haven't seen anything to indicate it's only one specific version so I assume both versions are delayed.
TheMightyEthan
Specs are out. So there's no actually processing power in the dock, but the Switch GPU does run faster in the dock because it's running off the mains power there and battery life isn't a concern. Here's where I say I told you so. The CPU runs at the same no matter whether it's docked or not. The screen is 6.2 inch 720p with multitouch. The article makes a huge thing about the drop in GPU clock (undocked is 40% of docked) but doesn't even mention the fact that 720p is 44% of 1080p, which means it should have roughly (roughly) the same performance undocked at 720p as it does at 1080p. Considering the screen on the thing is 720p that makes perfect sense to me... They also don't mention the possibility that, since this is due to a power/battery life issue, it could run in "docked" mode whenever it's plugged into an AC adapter, whether or not it's actually connected to the TV dock. Mr. GOH!
Nice to know that the Switch is roughly as capable, graphics-wise, as a tablet or a terrible Android 'console'. It is refreshing, though, that Nintendo isn't hopping on the 4k gaming bandwagon.
TheMightyEthan
Welp, Zelda is back on as a Switch launch title, at least in NA and Japan. Apparently the reason for the delay to summer was to give Europe enough time to localize into all their various languages, but at the end of December Japan decided fuck Europe, the Switch needs Zelda at launch. The upshot for me is that now I guess I'm getting a Switch at launch.
