Nier: Automata

It's good to see that you don't need to be a blockbuster success with cliche-ridden, hooded douchebags posing all over the place to get a sequel. Sometimes.

Nier was one of the coolest neglected games of last gen, and I'm really glad to see that enough people agreed to warrant this title. The game's visual aesthetic seems to have made the transition to this generation beautifully, and the gameplay seems to be largely intact and with some enhancements. In other words, as far as trailers go I'd say this is about as encouraging of a trailer as I could possibly hope for.

I was surprised to see the protagonist wielding dual Odachi, but it's been some time since I played Nier, and maybe there were some sort of Japanese (or more broadly/vaguely Asian) quality to the decor that I just don't remember. Automata seems not to be terribly far into development though, so they may even be placeholders. Either way, they look pretty badass.

Good, now I just need to know whether it's necessary to have finished the first one or not. I never finished it and have no desire to go back to it. Maybe if they remaster it but that's a big if.

Also, good to see S-E finally announcing a PC port prior to launch (and releasing day and date, too). Hopefully that'll be how they do things going forward.

If by fine you mean the best game on PS3. :D

If by best game on PS3 you mean game I quit halfway through because it just wasn't fun. :P

Also, apparently the game has an auto mode that takes care of the fighting for you, so that anyone can enjoy it for the story even if they can't handle Platinum's glorious combat. I wonder if this game is niche enough to fly under the radar and avoid the idiotic outrage this kind of news usually causes. There's already some rustled jimmies on NeoGAF but those guys can be... let's go with "special".

I remember after having Nier recommended to me, and I think picking it up kinda cheap, that I kinda drifted off from it part way through. I think it was the travel that did me in. Oh n some weird text-based mission that was kind of annoying n obscure. I dunno, I could give it another spin some point.

I don't understand why people care about that kind of thing. If it bugs you then don't use it, why do you care how other people play their electronic toys?

Because they're Real Gamers™ and anything that compromises the integrity of their sacred hobby by being inclusive to less skilled players (or, you know, people with fucking handicaps) is Sacrilege™ of the highest order.

Yeah, picked it up after folks from here were raving about it. Unlike you, though, I loved the more experimental elements of it. That stuff was great. It was the moment-to-moment gameplay that killed it for me. I remember the exact moment I stopped, too. It's one of the only games I can remember actually making a conscious decision to drop. I lost against a boss and had no desire to replay the entire dungeon that led to it, which made me realize I wasn't enjoying the game all that much.

I kinda want to give it another shot, though. Especially given what I've heard about NG+. It's why I'm kinda hoping they'll remaster it. I'd really like to know how necessary it is for the sequel. Given how fantastic Automata looks, it would make the difference between waiting and hoping for a remaster vs looking for my disc and actually turning on my PS3.

I can see why that rubbed you the wrong way. I didn't have a problem with it, but it's hardly perfect. And God those blurry textures were the one thing I'll never argue in favor of. As far as NG+ is concerned, there are four different endings you can get (one of which will result in your save file being deleted, so you may want to make plans for that one being last). The NG+ content provides some gnarly new perspectives on the path you follow to saving your daughter, that's for sure.

Oh, if you can't stomach the game, you should give the soundtrack a listen.

Popped my disc in (paid £6 for it if anyone is curious). I'm 22hrs in, level 20. Currently at the town in the desert. Current goal is on the other side of the map in some mountains, though no idea what that goal actually is, or the relevant quest. I'd totally have to start over again at this point :P. I do remember the combat being kind of clunky.
