toxicitizen
So, I put a bit over 10 hours into the game since Friday and overall thoughts are pretty positive so far. It plays a lot more like the original than I expected. If you're apprehensive because of Platinum's involvement, don't be. This is still an action RPG. It controls like a character action game but doesn't really play like one. There's no deep combo system (or any kind of move list that I can find) and you're not ranked after each combat encounter. The PC port has a few issues but is still pretty solid, they just need to patch it up a bit. Performance isn't great, though. Even on low I couldn't hold 60fps, it was almost constantly hovering around 45. I only managed to get a near constant 60 by lowering the resolution to 900p, which is disappointing but I can live with it. The poor performance isn't a PC-specific problem, though, that's just the game. It runs about as well as it does on PS4.
Saturnine Tenshi
I was sort of wary due to the PC problems. I may end up getting it on PS4 anyway. With Prime I can get it for 20% off. Good to hear it plays like an action RPG. Wasn't sure what to make of the whole Platinum involvement.
toxicitizen
Well, that's ending A and ending B completed. Route B did a few really neat things but ultimately I'm not sure if I got enough out of it to justify an entire new "playthrough". I think it's comparable to what Nier did with new game plus but there's an extra twist to it, which ended up being the best part of route B for me. It sounds like route C is where shit will get real, though. I've seen some vague, non-spoilery reactions to it that were encouraging and what little I do know about it has me pretty excited to check it out tonight. So far, the game is a pretty solid 8/10 based on the two routes I've played alone. If the remaining routes actually live up to what I've been hearing, it could easily become a 9 or even a 10. This is such a far cry from that little cult favorite action RPG that had interesting ideas but utterly mediocre gameplay lol. If Yoko Taro ends up continuing either Nier or Drakengard in the future and he doesn't do it with Platinum, it's going to feel like such a massive step back. toxicitizen
Holy shit... holy shit, you guys! This game. This fucking game! I just played the opening of route C and now there's just one question in my mind: Kojima, is that you under there?

Mal
They're not that adorable when you go into a random elevator and the door open up to a bunch of zombies robots twice your level. Never before has dodging work so well and so beautifully. Seriously, it's one of the best ones I've ever come across. You phase out and come back in via one of your image doubles. Or you can come back in the air for a ground pound. Or knock them into the air and you teleport again to do an air combo (might be mis-remembering this one which may be a combo which launches them into the air which you can then either jump or dodge into it). Those robots were mercilessly destroyed. They're machines, they don't have feelings. They're just nuts and bolts. Just nuts and bolts. I think... MetalCaveman
Original Nier getting a reprint in Europe, was hoping for a digital release as then it'd be easier to get, also unknown if it'll be only Europe or if other regions will follow. What the fuck are they trying to accomplish here? Higher ups at Square-Enix see that people still love Iwata even after his death and they want in on it or something? I mean, I can accept a one-time thing as just being a joke but this is their second big release in a row to do something like this. It has to be an idea that's coming from the top and it's just fucking weird.
Saturnine Tenshi
Yeah, I don't get it. Those guys mean nothing to me. I know I'm not big on either company to begin with, but even in the spirit of fun you'd think it'd be someone more recognizable. Like Yoko Taro if he were into his face being plastered all over. Just seems narcissistic in this case.
deanb
Is it possible they're more well known in Japan? Also first I'd heard on them being in FFXV, but seems it was done for some special closed showing of the game.
Saturnine Tenshi
I dunno. Speaking of: Inafune was in Neptunia, but I think that better suits the mood.
toxicitizen
What in the holy name of shit?? I don't know if that makes me want to hurry up and play the other Neptunia games already or just delete them from my Steam account altogether. That shit is creepy as hell. @deanbmmv I guess it's possible but I would assume it's probably more like here where the creators would be the most well-known to fans and not the executives. This just reeks of an ego thing. Like Tenshi said, having Yoko Taro in the game would make slightly more sense than the CEO of the company. I'm a huge Platinum fan and I don't even recognize their CEO.

danielpholt
So I've just finished ending B and holy motherfucking god what was that preview? Craaazy! As much as I want to jump head first into C, I'm away next week and have work before then; I just won't have the spare time. It's going to be a very long 8 days.
toxicitizen
No no no, you gotta jump right into route C! Trust me on this, route C is where shit gets real.
Eleven
What's the connection between Nier and Nier Automata? Is it the same world? I haven't played the first game but I'm pretty sure they're human. I just started Automata and I'm sure I haven't seen any humans yet, except for that commander's voice in the beginning. Is it something you'll find out later, or just a little thing referenced that you'll see if you played the first game? Or maybe it's not mentioned at all? toxicitizen
It's a sequel set in the same world but thousands of years (I wanna say 10,000?) in the future. I don't know how far in you are or when it's mentioned exactly but the basic premise is that humans are hiding out on the moon because of the alien invasion. Any questions you might have beyond that will be addressed in the game. The connection between OG Nier and Automata are fairly minimal as far as the main plot goes. You'll get more out of it if you're familiar with it but you can still play and enjoy Automata just fine without. Personally, I recommend watching a story recap on youtube. You'll learn everything you need to know with a minimal time investment. And, more importantly, you won't have to play the original Nier which is honestly not a good game. Youtuber Clemps did a pretty thorough and informative one, if you can tolerate cringy humor. Edited May 22, 2017 by FLD
