TheMightyEthan
The ME2 box is hand-drawn/painted, and the foreshortening is terribad. Look at Miranda's arm, or the gun Shepard is holding. The content of the picture isn't awful, but it's really poorly executed.
Faiblesse Des Sens
The US art goes for broader appeal than actually being "art" is the whole thing. It's just a marketing method. They definitely don't want to turn anyone off their product.

RadiantViper
I think the ME2 cover is bad for a few reasons ... namely the colouring, the stupid poses, and fugly default Shep. The Collector's Edition art is sweet ... then you find out it's only on a flimsy cardboard holding box (the actual tin case also has default Shep on it. BLEH)
HotChops
I don't like the box art for ME2 because it screams "GUNS AND WAR!!11!!" whereas the first game's cover said, "Check me out. I'm a badass space opera. Explore me."
Faiblesse Des Sens
Guns and war sells better than space opera
Battra92
I present you with Spiritual Warfare. Fact: You are not a guy in a suit of armor. Fact: You toss fruit at sinners. Fact: It is a Christian game, made by Wisdom Tree, not licensed by Nintendo. Fact: The title of the game could be a Call of Duty Sequel. Fact: Err Opinion! It's actually a pretty good game. Anyway, here we go: Slap this is a green box and we have a generic 360 cover art. Did he just fart out treasure?

Little Pirate
There's something SO unimaginative about slapping the main character on a game cover with no background.
TheMightyEthan
This box art would have turned me off to this game if word of mouth hadn't said it was awesome.

Yantelope
MGS3 american box art was so out of line with the rest of the series and definitely a step down from the Japanese box art. I don't know why we have to create crappier box art for America.

I don't know why we have to create crappier box art for America. Because America is anti-intellectual. Because if a game tries to openly be artistic and clever, the general public thinks that it's being superior and aloof, and refuse to have anything to do with it. Because, sadly, our country kinda sucks, Yan.

Showmeyomoves!
Fugly cover is fugly. It's a shame, cause I really love that artist (Adi Granov). I think collages are just not his thing.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Oh yeah, i've seen his covers before. Quite good. It's a shame the MVC3 art sucks so much.

Because, sadly, our country kinda sucks, Yan. I don't think that's completely accurate, but I'm struggling to find hard evidence one way or the other. If you examine the change between Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2's multiple box covers, you could say that Americans do prefer macho-ism and firearms. As for MGS, I'm not even sure what it's Japanese box art was. Between that and Subsistence, I'm finding five different boxarts online. Is this the Japanese cover? If so, then how do you explain the popularity of the American versions of MGS2 and MGS2 Substance? I don't think it's purely an American thing. I think Europe is similar. I've spent the last 15 mins examining my game collection going back to 1980 and the vast majority of them (Japanese or otherwise) have an armed protagonist on the front. If people are turned off by artistic and aloof covers, maybe it's for other reasons. Perhaps when it comes to paying $60 or more for a game they want an image that's a little bit more concrete. I can't really speak for myself personally. I've never purchased a game based on its cover. I've always known what the game is like beforehand. deanb
I'd say angry Kirby does show that American marketing does tend to go with the more macho-aggressive type covers.
Showmeyomoves!
Heh, yeah that's the same example that popped into my head. Another example is Spirit Tracks. Edited January 7, 2011 by Showmeyomoves!

ROFL. oh yeah, I forgot about angry Kirby. But you could argue that the American version conveys Kirby's attitude better than the Japanese one. I've always seen Kirby as a violent, malevolent, world-destroyer.
