Battra92
I'd say angry Kirby does show that American marketing does tend to go with the more macho-aggressive type covers. Well Americans do have a fetish for gay space marines so maybe Kirby thinks if he can be angry some Americans will like him. Zelda suffers from the fate of bad US box art: Exhibit A: US Box Art JP + EU Boxart (same image) I'm tempted to import the UK version to get the superior cover art. HotChops
I like the American Phantom Hourglass art better. In part it's the symmetry, but more because the other one is just meh.
TheMightyEthan
I like some things about the US box art, and some things about the JP/EU box art. I can't decide which I like better overall. And I do like the US Spirit Tracks box art.

TheMightyEthan
I think it looks pretty cute and cartoony on the US box too... But yeah, I do like the cell shaded Zelda style a lot.
Yantelope
I like the US Phantom Hourglass cover better. Seems more artistic. I'm not against changing the box art, I'm against changing the box art because some pencil pushers in marketing ran some focus groups. deanb
http://www.1up.com/d...ure?cId=3183101 It's an entire pre-made list of 2010's worst on show. Also this was pretty funny: Becomes (Oh I'm only up to that point btw, there may be "better" ones later on) edit: getting further on some of these aren't so much terrible, as just silly or stuff. Some are pretty bad mind. The Tractor simulator one's actually a pretty okay one. I'd say it may even be "Fantastic Boxart". It tells you what the games about and is eye catching (not many cases have Tractors on them)
deanb
IGN watermark on the shoulder on the official boxart (with a wrench in the library) Since it seems some folks didn't spot what I was getting at with the Okami boxart here's one that makes it a tad more obvious. excel_excel
Yeah the Orange Box box art (feels weird saying box twice) should have been way cooler, this is a pretty awesome shop. Although even it could be improved The Portal 2 box art is.......ok. Its just weird, it seems to emphasis the fact that your playing as a jumping robot going through portals....the MVC3 box art is too cluttered. Something smaller with just Ryu and Ironman going at it would have been better. Resi 4 American box art sucks.... ....compared to the fantastic EU box art. TheMightyEthan
Dean are you sure that's the actual, official Okami boxart, and not a mockup someone else shopped?
Vargras
Dean are you sure that's the actual, official Okami boxart, and not a mockup someone else shopped? It's the real thing. I've seen it mentioned a few times before. Also, for Excel, I think the Orange Box artwork was fine. The shopped image you posted, while nice looking, places far too much emphasis on Half-Life 2 (when the Orange Box was a collection of 3 games, all of them good). TheMightyEthan
Half-Life 2 Half-Life 2: Episode 1 Half-Life 2: Episode 2 Team Fortress 2 Portal Seems pretty Half-Life heavy to me. Plus, I think at the time Half-Life was the selling point of the game for most people, so it makes sense that you would emphasize it. The real box art for The Orange Box is just so bland. It just screams "lazy-ass repack of games we'd already released" (even though I know Portal was new and TF2 and the HL episodes hadn't been released on console before). It just screams "lazy-ass repack of games we'd already released" (even though I know Portal was new and TF2 and the HL episodes hadn't been released on console before). Even if it is "bland", it's still fairly informative. Just by looking at the front of the box, you know what's in it. You know what you're getting. With that photoshop job, Portal isn't even on the front at all. The only place you even see it is on the back. The Team Fortress 2 line-up is tiny compared to the GINORMOUS Gordon and Alyx. Also, as a side note: Ginormous is apparently an actual word now. Firefox didn't underline it as an incorrect spelling.
deanb
Yeah the Orange Box is pretty bland, but I don't think the photoshop is much better. As for ginormous http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ginormous Merriam-Webster added it several years ago. Oxford however afaik does not recognise the word officially. Faiblesse Des Sens
Resi 4 American box art sucks.... ....compared to the fantastic EU box art. This is another case of trying to get the person who walks by to be interested. "OH MAN LOOK AT THAT CHAIN SAW THAT GUY LOOKS SCARY" vs "...what the hell is this? Oh, it's a resident evil game." Plus, given how RE4 actually played... the US art is more accurate.

What's awesome is if you send an email to Capcom about it they sent these glorious Okami mini-posters to you. I wish I remembered where I put mine. I know I found them in the move ... Cybronx
This whole game is an embarrassment, frankly. I remember reading up about this game and just shaking my head after the developers made awful choice after awful choice. I mean come on, Jet Brody? He must eat snowboards and piss Mountain Dew. The "between the legs shot" is just the final nail in the coffin. Edited January 28, 2011 by Cybronx
