First official look at Pokemon GO. I'm sort of interested in it. I'd given Ingress a bit of a go but was all overly confusing ARGness so this at least I know the "story" of. Be itneresting to see how much it gets screwed up with microtransactions.

Well then di..di...di...digimon.

I've gone on a round trip outside my house and skirting the Town Moor, got a few pokemon. Surprisingly few pokemon in the "grassy" areas, mostly in houses n such. Also unsure how it scales up in getting the more uncommon stuff, so far have Weedles, Pidgeys, Rattatas mainly; the usual early start stuff. Though I did have a Koffing on my radar once (well, as in the "Nearby" thing, not in the player location circle thingy).

It's a bit slow is my only major issue I guess, like in getting pokemon and being able to find them. I'll be walking into town later this week so I'll see how it fairs in more densely packed areas. Need to be level 5 to be able to start taking over "Gyms", which'll likely be the main part of the game.

Worth noting like Ingress it's main thing is to get you up n walking about, it's a Google Maps dataminer in the shape of a game. So if you're not up for having a gander around town, or visiting other places (I've got two trips away planned this month so I'm sorted) then you're a bit effed and it won't be for you.

I wish there was a little more built onto the base model I guess. The ability to fight your friends or trade with them.

Its already gotten me out of the house once, but if I've got a day trip planned I'd really rather not spend the entire time looking at my phone collecting digital Pokémon.

I'll stay with it, cause it can still be fun but I'm thinking its a little too limited at the moment.

That's what the very expensive bracelet is for.

She has a KindleFire but is paranoid about using sideloading n "getting banned". But we're pointing out no one is getting banned for using a OS function on an app that's launched and made by devs owned by the OS owners, and funded by the OS owners.

edit: We had a group chat set up to coordinate Team Yellow efforts but have outside of that chat decided to stop posting about our progress cos iOS is getting pissy n whiny about being "left behind", when we've noted it's like half an hour of walking around and she'd be caught up (and given she's out of work atm she's got that time). In this particular instance I have little empathy.

@Misterjack: Housemate had similar issues too, though he was like trying shit like "Piere" n such rather than a unique online name.

@TFG: Android Police have reported it rolling out in US n UK as of this morning. Seems it's regional, then device based roll out so give it a bit but should be out for you by tonight I'd imagine.

@Dan: Not entirely like that. Less an issue of Android vs iOS and more that we're all playing n being like "we joined Team Instinct, n caught a Koffing n wooh adventures" n shit, and she's the girl outside the window looking in. She did eventually give in and try to load it on her Kindle, but turns out it doesn't have a rear camera so no-go.

Can't she turn off the AR mode?

There are a few things about this game I don't quite get.

1) What's with the green circle inside of the wild pokemon?  Is that just for show or is it a timing based thing for when you're supposed to hit it with the ball?

2) The app does notify you when a pokemon is nearby even if your phone is on standby, right?  I was walking around earlier with my phone in my pocket and didn't find a single one.

3) Are pokemon locations randomized?  Or am I actually going to have to go to the beach to get a water type?

4) Do day/night cycles affect spawns?

This is the first time I wish a mobile game had a manual.

1. Green circle (which is also yellow, orange and red in level of difficulty) will earn you "Nice" "Great" "Perfect" if you nail it that zone, holding down the pokeball shrinks it (until it then enlarges again), and if you spin the ball you get a sparkle n curve on it too, which I believe also get more XP.

2. Nope, game needs to be on to alert you, and also to count distance walked to hatch eggs. Turn on "Battery Saver Mode" in the settings, put phone upside down and it darkens it, then stick an earbud in and walk around. You'll get a vibrate for pokemon, and a sort of beepey tone for Pokestops (with lower pitched when you walk out of range). The amount of footsteps (from 0 to 3) is the range to the pokemon, you can triangulate. The pokemon are sort of location based, so in the local park area we've found Nidorans, Caterpies n such, and nearby in more built up street area it's like pidgeys n rattatas. And yeah near water is usually water types. It also changes at night, just like real pokemon. So yeah you won't complete your pokedex sitting on your ass (the entire aim of the app is getting folks travelling around)

3. Oh I guess I covered that above.

4. Oh same again.

I guess for the above: Now is a time to pick up a battery pack. They're extremely affordable these days (some companies even throw out branded ones like the trend for branded USB sticks), and well worth having in the modern survival toolkit.
