Persona 5

So, someone hacked the Atlus Japan website and for a little while it looked like the release date as well as confirmation of a PC version had leaked. I am pretty glad I woke up late today. It was already debunked by the time I heard about it, so I didn't have time to actually believe and get all my hopes and dreams crushed in one fell swoop. :(

Aaaaa man, that trailer! Playing this on PS3 is going to be such a bittersweet experience. :(

The NEO could very well be out by this game's release, would you consider getting an original PS4 if it was discounted? Also has the PS3 version been announced for NA? I'm not sure if they'd even release it here.

It occurred to me that the PS3 version could potentially be a Japan-only thing but we'll see. If it doesn't come out over here, there's nothing I can do about it. :/

Also, what makes you think the NEO will be out by then? It hasn't even been officially announced. But anyway, at this point I'd probably just go for the NEO, to be honest. Assuming I have a job by then, there'll be no reason not to get the newest model. So, yeah, hopefully you're right. It would suck if P5 came out way before the NEO lol.

There's a lot of rumours/speculation that the NEO will be out alongside PSVR in October. Obviously nothing is confirmed.

Especially if P5 isn't coming out in 2016 in the west, if it's out after holiday 2017, I just can't see a PS3 version coming out. For your sake, I hope I'm wrong.

All games will be BC on Neo, but beginning in October all PS4 games released must have a separate Neo executable that runs at a native resolution of at least 1080p and performs as well as or better than the PS4 classic code.  So basically the same disc will work in both consoles, but if you stick it in a Neo it'll run a different exe.  Devs can patch their games released prior to that to also support the special Neo mode, but if they don't it'll just run it in the regular PS4 classic mode.

Welp, just woke up to an email in my inbox. Game isn't coming out until Feb 14th 2017 in NA. There's a PS4 exclusive Premium Edition, which I kinda want even though it comes with a fucking steelbook.

A PlayStation 4-only “Take Your Heart” Premium Edition will be available for $89.99 / CA$109.99. It includes:

  • Soundtrack CD: A selection of music from Persona 5 by legendary series composer Shoji Meguro in a CD wallet featuring P5 artwork.
  • Morgana plush: Morgana the cat is not just the mascot of the Phantom Thieves, but is also a member—and also not just a cat! The premium edition includes an exclusive 4″ plush of Morgana.
  • 64-page hardcover art book: This art book is full of concept sketches, character art, and more by character designer Shigenori Soejima.
  • SteelBook: As strong as a vault, the game disc for the PS4 will come specially packaged in a SteelBook collectible case, emblazoned with Persona 5 designs.
  • School bag: Designed after the traditional school bags in Japan, the exclusive replica bag comes complete with the Shujin Academy crest.
  • Collectible outer box: Easily the largest premium edition in Atlus’ history, the entirety of the “Take Your Heart” Premium Edition comes in a colossal collectible box.

Oh and the PS3 version is still happening.

Probably due to licensing issues. These things can get pretty tricky in Japan, from what I hear. Just a few months ago, there was a Japanese Steam release whose pre-order bonus went from full to partial soundtrack at the last minute because of such issues. Can't remember which one it was, either Danganronpa or Disgaea.

Similarly, the Trails/Kiseki games have all been getting enhanced Vita remakes in Japan with new soundtracks and voice acting. And there's so many different companies involved that it's become a complete clusterfuck of licensing to the point where XSEED have straight up said there's no way they could ever touch them.

Okay, I've been taking a "wait and see" approach to Persona 5.  I'm one of the cranky guys who always felt Persona 4 was a step down from 3 so I wasn't necessarily on board with the direction the series was heading in and no amount of high quality art stills was going to sway me.

NOW I'm on board though.  I have waited and seen, and now this looks amazing.  The reasons:

1.  The enemies are now all the SMT monsters.  This is good both because the SMT demon database is amazing but more importantly this is a fix from the real lack of unique/meaningful enemies in Persona 3/4.  They desperately needed more enemy variety in those games.  This will have that.

2.  In the old battle system you just spammed enemy weaknesses and knocked them down and it was all offense all the time.  In the new one they still have the weakness into extra turn mechanic, but now you can spend that 1-more bonus turn to convey buffs to a party member of choice.  This is an upgrade in strategic turn managing from the past games.

3.  The main story dungeons are all fixed designs which means there can be more specific puzzle/environmental content.  But now there is ALSO a giant randomly generated dungeon you can hit up for grinding/side questing/whatever.  This is again a fix from the PS2 Persona games - the randomly generated story dungeons often blew and there wasn't anywhere else to go.

So now let's get hype!  Not because "IT'S PERSONA 5!!" but because it looks like there are some smart fixes and improvements over the previous games.  Hooray!

Yep, there's full party control.  It's confirmed in footage released over this past month.  You've got the full menu for each character.

In general I wouldn't worry about questions along the line of "Is Persona 5 going to have potentially alienating annoyances ironed out?"  Persona only got big when it got accessible, and Atlus has way too much riding on this to risk losing people because it's hard.  Super easy mode, full party control, a non harsh death penalty, you'll get all of that and you'll also get waifus and a ton of anime cutscenes and mad production value.

On my end I was worried that the core turn based gameplay systems wouldn't hold up because of all the focus on other elements of the title.  Fortunately now that we finally have news on how the game systems work it's looking good on that front.
