Dawn of War

Dawn of War III announced. Will be a bit of both the past two games, with larger armies and bases but still having the levelling elite unites. Seems they'll be bringing in some of the Titans too that have been (relatively) recently introduced into the 40K miniatures.

Only the three armies (at least announced) which is a bit of a bummer but always hope for more down the line.

Loved this game in uni, quite liked the sort of RPG-shift it saw in Dawn of War II as well though took an initial getting used to. Either way it's shit ton cheaper than the miniatures.

(Personally I also think the Dawn of War cinematic was much better than this one)

Dawn of War II was pretty solid too, if just for the tyranids

Eldar Orks and Space Marines only, huh? I would hope for Chaos and Dark Eldar, too, at launch. Or at least the Tyranids, for variety. I understand a lot of the races in the DOW1 expansions are controversial among fans, so I wouldn't expect them in the base game. (Right? Don't folks hate the necrons and tau?)

I really need to get around to catching up on this series. Whenever I replayed the original, I always lost interest at the first expansion. I should probably just skip ahead to DoW II at this point.

And yeah, GOH, there's way too many cool races in 40K to just leave it at those three. :(

I was never able to fully complete the first campaign, some weird bug. Didn't grab the Imperial Assault expansion, but did grab the others and quite liked...either Dark Crusade/Soulstorm (or bit of boths) campaign that played out through multiple enemy types and had a more active map. Was pretty neat.

DOWII changes it up a fair bit, you now have named units and throughout the campaign gain "Wargear" which you can equip for special abilities and boosts, as well as abilities through levelling up iirc. It's not so much maps with one side and another, but they're linear maps you progress through with objectives along the way (I guess the first Campaign had elements of this). I quite enjoyed it. The Retribution expansion had a bit more of the Dark Crusade/Soulstorm style campaign where you have multiple locations you can choose to take, which iirc did give a bit of choice to how it all panned out. Had the space hulk to fight on too which was pretty neat. And iirc at the end of the story it was all for shit anyway cos Chaos got in on the action.
