... What? My complaint is that the medallion is dumb because it makes me mindlessly press z every once in a while. It's boring and dumb game design. It has nothing to do with how positive the effects of pressing z mindlessly is: it could turn everything around me into gold, it would still be a mindless and repetitive task.

I'm on the second act and I know what to look for now in terms of doors, items, etc, so I rarely use it. It gives you hints for places of power (medallion vibration) which is the only thing you need to activate it for. Everything else can be seen, just not easily such as traps, corpses, etc. That's how it was in the first game, too. After a while, I didn't bother much with the labels.

Enhanced Edition pre-downloader now ready. It'll grab 10GB of the patch now (a bit more if you want it in other languages) and then the final few hundred megabytes on the 17th.

The 17th is the day you can get the Witcher 2 backup too.

(oh and it's the day it goes multi-plat too, so you 360 guys better be picking it up)

Digital Foundry look at Witcher 2 on PC and 360. Obviosly PC blows the 360 out the water, but damn is it a pretty decent port (it looks like they've even gone in and retextured parts too to keep the detail up.)

Ok for those who are somewhat veterans in this game. Any tips you can give me? I've heard too many things about this game being hard to attempt anything beyond normal on the first playthrough.

Keep in mind that apparently the Quen [?] spell has been nerfed so telling me to put all my points on that wouldn't be as obvious as before. From what I see in the other recommendations, I should focus on blade and magic. Some people don't recommend I put points on parry but what do you guys think?

I think that maybe, just maybe, the EE update might be fucked.

edit: Looking about this is basically an issue with the EE patch itself, but not necessarily the EE version. So if you use the backup on GOG it should run fine (which I'm downloading now). If you're going to be patching: hold off.

ugh, maybe I'll just go get the backup. Apparently that's the only true DRM free version anyway.

And the retail version. Steam version is the only one with DRM.

@Ethan: http://www.gog.com/witcher2/backup/

(I linked it, along with a few other bits n bobs) on the previous page.

Well, all those other versions have the DRM patched out by the 1.1 patch. The GOG version has no DRM. They said something about it at the presser.

From what I understood, they may have nerfed Quen a bit but it is still very useful. The big change was regarding stamina and blocking, I think; putting a greater emphasis on blocking, parrying and dodging by allowing you to do it more frequently. I would consider the parry, countering stuff pretty essential but then I haven't played it since a few updates back.

Wow, people actually bought this on Steam? I thought we were supposed to be the well informed minority?

Anyways, I'd get the counter attacks and stuff and the group attack, but then from there you don't necessarily need anything else from the sword category unless you want it. I think as long as you really do focus on one area to a large degree your build should be fine.

Steam has ridiculous sales. Also Steam DRM doesn't bother me, so it's not incentive to purchase it elsewhere.

Though actually I didn't buy it on Steam, I had it gifted. But those are reasons I might have bought it on Steam anyway.

What about supporting the developers?

At the same price, sure I'd buy it straight from GoG instead of Steam, but I wouldn't go out of my way to pay extra for it on there.. Even though I'm sure they get less from a Steam purchase than a GoG purchase (obviously, as they get all the money from a GoG purchase) it's not like they don't get anything.
