The Witcher

Mechanically the two are quite different games. Witcher 1 was built on (I forget the proper name) the Neverwinter Nights engine, with Witcher 2 CD Projekt RED made their own "RED Engine" which completely change the game in how it looks and plays.

As Tenshi says, only got under a fortnight to get through it. Worth giving a spin if only cos your choices will carry over (if only partially. It wasn't too distract except starting items and bumping into a couple people in Witcher 2. Most choices affect the game internally)

That's quite the tits... I want to be hyped for this game but I never got into The Witcher 1. Mechanically, I'm not too sure if I like it. It failed to click twice. Should I just move on to the Witcher 2 since I already have the game?

Fist time I finished Witcher 1, well, it was a chore. The game is unbearably long and quests often can be a bit iffy on telling you what to do next, so yeah, it's understandable why you couldn't get into it.

However, fast forward to January this year, when I decided to start the series all over, and this time around I was hooked right from the start. Right from the opening action sequence I felt like I'm playing a really good RPG, on par with anything bioware has ever made. The characters, atmosphere, dialogue, lore - everything top notch. Also, the voice acting, but I was playing it in the original polish, which sounds much more folksy and natural. The english dub is terrible in my opinion and it does a big disservice to the lore. Instead of coming up with something unique, they used the most generic Lord of The Rings-type fantasy stereotypes possible (like scottish dwarves, for example).

Dunno what brough on this change for me the second time around, but it was definately a time well spent. My only advice is that you need to slowly embrace its atmosphere and give it proper time and patience, because like I said, it's a really long and complex game, but a very rewarding experience in the end. Maybe reading the books might help in immersion, but that would be too much commitment to ask for if you just want to play the damn games.

Witcher 2 is much more accessible and beefed up on bigger budget, but it also can be a pain in the ass sometimes, especially when it comes to convoluted quests. Yet the reason why I love it so much is that, at one point, the storyline can branch in two vastly different directions (depending on your choices), complete with different set of quests, charaters and locations to visit. The scale at which this was done is something that you can rarely see in role playing game, so I strongly recommend replaying it at some point.

No sure what year I actually played through it. Might have even been earlier but earlier but holy shit that game is the definition of shitty start turning into the best game ever. Pretty sure it revitalized my viewpoint on RPGs and led me to play New Vegas. When The Witcher 2 came out it was catharsis. "Hey, look at this series you thought was shit, yeah it's AAA now."

I played a little bit past the swamp into the city, before finally giving up on waiting for it to get good.

Then I watched a recap of Witcher 1 and started Witcher 2.  I was enjoying Witcher 2 a lot more than Witcher 1, but it just didn't hook me for some reason I can't put my finger on.  Like, I was enjoying it fine, and then I finished a play session one day and just never had the urge to pick it back up again.  I made myself pick it back up again and continued to enjoy it fine, but after I stopped that day the same thing happened, so I quit.

My only issue at the moment is that the "locate item of interest around me" used to be a L-stick click, and would hover around items for a while. Now it's "Witcher senses" powered with a maintained LT, which also skews vision and such too. Produces same orange glow around objects and herbs n such.

Other than that of what I've played so far it's kinda nice. New in-game game to play as well. Certainly much bigger than the other games too, I think will be a bit more Witcher-ey too as well, rather than some of the previous games with political intrigue n such (no doubt that'll come into play, but at the moment most of the quests I've picked up have been to get rid of creatures n such around the area). Horse is a bit fiddly to dismount, but I like the "just hold A n it'll follow the road", which is really good since around the first village is some level 6 Drowners, so yeah I think you're not meant to stray too far at first. Though a bit silly Drowners would cause issue for a witcher such as Geralt :P
