The Witcher

I've had I think my "clicks" moment today. Around lvl 10 now, so able to do the Witcher Contract quests (I could a couple levels ago but leveled up a chunk through doing side quests). Just kinda nice to be doing that. You, a bestairy entry, witcher senses n some potions n blade oils hacking up a monster or breaking a curse. No people being jerks n no "oh, this is..errm. yeah..botchlings eh"

I would suggest going to Novigrad btw, if only cos there's a Vivaldi there n he converts your florens. I'd been kinda short on money most of the game, most items only getting you like 1 crown a pop, and even swords being like 8, 14, crap like that. There's a guy that wants 1,000 off you and I was like "hah, nooo, I've been hovering around 100 most the game". Traded in my florens and I'm now on like 2,500 (though it was like 1,400 from florens, and rest from finding a pricey though underleveld silver sword and todays Witcher quests which net you about 300 a pop if you haggle). Oh to get there just walk around for the most part, like the longways. Get some cool stuff on your map for checking on later, and don't need to advance main quest line. It's a city, so not much there to kill you.

Anywho, main reason I'm here is cos I was going through the swamp, trying to flesh out the map a bit and reach an area I soon found to be called "Bald Mountain" and a lvl 77 foglet and I was like "ah yeah I see why they didn't make this easy".

Along the way I summoned Roach, he was near me but I wanted him to trot to me. Anyway he didn't come so I went back to the spot where he'd been and suddenly childhood sadness hit me.

"Artax! Stupid horse! You've gotta move or you'll die!"

Also other fancy horse tricks I'm pretty sure he has Wile Coyote blood. Sometimes you'll gallop off an small cliff/edge and it'll take a couple seconds to register and he sorta glides down to reach surface below him.

Djikstra just asked me to help assassinate the king of Redania. But Redania is all that's holding off Nilfgaard. I don't think Djikstra would've suggested it if he believed it'd render Redania vulnerable, but I still feel like it'd just allow the Nilfgaardians a huge advantage. Seems like bad timing.

@Dean: I ended up against a level ?? mob in NE Velen. Noped so hard. I mean, can you even get to level 77 or higher?

"Hey, you know the last game where you didn't kill any kings but were accused of being an Assassin of Kings, well....."

Eh, it might have been a ?? maybe, which in the panic of an "oh shit, run away, run away" might have looked like a 77. In fact the fact that mobs levels don't pop up until you're practically right on them an engaged is kind of annoying. Figure "Witcher senses" might allow Geralt to judge a challenge from afar.

In fact there's a couple other annoying things; i,e being unable to filter/order the inventory in anyway. E.g to realise I've picked up nearly 20 weight in horse hides.

We can all agree: Triss Merigold > Yennefer ....right?!

I was a little put-off by Yen's casual remark about it being nothing serious or whatever, but I guess that's her character...

I'm starting to warm to Keira too... :P

Did you read any of the books? It's important to remember that she's like that towards Geralt because he's a giant douche himself. There's a lot of backstory which makes relationship between the two much deeper and complex. From what you'e saying they didn't made that very clear in the game. *sigh*

And holy shit, Keira's in this game? Can you pound her too?

Yeah, I've read enough to know that's what her character's like. It's a love/hate thing. Just felt odd how accepting Geralt was about the disparaging remark towards Triss.

As for Keira...

...a couple of times, she does mention wanting gratitude from Geralt that is "immediately deliverable". Along with her "greeting", the animation and voicework (combined with the series' history) is enough to suggest there's something there.

See, once I realized what Keira was up to I said "I can't believe we fucked" and then she threatened to tell Yen and Triss (whom I had recently just confessed my love to). So I was like, "oh no you didn't!" and then I killed her, it wasn't because of what she was planning on doing with those plans. Snitches get stitches!

Playing it with gamepad is always a good option, works pretty well, or at least it was in Witcher 2. The only problem was the camera during combat, which rarely fixed itself in a comfortable position and fiddling with the analog stick wasn't the option when you had to mash attack buttons. I do hope that they fixed that in Witcher 3.

Holy crap the water is better than I thought

Shame about the swimming.

Also spoilers for some Witcher 1 cross over I recently came across:

Oh yay they mentioned Kalkstien!

*2 seconds later*
Oh they burnt Kalkstien at the stake (for some reason, he was an alchemist not a witch) :(

So far, it reminds me of the first week I had with RDR. I didn't care what I was doing as long as I could experience the woods. I take my time, do one quest at a time as much as I can, talk to the NPC's and sometimes just stare at the sunset.

This game has the best atmosphere since RDR. I also love how poor I am. I can't buy shit so I spend a lot of time hunting down herbs, and the fact that I haven't out leveled 6 wolves just yet its still fairly exciting. I hope that the weaker creatures are still a challenge later in the game. I can fight them but its a challenge and especially when they get numbers on me.

I really hope bethesda pays attention, their worlds are crafted differently but they could stand to learn a lesson or two from the atmosphere, world and NPCs.

At one point I had some drowners jump out of the bog and they ignored me so I followed them and saw that they went to the nearest town to attack in which I saved the town. I got nothing in return but it was just something I decided to intervene. I know its not the Witcher way, but innocent NPC lives were at stake!

I second all of this, although i prefer TW3 hugely over RDR. I'm at about 35 hours in TW3 and just getting more swept up in it every minute, whereas by hour 15 in RDR all I could see was cracks in gameplay where 'fun' was supposed to be.

TW3 is just blowing me away turn after turn. I'm doing well in Novigrad (seriously first time you arrive there... Holy fuck) and then I decided to go back to White Orchard to tie off all the loose ends.

The amount of content in Orchard alone is... Staggering. I'm overlevelled by double but still find so much unique stuff, and have trouble with some drowners. Lower level enemies in a big groups can totally fuck you. It feels so Souls in that way. Don't worry MBM.

What I can't get over is the environments combined with the movement. Whenever you just start exploring for exploring's sake, the world is just a wonderful place to be in and move around in. Earlier tody I happened upon a town overrun by Corpse eaters... But only one was there. I looked around a bit more and couldn't find any. It was a weirdly deserted town. Then i saw a flash of red in the corner of my mjnimap. I ride out into the countryside, and the horde of corpsers and nekkers have traversed about 100 yards away, chasing a herd of deer - which led them into a pack of wolves. It was a bloodbath and a huge food-chain battle. I waited for them to finish, decapitate the last two nekkers, then swept up all the deer pelts, wolf pelts, and venom to sell later.

What a fucking game

Yeah, if Bethesda can top or incorporate a lot of the immersion elements in East and/or Fallout 4, I'll be in heaven.

I remember when Oblivion blew me away when it came out(love skyrim, but it was less mind blowing in a way) and I expect them to go all out with the next Elder Scrolls.

I also LOVE the little things that madbassman, I've had several surprise attacks in towns... Reminds me of the dragon attacks in skyrim, but it's different when you can actually see/follow the creatures instead of it happening out of nowhere with a more scripted feel on skyrim. Love both games of course.

Skyrim's legs were so long for me only because of the modding community. I have a much less desire to mod this game. This game is telling a story in a world, Elder Scrolls has always been creating a world for you to live in.

On a side note, I'm learning that I'm terrible at being a witcher...

Tower of Rats and the witches of bog spoilers below

I did the quest for the three crones of the bog and I freed the spirit and got a lecture about why that was bad.

Right after I did that I did the mouse tower mission and it turns out I freed a wraith of pestilence in the fishing village.

I knew the right answer both times but I really am trying hard to take this world as it is presented. As a fan of the books I know that not everything is as it seems.
