Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Game keeps crashing on me whenever lots of things are happening on screen... How come I can play most modern games, yet I can't run this one well?
Saturnine Tenshi
Are you running 1.5? Have you tried installing the hotfix?
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Are you running 1.5? Have you tried installing the hotfix? I don't know, I'm using the Steam Enhanced Edition. Any way, I eventually found my way around the problem. It was during some fight with 20/30 guys, and I figured out that if I let my elven compatriots do some of the dirty work for me, the game doesn't freak out and crash to desktop. Hot Heart
Hmm, I was having what sounds like the exact same problem (although it doesn't sound like it's the same bit). Nothing to do with computer specs, really. Just a bug in the game. Think I might have to sit back during that fight too.
Pirandello
I heard GoG is bringing Witcher 1 to the site and that they'll be having a $5 sale on it from the 10th to the 24th. A problem, since: 1. The Witcher 2 releases in a relatively close timespan to it. 2. It starts on the same day Brink launches. I think I've spent more on games in the past 3 months alone than I have in my entire life. The parents are not going to like this, and I'm gonna have a hell of a time explaining it to them.
deanb
If you put the time into it I'm sure you could beat it in 5 days. Most people really into Witcher 2 will have already got the first one anyway, so not much of an issue.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
I can use the excuse that it's a joint get for my brother and I. He's getting an Alienware m11x pretty soon (a laptop I had a chance to get for myself, but foolishly got an XPS Studio instead), and since the GOG version is DRM free, I'll be able to let him play it as well. I don't see any moral issues with this, since it will only be between my brother and myself.
Faiblesse Des Sens
So what's the deal with this A Curse and A Love and... fanmade add-on thing? How do you launch into it, how is it, etc?
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
So what's the deal with this A Curse and A Love and... fanmade add-on thing? How do you launch into it, how is it, etc? Is that the thing that comes with the Enhanced Edition? You just hit New Game, and it gives you the option to play the new stuff.
Faiblesse Des Sens
No, it's fan-made. I said that in my post.
Saturnine Tenshi
After installing an adventure: "You just hit New Game, and it gives you the option to play the new stuff." That's what the side-adventures are when you hit "New Game".
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
I am so glad I am finally playing through it now. I got to Act II two years ago and gave up, but I'm enjoying it a lot more now.
RockyRan
Been trying to play the Witcher 1 again and I'm back to being bored (had to start over because I lost my save). So I finished the godawful first act and I just started Act II. I've heard horrible things about a so-called swamp, yet don't hear that much about Act I, which I hated (liked the story, hated everything else). Leads me to believe the swamp is "worse" than the first Act, in which case I can only foresee this ending in a keyboard-through-monitor scenario. I do have to say, though, so many people (including me) feel compelled to keep playing a game I obviously am not enjoying, with the promise of a proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in the form of a game that's actually good. I'm not trying to knock on the game, though, it does look like it has plenty of potential and I'm not going to deny all the calls that the game is awesome. Still, the general consensus is that the first few hours range from "tolerable" to "oh god, someone kill me". I'm seeing a pretty high amount of people saying the same kind of things: they're "trying" to play through the game, usually talk about how they're "forcing themselves" to play through the first couple of acts, and oddly enough many of them talk about something along the lines of the game draining their will to keep going. I'm like, damn this is some SERIOUS barrier of entry here. I feel that if this were your generic regular-Joe game that'd be a damnable enough "gaming sin" to condemn it for all eternity and be universally disliked, but for some reason that's not the case with the Witcher. Again, it's probably the promise that the game gets better and the fact that at the end of the day people think the game is awesome. Witcher 2 being on the horizon probably helps that as well. I dunno, it's strange. Lots of people, including myself, are very VERY forgiving of a game with several hours of mind-crushing boringness because we keep hearing it gets better. I'll keep going largely because I hate spending money on games that I never finish (and that alone will probably drive me to play through the infamous parts), but I've never really seen or been part of a phenomenon like this. deanb
How to make the swamp better: Just run through it. Once you've gone through it the first time and got a lay of the land it's easy enough to go n do what you need to. About only time you can't run is if you take Gramps to the shrine, in which case you need to have him tag along and he doesn't run. You get to work more with Kalkstien on this one too, and I'm a fan of him. Also you start to see more of your older choices play out too, always nice. I eventually realized that they were going to throw something like 40-50 enemies at me every time I strolled through, so if I simply ran, I could easily get to the other side with little resistance. Saturnine Tenshi
Huh. I wonder what's up with Act I and the swamp. Neither really troubled me. Aside from that cursed pit hound. Had to resort to knocking her down for insta-kill.

Had to resort to knocking her down for insta-kill. The swamp doesn't show up until Acts II and III. I think you're thinking of the riverbed right next to the merchant's goods they make you protect. The one filled with drowners (though to be fair, the swamp has its fair share of drowners)?
Kovach_
The swamp consists of killing zounds of drowners, and sometimes to do a quest or two XD By far the worst part of the game.
Saturnine Tenshi
I meant Act I and the swamp as two separate entities. Generally, I just ran through the swamp in the swift-sworded stance. I actually found it endearing because of the many places to explore. The next Act was better, I think. Those verdant(but not really) fields were nice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8mvMS-kqhw See: fun times. Though if someone doesn't enjoy the game, they probably shouldn't be playing it. Kovach_
There was this one wyvern that was always flying so high up you could say he's hidden. He'd always drop on me when i'm at like ~25% HP. I drank a beer when i killed him.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Also, it annoyed me that the first cockatrice you kill in the sewers is easy to take down, but the rest of them are so much harder to off.

Saturnine Tenshi
I did. The dude was friggin' useless. He just walked up to it and died every time. Were you playing on the hardest difficulty setting? Speaking of him: ...wait. Is there no spoiler tag? I GUESS I'LL SPOIL EVERYTHING! HO HO HO! Which group did you inevitably side with? I went with the elves, because well, elves are sultry beasts, aren't they? I think that's one of the things that people fail to comprehend until they're deep into the plot: just how resounding and unpredictable the effects of your decisions are. Maybe that's one of the draws of the game? None of the fake moral grays from similar western role-playing titles. Hasn't been broski'd like Bioware titles, either. I feel for their writers. Really. Hasn't been broski'd like Bioware titles, either. I feel for their writers. Really. That was one of the big reasons that I enjoyed The Witcher so much, they're using it as a one of the main selling points of The Witcher 2. I suppose Bioware's moral system serves a purpose. It allows younger gamers to play around with moral dilemmas.....without the dillemas. As for Sigfried, he was useless and whether it was due to bad AI or not, it worked for his character. There are spoiler tags, you just have to type them out
