Saturnine Tenshi
The arm wrestling really bothers me. D:< Also, the amount of side-quests is ridiculous. Edited May 18, 2011 by Saturnine Tenshi
Mr. GOH!
I use a controller. Much better than the keyboard for this type of game. That being an action RPG. The combat works extremely well, but you will die if you wade an and mash buttons with reckless abandon. Every encounter must be thought through, as must your use of weapons, magic, items and potions (which are only usable outside of combat). It's not tactical in the Baldur's Gate sense, but rather in a sense similar to, I think, Demon's Souls. Timing is everything. Overall, it's a beautiful game and *much* more fun than I was expecting. I do feel lost insofar as I don't have any idea about the backstory (having never completed the first) and other seemingly important setting details (Why is Nilfgaard evil? What does a map of the continent look like? Who are all these people Geralt knows?). But the journal entries are good enough so that I can keep track of the important stuff. Oh, actually, my biggest gripe is the writing style of the quest journal. It's insanely cutesy and trite, often asking rhetorical questions and referring to Geralt as "Our Hero" and other cheesy fantasy writing tropes. It's just a mood breaker and a strange aesthetic choice, is all. I guess it adds character to the game more than anything else. But, yeah, damn, this game is fucking awesome and you all should get it if you can. Best $45 gaming buck I've ever spent. And free DLC! Saturnine Tenshi
I'm having so much trouble with the Scoi'tel at the waterfall in the Malena quest. And I'm having no trouble with the keyboard, myself.
Mr. GOH!
I'm having so much trouble with the Scoi'tel at the waterfall in the Malena quest. And I'm having no trouble with the keyboard, myself. Huh. The toughest fight for me was the horde of nekkers in the cave in that same quest. Took me two dozen tries to get through them (during which I learned how the combat system actually works). The elves were tough until I remembered to pull out my steel sword. IIRC, the quen rune helps if there are a shitload of archers as well. Then again, I'm playing on normal. I feel like the insane difficulty level is actually insane. Folks expecting the easy Bioware levels of insane are in for a rude, rude, rude awakening. Saturnine Tenshi
I always use Quen. FFS the others do so little right now. I'm trying to find her after I finished off the Scoi'tel now. Can't seem to locate the ho. Edit: I don't understand why the Scoi'tel aren't more friendly with me. I banged their women and helped them loads in the first game. Oh, one problem I do have: button for attacking = button for looting. Stupid shit. Edited May 18, 2011 by Saturnine Tenshi

She stayed by the entrance with the soldiers guarding her in my game. Yeah, the "X button does everything" is annoying. I'd like some of the functions mapped to the A button, since it's also the confirm button in menus and not used in combat.
Saturnine Tenshi
Oh, I'm farther in the quest than you are, that's all. When(if) you get past the waterfall, let me know.
Mister Jack
I've been thinking about playing the first Witcher. Should I wait until I get a gamepad for that too or is it more WASD friendly than the sequel?
Kovach_
First one is full on WASD.
P4: Gritty Reboot
I believe the first one can even just be largely point-and-click depending on the camera angle you pick.
Mister Jack
Guess I'll look for the first game on a Steam sale, then.
deanb
Yeah when you start a new game it asks what difficulty you want and if you want to be just mouse, or kb/m. I went with kb/m so can't tell you how the mouse only style plays. I largely dislike diablo style movement so I doubt I'd have liked it in The Witcher. edit: @MisterJack: It's $5 on GoG. DRM free, bunch of free stuff tossed in: http://www.gog.com/e...rd/the_witcher/ If it goes on sale on Steam it'll probably only be $5. P4: Gritty Reboot
Guess I'll look for the first game on a Steam sale, then. It's still only 5 USD on gog.com http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/the_witcher Edited May 18, 2011 by P4: Man of the Cloth
Mister Jack
Is that a temporary sale? I still need to beat LA Noire before I get into any big RPGs but if the price is going to go up soon I guess I should snag it for later.
deanb
It says "Promo" on the front page, so I guess it's a sale. Judging by most GoG prices it'll go up to $10 when off sale.
excel_excel
So I'm playing Witcher 1 again and during chapter 1 while doing all the side quests and main quests, its CLICKED. I'm enjoying myself! Maybe I just have to get in that Witcher grove, where I accept the shit. Or something. Seriously though. It fucking sucks till then though. Should a game be judged on a shit opening part?....yes. Yes it should. We judge games on excellent openings too! I wouldn't say it outright sucks at the beginning! It's really slow to take off though. Good to see you're starting to enjoy it though. I told ya ya would if ya kept at it. Your were right....for once yeah I was a little harsh but I just feel the start feels like more of a big tutorial and not a very good one. Still once you get into it, its great! The Witcher 2 is looking absolutely fantastic. So much more immersive looking and polished then the first
Saturnine Tenshi
I'm still in Flotsam after, like, six hours. So much to do here. And I haven't stopped playing.

The sale lasts until the 24th. Anyways, is anyone else receiving any lag? I turned down the resolution (the detail was already at low) and I'm getting quite the lag. People said it's specific to Nvidia cards (I have a GTX460), and they recommended uninstalling the Nvidia 3D Vision drivers, but I don't have any installed. Other than that, the game runs great. And you can use a controller with it, you say? Edited May 18, 2011 by Pirandello
Saturnine Tenshi
I have a GTX460 and no lag on high-max settings. Well, I do get a bit when loading the option menu to save my game.
excel_excel
Oh yeah, did you guys play with the object names setting on in Witcher 1? I have it on but it seems to break immersion a little. Although I could just turn it off and use Alt I fear I'd miss something
Pirandello
I think it has a on-off button-press toggle with Alt. Only turns on when you need it to. Helpful for scoping out things. On another note, how the hell do you destroy nekker nests around Flotsam?
Saturnine Tenshi
I played with them off and just held the button down whenever needed. And you use bombs, Pirandello.
Pirandello
And you use bombs, Pirandello. I'm assuming a bomb that uses fire and/or shrapnel, right? I tried throwing bombs at it and it didn't work until I realized I was using ice bombs.

Don't toss them, you gotta use the item interaction with the nest to set the charge.
Saturnine Tenshi
The quest said grapefruit bombs, but whatever works. Has anyone found the royal mailbox yet? The final side-quest I have there before fighting the k-thing. Edited May 19, 2011 by Saturnine Tenshi
