Do you have to repeat that cycle of "run away/fight/run away" with every member of the family? Or do the others go by faster?

Jack is the only pursuer. The other members of the family have their own gimmick but they don't chase you around like him.

When it picks up, it picks up.

Spoiler

Went from running for my life, equipped only with a knife and a handgun with almost no ammo to...  A flamethrower, a grenade launcher, a bunch of enhanced ammo, and what I assume is this game's version of the super shotgun. :P

At this rate, I don't think I'll get the magnum from the coin thingy, current setup seems to be working just fine. :P

Yeah, at that point people were either super thrilled or felt it ruined the vibe of the game.

I was fine with getting a decked out arsenal, but at that point it wasn't such a scary game when you're so prepared. Granted, the Bakers can still be a handful.

Yeah, there's also the lack of enemy variety. You can only be scared by black goop monsters so many times. I think the scare factor of the game peaks once you go down to the basement of the main house. After you leave, it's your typical actiony modern RE. That's why I'm so excited that RE Village is clearly drawing from RE4. RE4 stuck a pretty good balance with giving you over the top firepower but still keeping you on your toes and having some tense moments even in the late game. I really hope Village does the same.

Yeah, that's also why horror sequels are almost never as scary as the original. The scariest thing is the unknown, so once you're too familiar with something it just can't be as scary to you. Or at least not in the "existential dread" kind of way.

Started playing RE HD, man, I DON'T REMEMBER ANYTHING about this game, so far I've spent an hour wandering around after getting the sword key, the fact that some things have changed or moved around compared to the original on PS1 doesn't help, that it's been several years since I've played it ain't making things easier either.

It's fun to be back in this type of RE game though, that's cool. :P

Well I have officially finished my Village of Shadows difficulty playthrough with 3 hours on the clock and did my speedrun with the clock at 2 hours. Mind you, the game does not count deaths and the timer will reset to whatever it was at your last save, so take that as you will. I died a few times on Village of Shadows but didn't die at all on the speedrun.

Going back and forth between Village and RE7 cause I wanna make my first playthrough last and I don't like playing horror games during the day. And holy shit, Ethan Must Die mode fucking sucks. It's just manageable enough that you wanna keep trying but it's so fucking unfair at times. If you don't get certain drops you might as well just restart because certain sections just won't be possible. It genuinely feels like it's deliberately wasting your time and I fucking hate it.

Update: Ethan has, in fact, survived. It still sucked, but I did it. And it was on a run I thought was doomed, too. Didn't have anywhere near enough ammo to fight Marguerite so I ran out of my hidey-hole to try and find supplies (which of course I didn't) but I got lucky and she got fucked by turrets while I was running around so my last 4 meager pistol shots were miraculously enough to finish her off.

Finished the game for a third time, preparing weapons and recipes for Hardcore/Village of Shadows, and I'm kinda disappointed in some of the weapons, mostly the STAKE and Wolfsbane, I would have hoped the Wolfsbane to be the best weapon, given it's name and that it's the coolest looking of them all, but the STAKE outclasses it completely once fully upgraded. :(

I also miss infinite the infinite ammo approach of RE4, where you could just hold the trigger and go to town, none of this having to reload every once in a while thing. :P

Is it just me or does Village of Shadows gradually turn into complete bullshit? At first it's fine and the way it messes with enemy placement or throws in a late-game enemy where you're not expecting one is kinda great. It keeps you on your toes.

But then you get near the end of the game and suddenly normal enemies can take a blast from a fully upgraded automatic shotgun and not even stagger. I was trying to avoid using my infinite ammo wolfsbane as much as possible but once I realized how unfair things had become I just said fuck it and started using nothing else. And then there's two boss fights in a row where you start in a super tight spot and can't easily get out of it. I actually rage quit on the second one, it just seemed random and unfair. I'll try again tomorrow, I guess.

And after that one comes

Spoiler

the Chris section

and I don't even want to imagine what kind of nightmare it's going to be. It was already frustrating on hardcore...

Here's a tip for the Chris section. There's a house on the left side with a ladder. If you climb halfway up the lycans can't reach you, which will give you a much needed breather in between reloads. It's a lot more manageable that way. For me, the hardest part of Village of Shadows was by far the Heisenberg fight, although it was easier the second time I did it.

@Mister JackThanks for the tip! It definitely made that section more manageable. And I got that fight I was stuck on pretty easily when I tried again today. I think I had just been playing for too long and was getting frustrated too easily.

Wrapped up Village of Shadows today and immediately after did a full speedrun+no heal+no merchant run. I considered adding knife only to this but I figured I might wanna use healing items for that. Think I need a break from the game now. I really don't feel like jumping into mercenaries right now, at least.

Yay!! \m/ \m/

Spoiler

Heisenberg tank and Chris' laser targetting thingy just have a way of making seconds feel like an eternity.

"Reload already you stupid thing!" was shouted many times during the Heisenberg fight. lol

Fully upgraded STAKE with infinite ammo FTW. :P

Gun you get from this though... Feels kinda lame IMO, specially given what you have to do to get it.

Also managed to get the Lucky Number 7 achievement, though I did look up a guide for it. :P

Two achievements left in the campaign, and then the only one left will be the mercenaries one, which is going to be a pain. :P
