Mr. GOH!
Here's a thread about Dwarf Fortress, the game that's like NetHack combined with The Sims and more madness than you could shake a stick at. You manage a Dwarven Fortress populated by drunken, moody and moronic dwarves. You must mine out their living spaces, trade or war with neighboring peoples, build insanely complicated megaconstructions and dig ever deeper for wealth and glory. It's a little bit like Minecraft, being in perpetual beta and capable of simulating amazing things, except that it's for real gamers and not babies who need a 3D interface. It's all ASCII, just as God intended for PC games. As in life, there is no way to win Dwarf Fortress, but countless ways to lose. Here's a link to a more gentle version with graphics and a bunch of utilities already installed: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=59026.

deanb
It's a game that I've always wanted to play. But yeah it looks very scary and overly complex learning curve, but with a potentially satisfying reward at the end. I may give it a shot with the 'Lazy Newb' pack. One day. Still got other games in the way at the moment. I know on the last place there was a fair few games where they'd make a map, play through a year, do a write up then pass the game along. Someone might start another one of those up. These are always good too: http://www.timdenee.com/oilfurnace/

Too much responsibility, and I am terrible with end game mechanics. I would be willing to go like second or third.

I'm not terribly good at the game, but I can set up a reasonably well-run and self-sufficient fortress within a year. We'd need a good number (4 or 5 at least) of people wanting to play before we start up, though.
Bouchart
I'd be interested in a succession game, by the way. I'd rather not start it, though- the first year always bores me to death because I've restarted too many times.
Mal
Same as Dean. I always wanted to get into it but man the learning curve is high. I would say the highest one of any game I ever tried.
deanb
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ It's kinda like Minecraft, but much much harder. First of all if you've never played it you should read these first to wet the appetite: http://www.timdenee.com/oilfurnace/ http://www.eldritch....ronzemurder.pdf They're what inspired me to give a crack at it. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/09/23/dwarf-fortress-the-song-of-onionbog-pt-1/ - this too. Anyway this is what Dwarf Fortress normally looks like: Thankfully there's people out there who realise not everyone can read ASCII natively so: They make it look nice. Better than nice. Which you can get in this handy program here: http://www.bay12foru...p?topic=59026.0 That includes the graphical overlay, the 3D output up above called "Stonesense" and a editor that lets you turn certain things off to let you ease yourself into the game. Here's one tutorial: http://afteractionre...ess-part-1-wtf/ here's another: http://df.magmawiki....uickstart_guide Now I'm just starting out, and it's got a bit of a learning curve but it's not as horrible once a dwarf looks like a fucking dwarf, so I recommend it. And remember Losing is Fun!
TheMightyEthan
OMG! Those graphics patches look like they might make it actually comprehensible!
deanb
It doesn't fix up the sometimes horrible control scheme though. Some bits use the mouse, but most of it is pure keyboard baby. That Stonesense, the isometric one, isn't interactive though. It latches onto Dwarf Fortress when you run it and outputs it in 3D and that's it. It's purely there to look pretty. The little 2D stuff does change the actual game though. That newb pack some's with a variety of pixel art to pick from. There's still a few bits that either haven't been replaced or still take a bit to wrap your head around though. Like I saw a stampede of B's on my earlier game Badgers if I remember correctly. My current learning curve is spending about 1-2hrs on it this evening, I know basic fortress layout, the menu system etc. Next is to learn self sufficiency and making it an actual fortress. TheMightyEthan
I bet even the iso one would help you learn to interpret the ASCII though.

MasterDex
I'M SCARED. Seriously, as I said in the status update... this game made me its bitch so many times. You're not the only one. To be completely honest, Dwarf Fortress can feck off for all I care, I can see the great potential of the game but it's so stubbornly difficult to pick up that it's insulting and then there's the bunch of elitists in the community that will spit on anyone for criticising that aspect of it. Give me a more intuitive interface and some half-way decent graphics as default and I might be tempted to play but as it stands, I don't have any great intent to returning to climb that gargantuan slope to play a game that's more trouble than it's worth. Well, it is an alpha. GUI and interface is the last part of development because features keep being added and changed. Since it's a one-man project and insanely complex, the dev wants to finish the core game first. The community is generally pretty kind; I apologize if anyone insulted you for your frustration with what everyone admits is a frustrating and fiddly and sometimes downright terrible interface. That said, what's it like going through life with a brain that can't even handle a simple text game?

Mr. GOH!
I have immigrants!! which probably means I'm fucked. Just the opposite, dean; it means you have recruits for your armed forces! Also, mebbe you might wanna merge this thread with the other DF thread started a long time ago by a certain handsome and mysterious gentleman? http://tay.gappoi.or...dwarf-fortress/ Edit: Merge accomplished! Much thanks! Edited May 4, 2011 by Mr. GOH!

deanb
Anyone want any Dwarfs named after them? I've got 2 Farmers (one already has a name since I had two dwarfs called Amost), a jeweller/leather worker, two miners, a carpenter and a mason. The mason is taken too. This is to live in the fortress of Pagedanced. I won't be doing any stories or such, but I might do any updates if you do anything eventful. Like die, go mad, kill something decent, or be "taken by a strange mood"

And yes, I recall people saying that scenario is possible. They dig, dig, dig and whoops. Hellspawns released. Now time for my next attempt.
