Mr. GOH!
Oooh! Dorf me! Brewer?
deanb
Well stopped for now cos the first caravan has arrived. I've saved the game then backed it up, so that should it all go to shit with the trade system again I can have another crack at it. As for a brewer, don't have anyone in that official capacity yet (still wrapping my head around Dwarf Therapist) but when I do. Also I have some carp nearby, but can't seem to figure out how to make dwarves go fish. Which means at the moment I have zippo in terms of meat n fish. deanb
So I've got Dwarf Therapist mostly figured out. I hear you can make pre-made job roles, so I'm going to have a shot at that in the future. My trading went fine, though I think I fucked up the liaison part. Since last posting I even traded with elves. Mr Goh has a brewer named after him, and since last posting Malicious has become a legendary miner. (along with Neostarr ) I had a little "immigrants have arrived" pop up, and checked by status to see how much. I'd gone up by one. While later I noticed a bunch of dwarfs milling around in the dining hall, which is where I found out that it had only gone up by one because that's all that had walked onto the screen at the time. I had gained 22 new dwarfs, more than doubling how many I have. So having to rapidly churn out beds and bedrooms as well as find things for these guys to do. My current problem is that I have no iron. All I'm getting is ...can't remember what but it makes Zinc. Also I wish I could just set my jeweller to auto-cut gems. I have to set them manually since each individual gem type is considered a single job.
Mr. GOH!
There is a way to kinda auto-cut gems and such. IIRC, you can set jobs to repeat. If you do so, your gemcutter will cut all available types of a certain gem. Of course, if you run out, the job will cancel, so you need to still keep an eye on your gemcutter. This works for most manufacturing jobs,
P4: Gritty Reboot
I just fired this up. It's so much fun so far; really reminds me of just sitting in front of old PC games and poring over 200 page manuals trying to figure out what key does what. Mr. GOH!
I've decided to do a brief tutorial-style Let's Play of the newest DF version with screenshots. I know there's some interest in the game and that it's intimidating to get the hang of. I've been playing for a couple years, so I'll present an outline the basics of how to start a fort for the first year of gameplay or so. Warning: there will be spoilers of certain... fun features in later entries. I'll get started on it later tonight. If you wanna be dorfed, just reply in this thread.

deanb
Aye go on. A masonry dwarf is possible. My main advice for starting out is don't be afraid to hit k n check on any items you're unsure of and use the Wiki extensively to check stuff out*. There's no story elements so nothing to spoil in checking the wiki, it's pretty much required. Also be prepared to build a fort following the instructions, fuck something up, then start afresh. *http://twitter.com/#!/deanbmmv/status/68486874955661312
TheMightyEthan
I would like some kind of explanation too. Don't know what "dorf" means though.
deanb
This is adorf. Also update on Pagedanced. I've got a basic hospital built. Military is still zippo. I've not found iron still, but I did find silver. So yeah my guys are gonna have some very fancy equipment. I've expanded my farm a fair bit, had it slow down for a while due to lack of potash, but managed to make an ashery. I've got so many gems I've built their own stockpile room. It rivals the size of my ore room (though I will need to expand my ore room soon) Speaking of ore, I have got Zinc. Zinc coming out my ears. I can't make weapons of it, but I can make pretty much anything else. Also my dwarves fucking looove my dining room. Always hosting parties there. I can't find the masterpieces though. Butchering and fishing I need to figure out. I feel my animals are kinda doing nothing, I want to figure out how to milk them, breed them etc. Oh yeah Linklonk was possessed, made a grate. It menaces with spikes of buaxite and chert. It has an image of a feather tree in schist. My clothier is in a fey mood moment, he went to his bedroom though which I feel is a bad sign. Also I made it to year 2 Also for anyone who went "whut?" during reading any of that: 5 days ago I had never played Dwarf Fortress. It's not as hard to pick up once you kinda realise how it plays. The main issue is just having to go back n forth with the wiki to find out new things you can do. Also wrestling with Dwarf Therapist. edit: oh yeah an update on people: metalcaveman is married to Notch and has a daughter. Neostarr n Malicious are legendary miners. Malicious has a grudge with Mason. MrGoh has a lover, one of the farmers. edit2: Metalcaveman n Notch also have a Son. edit3: as suspected I have an insane clothier. Mal
Grudge against Mason? I think because he can't tell me what the numbers mean and where the hell they are coming from. One of us are going to die. --- E1- I'm sort of getting the hang of it... I guess? E2- HOLY SHIT. I CAN DIG TUNNEL? Mercurial
So ya I got bored and made a new fortress and just dug straight down. deanb
http://www.pressxordie.com/2011/08/01/how-to-get-into-dwarf-fortress/ I may have written a little something on this topic.
MasterDex
With my PC still down, I've had more incentive to try Dwarf Fortress again. This time, with the cumulated knowledge of the multiple failures I had previously along with a more carefree attitude to the interface, I'm doing pretty well. But I think I've hit a bit of a wall. I've got nearly 70 dwarves, half of which I'm sure don't have their own rooms and I've got an assortment of different workshops. I've got a militia squad and my engraver is working on smoothing out my dining room whenever he isn't drinking or sleeping. I haven't a clue what way to go for organising my dwarves' professions though and I can't get my metal industry started because I'm having no luck finding hematite or some other iron ore, which also means my militia squad is running around with their bare fists...apart from the one guy that has an axe. So, where do I go from here? How best should I sort out my labour and how the hell do I find some Iron ore!
deanb
I suggest you dig deeper, or outwards from main shaft then if you're struggling for ore. Also it doesn't matter if your dwarves don't have their own beds/bedrooms as long as there's enough that a sizeable percentage can sleep at any given time. Though making beds is fairly simple if you have a surplus of rock so I don't see the reason not too. I usually have an entire floor dedicated to sleeping, with a few grander rooms for the upper class/mayors n shit to sleep in.
deanb
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/ New update out. If any of you are interested (I guess it'll be a while until Lazy Newb Pack gets update for it though)

deanb
Anyone up for a succession game? Or maybe getting a few newbs in and writing up our experiences n such while longer term players pass on nuggets of wisdom n what not (bear in mind I'm making no claim to be a longer term player, I've not played for so long I'm gonna have to be starting from scratch anyway )
DaveStrife
A succession game sounds good to me though I am still a newb. I've only been playing DF for about a month now.
