toxicitizen
You guys planning on playing some horror games this month? Each year, I tell myself it would be fun to play some around Halloween but I never end up actually doing it. I was already trying to convince myself to finally play Amnesia soon, so I figured I might as well just run with it and do a full month of focusing on my horror backlog. Had a look through my Steam library and here's what I've got so far: Some of these have been on my backlog for a while, so it would be good to finally scratch them off. Anyone else planning something similar? If so, share your plans/progress in here!
TheMightyEthan
Maybe this will be my excuse to finally play Alien Isolation...
Saturnine Tenshi
I'm too much of a pansy for spooky games, but maybe it's a good idea for a Halloween stream or something. Although it seems the closest I have is Dead Space. Does that count?
toxicitizen
Maybe this will be my excuse to finally play Alien Isolation... Alien Isolation is a legit great game regardless of spookines. You should play it anyway. I'm too much of a pansy for spooky games, but maybe it's a good idea for a Halloween stream or something. Although it seems the closest I have is Dead Space. Does that count? Sure, why not? It's basically Resident Evil in space. Necromorphs are totally spooky. MetalCaveman
I try to play through the Dead Space games this time of the year, though I might try and actually finish Alan Wake this time around. Also, there's the FEAR games, and Shadow of Chernobyl if that counts. I also own a copy of Condemned 2, but last time I tried to play it I jumped off my chair, and that was not fun.
toxicitizen
First Alien Isolation and now Alan Wake?! Man, you guys have much better games to play through than I do. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I have Dead Space 3 on Origin but I wasn't a fan of the direction they took it into, so there's a reason why I still haven't played it. But if I somehow manage to beat my entire list and need something else, I think I'd be more likely to do that Resident Evil 4 professional difficulty run I've been putting off for a while. Oh and I guess I still need to play through the RE5 DLC episodes. And I'm just now remembering that the Penumbra games exist. Yeah, Dead Space 3 ain't happening. As for whether specific games count or not, let's just say anything that qualifies as even remotely horror-ish/creepy counts? I mean, I've got Grim Dawn on my list. I forgot to cancel my Humble Monthly sub in time, so I need an excuse to play it lol. Edited October 4, 2016 by FLDemon
deanb
I'm playing Fallout 4 for the DLC and that has ghouls in it. Going through my library, even with a liberal brush of "what's spooky" by including things like "it has zombies/vampires/ghosts in it" there's only really these cos like Tenshi I'm a wuss when it comes to horror. Only reason I have the Amnesia stuff is cos of a HIB I might stick on Ghostbusters at some point since that's slightly in theme and hey should be a relatively short game to knock out.

Baconrath
I'm not very spooky :[ Impossible Creatures is on there only because you can give a giraffe like an insect head and I'm pretty sure that's some sort of eldritch horror.
TheMightyEthan
I've been playing Destiny, and that picture on my gamer card in my sig makes it look pretty creepy...

Ghostbusters' a good one, actually. It might not be horror/spooky but it's definitely Halloween-y. I played a little bit of it when it first came out and it was pretty good, think I'll add it to my list. Would probably be a good idea to play some lighter stuff between games like Amnesia and Outlast. I'm not very spooky :[ Impossible Creatures is on there only because you can give a giraffe like an insect head and I'm pretty sure that's some sort of eldritch horror. Metro 2033 is great and has some pretty spooky parts! I don't actually have Alien: Isolation, I would have to buy it. Oh. Well, it's bound to go on sale around Halloween. Speaking of which, there's currently a robot-themed Midweek Madness sale on Steam. SOMA is on sale, if anyone's interested. I recently played it and it's pretty damn good. The Five Nights at Freddy's games are also on sale, if you're into those. Edited October 4, 2016 by FLDemon

MetalCaveman
Started Dead Space and Dead Space 2, both are still pretty creepy even after playing through them a couple of times, also played through DS Ignition, mostly to re-unlock the conduit rooms in DS2 as that one is not about scary horror stuff but rather about solving puzzles. TheMightyEthan
Ooh, I have Dead Space 2, I could play that one... (I also have Dead Space 1 but I've already played it 1.5x). I tried DS2 once but I couldn't get into it since the horror aspect was played out from DS1, but after somebody told me to think of DS2 more like Aliens to DS1's Alien I'm thinking it might be time to give it another go. TheMightyEthan
Alright, there's all my Halloween-y games (and as you can see I was pretty generous with that category). The only ones that I haven't really played are Dead Space 2, KHOLAT, Nation Red, and The Novelist. If I'm gonna play a Halloween type game at this point I'm really leaning either DS2 or buying Alien: Isolation. Probably DS2 unless Alien goes on sale for <$10 between now and Halloween. *Edit - Updated the list cause I'm dumb. toxicitizen
Dead Space 2 is arguably better than Dead Space 1. It's a bit more action-y but it's not like the original wasn't, so I didn't really have a problem with it. At least it's not like Dead Space 3 where you're getting into cover-shooting gunfights against human beings. :/ But yeah, I thought DS2 was just a better game overall. As for me, I decided to start on a low-stress note with Resident Evil 0. I put a few hours into it back in January but wasn't able to finish it before the onslaught of winter releases, so it got shelved indefinitely. Started over and I'm already almost back to where I was. It's not as good as REmake but it's old-school RE so it's still pretty good. Also, playing it reminded me that January isn't too far off and the last couple years we had HD remasters of REmake and 0. So, I started wondering if Capcom might announce something soon, like maybe Code Veronica HD or something? It wasn't until the next day that I remembered that Resident Evil 7 is a thing and is, in fact, coming in January. I think you might have a marketing problem, Capcom! Show your fucking game already if you want me to get hyped for it! Probably DS2 unless Alien goes on sale for <$10 between now and Halloween. https://uk.gamesplanet.com/game/alien-isolation-steam-key--1096-1?ref=itad Edited October 8, 2016 by FLDemon

It may well be the better game, but horror/terror doesn't work as well once you're familiar with the thing. That was why I lost interest, it just wasn't scary anymore. But I think that's why the Aliens comparison might help me enjoy it, because then I won't go in expecting the same kind of horror so I won't be disappointed at its lack. Probably DS2 unless Alien goes on sale for <$10 between now and Halloween. https://uk.gamesplanet.com/game/alien-isolation-steam-key--1096-1?ref=itad lol, yeah, I saw that. £8.49 = $10.56 though, which is >$10. MetalCaveman
Aside from the asteroid shooting bit (which I hate because I suck at it ) I prefer DS over DS2. I just like the creepy ship where everyone's dead thing more than creepy space city where everyone's dead. DS3 was a thing though. The Awakened DLC was way better but still not enough to redeem itself.
toxicitizen
First game down! Just beat Resident Evil 0. It took longer than I would've liked due to both Slime Rancher and Shenzhen I/O stealing all my attention for pretty much an entire week but I think I got them both out of my system now. Not sure which one to do next, though. I picked RE0 pretty much at random out of my list, so I might do that again. I just can't bring myself to start Amnesia. I did try Shadow Warrior a bit earlier today (it was still daytime, so I didn't want to play RE0 yet). It's not spooky but it's got demons in it, so whatever, close enough. Not sure yet if I'll stick with it or not, though. Don't want to get side-tracked again... Edited October 15, 2016 by FLDemon
Mister Jack
I got the Resident Evil Remaster on PS+ to play through this month and Jesus Christ, I'm remembering why I always had trouble getting into the original game. All this inventory management and running to the item box and getting lost and turned around is super tedious. I'm trying not to consult a step by step walkthrough because there's not much fun to be had in that, but having no idea where to go is pretty frustrating.

I'm trying not to consult a step by step walkthrough because there's not much fun to be had in that, but having no idea where to go is pretty frustrating. I don't remember it being that bad in REmake. It definitely takes some getting used to but the map is pretty well designed, so it doesn't take too long to learn to navigate it efficiently. Shit, just talking about it I can still remember its layout and it's been almost two years since I last played it. Now that's good map design. If you can look past it, REmake is a genuinely great game, I think. Arguably the best of the entire RE series. So yeah, I'd recommend trying to stick with it. But lol, if it really bothers you that much then stay far away from RE0. They did away with the item boxes and replaced them with a "just drop everything on the fucking floor!" mechanic. So, you need that item you dropped earlier? Check on your map which room you left it in and you have to make your way back wherever the fuck that specific room was. It doesn't take long to start missing item boxes. About halfway through the game I started doing "item runs" where I'd drop most of my non-essential shit in a typewriter room and whenever I reached a new one that looked like I'd never go back to the previous one, I transferred all my shit to it. Now that was tedious. Worst part is at the very last typewriter room of the game I still ended up going "well, shit. looks like it's final boss time. better go back to get that grenade launcher..." MetalCaveman
Never been a big fan of inventory management in the RE games, though arranging stuff in RE4 was kinda relaxing so I don't mind that one too much.
deanb
GMG are doing a deal of a 4-pack of horror games for 49p. You're probably not gonna get like REVI or whatever (I don't know horror games so dunno what's new n hip n £40) but I imagine you'll get something spooky-ish n hey it's 49p. https://www.greenmangaming.com/games/halloween-4-game-pack/ edit: oh n if you did the Golden Joystick thing you have £/$/€1 credit so it's essentially free.
