Falcom thread (Trails, Ys, Xanadu, etc.)

True but I'm not familiar with this publisher. They could end up being region-locked. And even if not, the ports might be complete garbage or have ridiculous online DRM (like the old Chinese ports) that makes it all a pain in the ass. Not exactly an ideal scenario.

The fan translations group (Geofront) for the Crossbell games is basically ignoring those releases (expected Summer of 2021, at which point all work on Crossbell would be done) since there's no guarantee that any of their work can move over to the Steam release without significant time investment that I don't think anyone of the team wants to make. Years have been spent on these two games already. They want to move on to other games or just retire and get on with life (e.g., one of the folks [Zerker] is currently in law school). Honestly they should spend their time on the wiki (a lot of the people behind both are the same [e.g., Ribose]). They have plans to be able to display information based on the games you have played (like how Tower of the Hand does it with the A Song of Ice and Fire/ Game of Thrones series). That would be an absolute boon to the fanbase who wants to fact check things but are currently scared of spoilers.

Anyhow, the Joyoland-based version will suffice since it's all kosher (you can buy the game legally). Hell, the quality of the fan localizations is exceptional considering this is all fan work. I think the textures and such are even better than the Kai versions. Also has QoL improvements that best even XSEED's amazing ports of the other games.

I think Calvard just got confirmed. Not sure if there is anything else... I'm scared to look.

Kuro no Kiseki, confirmed further down.

Any day now...

Also, Nayuta no Kiseki remaster for PS4. Didn't think that one would ever get a chance at localization.

No localization but Hajimari will be on Steam in the summer. Clouded Leopard are the same folks doing the ports for Zero Kai and Ao Kai. Remains to be seen how good they are but, just need some localization team.

Edit: It's be hilarious (and kind of sad) if Falcom just said "Fuck it" and just have fans localize the games. lol

Lmao oh God, why. Cold Steel I has like the least interesting plot of the entire series.

As for the real reason I'm here. Kuro no Kiseki details and first gameplay footage! I keep forgetting the first Calvard game has already been announced...

There's a third clip but it's in a weird aspect ratio and super low quality, so not really worth posting. I don't really understand the decision to have their gameplay reveal in silent, unlisted youtube clips but uh... sure.

Also, that combat sure is different. It's taking a page out of Final Fantasy's book and turning into a semi-action game.

edit: !!!

If they do this then it might work but I'm not sure how it can include Rean full-time unless he gets swapped to the group who went west which would throw a wrench to the whole timeline. If I recall, Crow was generally with the other group so if they do a duel protags then it could work.

Spoiler

Would make the reveal of who's C pretty neat though, again, it depends on how they do it. I know Crow had his Divine Knight the whole time so him traveling around is no big deal.

If they had went full real-time, Falcom would've gotten rid of the whole SPD and Delay problem they had since the first game. Doing it this way kind of keeps that problem (unless they have finally solved it). Really like how there's no cuts when you properly engage in battle.

NISA to host a Falcom 40th anniversary stream on June 24.

I wonder if this is just re-hosting and translating the Japanese thing or if they'll actually have announcements for new english releases. With Ys IX coming out next month (on PC at least, it might already be out on console?), I think that's the last of their announced Falcom games. So that leaves the Crossbell remasters and Hajimari as potential announcements. Way too early for Kuro, I think.

Personally I really hope Crossbell is next. I waited this long to play Cold Steel III-IV, I might as well hold off a little longer at this point. And I'm not touching Hajimari until I've wrapped up the Erebonia arc so...

Hajimari is likely. I mean, someone (Clouded Leopard Entertainment) is doing/done the Switch/PC ports already. It's just needs a localization to go with it. Clouded Leopard Entertainment also did the Kai version of Crossbell. For English localization, that'd be NISA. Like sure there's the Geofront fan localization but that's purely on PC so that leaves a HUGE sector of the fanbase SOL with regards to Crossbell. It is a major issue that I think will be addressed by Falcom and NISA. I be surprised if those of us who played the Geofront patches would not pay for the official localization as well. We're hardcore and insane.

And I dunno if you every check out some of the stuff for Kuro but oh my goooooood. It's looking good. I also will give shit to anyone who wants Cold Steel's companion/dating system to come back. After so long, the Trails games are freed from the shackles of the decision to have that.

Now to wait for Thursday...

Yeah, I know about those ports but I view them as basically the same as the Joyoland ones. They're more easily accessible due to being on Steam but the lack of a localization means they're not an option for me. I imagine if a loc does happen, NISA will commission their own port (ideally once again by Durante's studio). But licensing can be weird and they won't necessarily have access to that other company's source code.

Monstrum Nox is weird. You can see the parts they recycled from Lacrimosa of Dana but the new elements feel so out of left field. Adol now has anime superpowers and a new goth look and there's an emphasis on vertical traversal that wasn't in any of the previous games. I'm not very far into it but I'm really digging it so far.

It's cool to see that Falcom isn't afraid to fuck with the formula a little. Besides, I think that Lacrimosa took the whole "exploring uncharted forest/island/whatever" concept about as far as it could go. Man, that game was long.
