toxicitizen
New localization blog from Durante about Cold Steel PC! Dude's an absolute beast and we don't deserve him. He was unhappy with the performance so he rewrote the game's entire rendering back-end in DirectX 11. And, well, I think the results speak for themselves... Also, releasing August 2nd! I also updated the first post with the newly announced stuff. Not sure if there's any point but whatever! Might as well have up to date info in it. toxicitizen
It seems like worries about port quality for Tokyo Xanadu can be put to rest, Aksys have contracted Ghostlight to work on it. I haven't played any of their ports personally because they mostly do obscure JRPGs I'm not particularly interested in, but as far as I can tell they do solid ports. toxicitizen
Second part of the blog posts by Durante is up. Covers the launcher and graphical options. Dude really went all out, this is gonna be so good! He's made a video comparison specifically to showcase the improvements to pop-in but man is it just night and day in general. The improvements to resolution, framerate, shadows and everything. It's... it's beautiful.
toxicitizen
Third and final blog post by Durante. Store page for Ys Seven is live! Says "August" for the release date, so I guess it's coming pretty soon. Then there's Lacrimosa of Dana next month. And that's not even including Zwei and Tokyo Xanadu. This might be too much Falcom for me to handle! Hold me, Mal!
Mal
It looks like I'll have a Falcom backlog. A Falcom backlog. If works slows this winter then I'll have time to ravage this backlog. If not... well, bullshit.
toxicitizen
The latest patch for Trails in the Sky the 3rd added a beta DX9 version of the game. Sounds like Sara had been working on it for a while and recently fixed an issue that was preventing her from progressing. The noteworthy thing here is that, because it's now an official feature in Cold steel, she has also added a turbo mode to the game. Similar updates will come to FC and SC as well. Gotta appreciate the dedication and support there. Now if only Durante's positive influence could spread outside of XSEED...
Mal
Wow, she was having issues with implementing it like yesterday so it's kind of neat to see Sara got DX9 and Turbo Mode in. And I got to say, I'm loving Turbo Mode for just the walking/running bits. Speeds things up just enough to make it count and it doesn't even speed up the music and sound! It's great for even a first run. I leave it off for battles though. Anyhow, CS during the prologue has just enough to perk my interests with the appearance of a certain prince and the mentioning of the Eight Leaves One Blade style by Rean. I was actually kind of turned off by the higher level prologue-prologue though since it's such a tease while you are trying to get a bearing of the game and mechanics*. Pretty neat to see that Silver Thorn is an art you can use though. It wasn't a thing until TitS SC for most people so to see Silver Thorn during a prologue of a new story is neat. Orbment tech sure has advanced. * I got to say that the movement and camera is definitely loose and not as precise as in TitS FC, SC and 3rd. It's almost distracting but I'm hoping it's just learning pains by Falcom that is overcome by CSII and surely by CSIII. Edit: Hard mode is actually balanced. Yeah, the in media res intro feels a bit... cheap and pointless all things considered. That's all I'll say about it. Just pretend the game starts with Rean on the train for now lol. 8 hours ago, Mal said: * I got to say that the movement and camera is definitely loose and not as precise as in TitS FC, SC and 3rd. I wouldn't expect any drastic changes in that area for CSII, though. I only played like 10 hours or so before shelving it but, much like FC and SC, it's essentially the same game as Cold Steel 1 as far as how it plays. toxicitizen
Was hoping for a little earlier but that leaves plenty of time to wrap up Cold Steel, at least.

toxicitizen
Pre-orders for Ys VIII are live. Also available on Humble and GOG. It's actually priced pretty reasonably in Canadaland. If it had been the usual 80 bucks I probably would've held off but I think I'm gonna have to bite now. No pre-order discount yet, though. I'm only about 15 hours into Seven, though, so I'm gonna have to finish that before the 12th. It's pretty damn good if you can look past the PSP graphics but it's in this weird situation like Napishtim was when it came out on Steam where I've already played the more refined version of the game (in this case Celceta), so it inevitably feels like a bit of a step down. But if this is the worst party-based Ys game then at this point it's clear to me that I'm not exactly on the same wavelength as the fanbase. Felghana and Origin are both fantastic and arguably as close to perfect execution as they could possibly be but I still like Celceta (and now Seven) better. Which makes me really excited for Ys VIII! toxicitizen
Why, though? Like, I genuinely don't get what's so much better about solo Adol. Is it a nostalgia thing? I love the dynamic of switching party members on the fly depending on what kind of damage enemies are vulnerable to. It's not exactly deep or anything but it's a hell of a lot more engaging than the bump system! Also, platforming was fucking terrible in the old games. The lack of jumping here is a massive improvement. Fight me!
Mal
I always felt that solo Adol created tighter combat. You can argue that switching party members is like switching swords but to me it doesn't feel as tight. And yeah, there is hints of nostalgia and me memeing the badass that is Adol fucking Christin. Baconrath
Is the PC port of Cold Steel II coming out before the one Tokyo Xanadu, or the other way around? Either way its like the same game engine or whatev :V

Well, it's certainly more focused, I can't argue against that. I can't help but feel like if I had gotten into the series years ago I might feel differently about it. Seven and Celceta definitely feel more bloated than Felghana but I don't really have a problem with that. Especially with a new release like Ys VIII, I'd probably be hesitant to pay a full 60 bucks if it was a short and sweet affair like Felghana. 25 minutes ago, Baconrath said: Is the PC port of Cold Steel II coming out before the one Tokyo Xanadu, or the other way around? I've heard November for Tokyo Xanadu but I don't think there's been any official announcement regarding the release date yet. As for Cold Steel II, they're only just getting started working on the port. Durante has hinted at a December release on the Steam forums but I'm not sure if he was being entirely serious. toxicitizen
Wait... what? Why is this a thing that exists? Also where can I watch it????
Mal
I watch that years ago. Since the series is making the rounds in Falcom related communities, I got to say, having the Trails background made the series way more hilarious. toxicitizen
PC version of Ys VIII delayed to unspecified date. Beta testers are under NDA but apparently word is going around that the port is pretty rough. I'd rather they delay it than release a broken POS and, to be fair, they do seem to be trying here. But ugh, yet another reason to be unhappy that NISA forced their way into a series where basically no one wanted them... Mal
I'm thinking it'll take a while unless they give up partway through trying to fix it. We'll see...
toxicitizen
I have no idea but the fact that they haven't given a new release date certainly isn't encouraging. Honestly, their biggest crime here is that they broke my Falcom streak! I was going to combo Ys Seven -> Cold Steel -> Ys VIII. I even finished my nightmare run of Cold Steel today! I guess I could go back and try to finish Gurumin or give Ys Seven a shot on nightmare right away but meh... toxicitizen
You idiot, Cold Steel isn't TitS! But yeah, Cold Steel III is coming out in Japan exclusively on PS4 in like two weeks. Makes sense that they'd want to get the biggest potential audience possible. The only surprise here is that they didn't get them out ahead of CSIII's launch.
