Visual Novels

Seems like we could use a thread for those games that can often be quite engrossing, but don't really get their own thread because it's impossible to discuss them without spoiling everything.  If you want to recommend a visual novel game or series you recently played to others, this is also a good place to do it.  Japanese and Western games both apply here, so feel free to talk about Telltale and its ilk here.

For starters, I recently downloaded Episode 1 of Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy game after seeing the movie, but I'm not really sure how I feel about it after playing it.  While I love the Guardians as characters, I'm starting to get this very, for lack of a better term, "Telltale-y" vibe from their games where certain characters are written out of character just for the sake of providing consequences to your choices.  For example, I said a very mild insult to Rocket, not even really an insult so much as I just didn't kiss his butt like he wanted me to, and he got extremely pissed off about it and took it way more personally than I thought someone like him should.  The game steers closer to the comic than the movies, so maybe Rocket's personality got a major overhaul in the transition to the big screen that I'm not aware of, but I'm getting this notion now that I've cracked the Telltale code, which is troubling.

I haven't played a lot of them yet but Princess of Ruin and Hakuoki: Demon of the fleeting blossom are really nice ones, they're otome visual novels. Also, if you're not afraid of erotic stuff, Swan Song is really badass. It has a really good and deep story. (Not otome)

And, I've actually tried my hand at a similar project that you can try out here!
