E3 2017

It amazes me that people can get worked up at bland Nintendo games any more. I mean, the rabbids + Mario game looks bizarrely delightful, but everything else is candy for kids.

I only played about an hour of the first two Metroid Primes and I thought they were bullshit at the time, so I have zero nostalgia for it. Mario Odyssey looks cute, I guess. Nothing Nintendo has shown in the past decade has made me want to buy a Nintendo console and this presentation didn't buck the trend. It did, however, continue the long trend of getting the games media to slobber on Nintendo's knob, but since it also gave Bioware a full-throated BJ at the Anthem announcement, I didn't expect measured analysis at this E3, anyway.

My ranking for this E3:

Nintendo
Sony
Ubisoft
Everyone else thrown together to make one boring pizza with a few good toppings, a.k.a. games

Ubisoft did a good job, though I wasn't particular thrilled by anything still. This E3 has been a lot of CGI cinematic trailers, but little gameplay. I guess that's true most of the time and why I forgot E3 was happening until I saw people taking about EA last Saturday.

Sony was the first one to actually get me excited. I'm not sure about playing Shadow of the Colossus again simply for a visual upgrade. I mean, it looks beautiful, but so does the original even with the lesser amount of polygons. There will have to be something additional for me to buy the same game again. I've also never cared for God of War, but this new one has me interested.

I also pray the new Spider-Man game holds up. I need a good Spidey game in my life again.

Nintendo won, not just because of Metroid Prime 4, but because of all the content announced. No extra awkward fluff, just here's some content here, and here's some content here. Metroid Samus Returns (Metroid II Remake) will give me a reason to use my 3DS again. The original was a handheld game, so I like that the new one represents the handheld platform. Mario Odyssey looks fun as hell and is suppose to follow in the footsteps of 64 and Sunshine.

And given that the Pokemon RPG for Switch is described as "core," a.k.a. mainline, that's got people in a frenzy. The only console Pokemon games that I found worth anything were Pokemon Snap and Stadium. Those other ones were not my cup of tea.
