Far Cry

Yeeha. Killing white american Christians. It's actually kinda funny that people have been calling it unpatriotic. It's made by a Canadian studio owned by a French company. :P

It'll be interesting to see if it's just Far Cry 3/4 placed in USA or if they'll have maybe a bit more to it, some modernisations based on more recent open world developments rather than the usual "radio tower map unlocks" expected atm from Ubisoft open-world games. (IIRC with W_D2 there is no towers to unlock, you just drive by places and hey you get a fast travel point).

They also have some character trailers too.

Boy, it is really easy to trigger white supremacists, isn't it?

FTFY.

And yeah, I haven't been all that interested in the series recently but this direction is interesting enough that I might actually jump in. I was pretty much sold right away on the first piece of art they released.

It should be said that development started four years ago, before all this Trump and alt right nonsense even started. Still, I think the inevitable controversy could end up actually helping the game's sales in the end. It wouldn't be the first time that's happened.

Well Far Cry 1 is purely Crytek so practically its own thing. Far Cry 2 has some really good ideas but terrible implementations and is Ubisofts fist Far Cry game (so the usual Ubi caveat applies in pretty much the "good ideas,, bad polish. Next one nails it". See Watch_Dogs and Assassins Creed as well). Far Cry 3 is pretty much the template for the following games, so if you bounced off it there, then you'll bounce off 4, Primal, 5 n n New Dawn. And likely 6 as well. It's mostly standard Ubi open world fare of towers around the map, there's bad guys with bases to take down, and animals to hunt to upgrade your gear, and then some minor additions. Like Far Cry: New Dawn there's supply runs, basically sub-maps you go to for smaller missions. They were kinda neat. I swear drones got added in too.

Oh and Blood Dragon, Primal, New Dawn are basically expandalones of the previous game. (though New Dawn was the most obvious in using the same map as it's officially set some years later in the same location). Blood Dragon is an alt-reality, and Primal is the same region thousands of years prior.

I really quite like the formula. Just hit me just right. Though a lot of it is stealth-archer. Also being an utter dick that spots a tiger in a cage, shooting open the cage and letting that just fuck everyone up.

Maybe jump in with 4? Villain is quite a bit more interesting (you've probably seen the alt-ending that you can get if you just do as you're told, rather than follow the games indicator arrows). New Dawn goes for cheap quite often, and due to the expandalone nature is a fair chunk smaller than the main games. And the newest, so the most up-to-date in terms of game mechanics. Plus a fair bit of Die Antword music.

Yeah, that sounds like a good one to start with if I'm gonna buy one, but I already own 3 so...
