Spider-Man

Looks pretty slick, seems to be disappointment on the QTEs. I'm personally more disappointed in the villains they've shown off (but I guess save some of the big guns for later?). I only really know of Mr Negative as the guy who was kind of a catalyst in making Anti-Venom

Also seems to tease Miles Morales.

I'm a huge Spider-Man fan, so I'm biased. It's definitely GOTY material as for the most part it has only minor flaws. Nothing deal-breaking, though I will say they didn't quite scale the combat proper in the beginning as the game expects you to web everything as a solution. Later on you get so much variety that you can approach fights however you please. Thankfully unlocking suits gives you the freedom of mixing suit powers with a different suit as well as having three different mods to practically abuse the combat mechanics.

Finished the game this evening. It's pretty underwhelming. The swinging is pretty great, and some of the story is neat but there's so much that's kind of "old fashioned". Which given the game was first shown off 2 years ago I'd imagine they had decent chunk locked down (that first teaser did have a lot of stuff that's in the final game).

You've got the combat lifted fairly heavily from the Batman games, which makes sense to do given it's one of the most praised comic book games, and stuff like the counter system makes much more thematic sense with "spidey-sense". Got the Ubisoft towers for whatever damned reason (I literally can't think of why they're needed). Got the backpack collectables. Got the drug-induced battles stuff, Got unnecessary stealth sections that drop any of the games main mechanics (though I guess do have a nice way of putting in some story elements).

It felt very heavily as the game story developed that it was more lining up a sequel than focusing much on the game at hand.

What with Miles Morales getting his powers, Norman Osborn not being Green Goblin but developing the suit and grenades and plenty of "goblin" like masks around his apartment, and Harry being Venom (which is an interesting idea).

As for the game at hand

I think they maybe relied a lot on the Spider-man 2 film to fill in on Ottos transformation for players, but it felt way too quick and sudden and nothing really made sense. In the film he continued his existing work and stopped at the end and redeemed himself. In this game Otto just suddenly snaps, decides to infect a plague on New York, release two prisons of prisoners on the city and even at the end is still enraged even knowing it's Peter, his lab assistant. It's mentioned throughout that he plans to expose Norman n all that but apart from attempting to record a confession out of him before throwing him off a building doesn't do anything of the sort.

None of Harrys friends seem to think it's odd that Harry has been in 'Europe' for 6 months and not contacted them in any way shape or form. Dunno about you guys but if I went on an extended vacation I'd be posting up a bunch on social media at least and this game clearly has social media, never mind a simple email or phone call.

And we never get an explanation of Mr Negative. Like it's implied a split personality n all that, and you are shown footage that shows Otto and Norman made him but never told why/how. And you basically just beat him in the boss fight and that's that.

Like I've finished the game so obviously I didn't find it painful to play, I just found that for the most part it was rather uninspiring and old-hat. Nearly all boss fights are the same thing of "dodge until triangle comes up, then zip in, do a few punches, then repeat until three mini-cutscenes of Spider-man bitching at them has passed"). I was immediately a bit worried early on when of the first three boss fights two of them were Shocker and I was 25% of the game complete. The side quests are, research stations aside, mind boggling lazy. I joked/bitched about as much on Twitter other day. You start the game with the Fisk & Demon Bases, and the Thug & Demon Crimes. Then you get to the half way point, after defeating those side quests, and you get the same side quests with but with Prisoners and Sable. And not really with new enemies, apart from some Sable guys flying about, all groups of enemies have the same standard shooting guy, shield guy, baton/sword guy, tough guy, sniper guy and occasionally laser whip guy (however that's explained). given they've got these 3/4 groups (thugs/ryker prisoners I'd say are same) maybe would have been more interesting to have more unique combat styles. Means if you're responding to a crime or infiltrating a base it's exactly the same. You've got all these fantastical gadgets and suits to collect (and I'm not pulling out my teeth to get all the unlocks for all of them) and yet there's not really a reason to change tactics because you're against Demons or Thugs. Also the game has some really stupid NPC AI. Like faction in-fighting has been a thing in games for ages so it's not really asking for some huge leaps, but Sable (pre-half-way point) will happily patrol right through a battle I'm having as a shop gets robbed and don't step in at all. They're just totally dumb skinned civilians. Was rather disappointing.

It's a licensed/comic book game that's not terrible but plenty over the last few years haven't been so it's not really a bar that needs clearing. The Lego Marvel stuff has been fab, Arkham series is highly praised. I've not played em but I hear Injustice is pretty decent too. I'd hold way back on the GOTY praise. "It's not shit" isn't "It's GOTY". There's far better open-world action games out there. I've remarked as such with friends that if anything it makes me itching to get back into Horizon which apart from a compelling story has enemy types that require switching out to different gear n tactics. And having the almost exact same KO sound effect as Arkham makes the comparisons so much more easier to make between the two.

No doubt a second game will be on the way, especially given it's one of the best selling PS4 games to date, and given they nailed most of the swinging and animation stuff and they've got New York all built I'd imagine a quicker turnaround, but I really hope they drop a lot of the heavily dated mechanics & tropes and maybe explore a more creative henchman/thug roster rather than different skins.

Sums up my view on it. I'm not sure how far in I am

Spoiler

just cleared out the last demon base and am tracking Tombstone

but while the game is fun, it's not blowing me away in the way that GoW did. Combat is great, traversal is great (I have only done the mandatory fast travel, web-slinging is too much fun and New York isn't that big) story is ok, but there is nothing genre defining or reinventing about it. The thing I am enjoying most is

Spoiler

that I am obviously helping Otto become Octor Doctorpuss but in-game me has no idea.

It's a really well delivered story thread that is great for people who don't know the comics and are in for one heck of a surprise and a treat for people familiar with the story as we get the delicious anticipation. Wish more of the game story telling was a subtle and effective as this.

Yeah, I don't necessarily want Miles to replace Peter, though I'd be okay with it. I just really liked that they set it up so he could step in, because then I wondered if they might actually kill Peter off at the end and have you play post-game as Miles, kind of like RDR. It made the outcome seem less definite.

I've stepped into the Twilight Zone, man.

Best Spider-Man game since Spider-Man 2 and I can't wait till the DLC arrives this month. It doesn't even follow any one comic book story or universe as its primary source. Actually, this Spidey is his own Spider-Man in the Marvel comics. We can always tote the idea that certain characters tend to lean towards a certain fate.

This Miles could replace Peter, or not. Both stories have happened before, so it's up to however Insomniac wants this universe to progress. Hell, Miles could be the one to die and Peter has another death upon him. The game seems to be pushing the idea that Harry Osborn is the host to a symbiote, or at least is being treated by one. This Norman doesn't really scream Green Goblin, even if he should have the tech. We could technically have Hobgoblin if anything.
