It's July Again. What are your favourite games of the year so far?

Yeah I don't have a problem with that, I loved GTAIV.

I know there's a difference, Dark Souls is the perfect example of something good I don't like. Uncharted, otoh, is a mediocre series that people trick themselves into liking because it has really good parts, but the main gameplay (the combat) is not good.

Yeah, Uncharted's strengths are the characters, the summer blockbuster plots and the set pieces. All of them elevated by Naughty's Dog's stellar cutscenes. I don't necessarily agree with mediocre (I just enjoy bullying Cowboy), but from a gameplay standpoint it's objectively nothing exceptional.

imo the combat encounter design is actively bad, and the only reason the games reache "mediocre" status is because the rest of the stuff is so great.

Again, this is without playing 4, which for all I know solved all my problems with the series and is a glorious masterpiece of game design.  But I doubt it.

I've just finished What Remains of Edith Finch and I'd like to throw it into the discussion. That game touches on some difficult subjects, but handles them in some very nice ways without making the topics at hand feel any less important. It's got this really interesting structure to it, a really nice soundtrack and doesn't stick around too long.
