Games You've Beat MMXIX

Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order

A solid 7.5/10. Though the fact people are listing this game as one of their GOTY's proves how weak 2019 was, IMHO. Combat felt tedious. The Zelda inspired temples felt... well, uninspired! The pacing of the story felt weird. The game itself was janky. At the very end, after the final boss fight, the character I was playing as kept falling through the ground. The whole experience felt longer than it needed to, each planet was bigger than it needed to be, occasionally after making good progress a scripted event would happen that would place you further back. Though overall it was a fun Star Wars adventure. I guess it's better than the Star Wars game I beat, Shadows of the Empire in 1998 on N64.

Celeste

Went back to it like two weeks ago intending to finish the last couple chapters and then do the DLC one. My plan was to finish a few short games I had already started before the end of the year but oooh boy, I did NOT realize what I was getting into. I had like 6 hours of playtime when I had initially stopped playing and now, well...

I was gonna wait until I was completely done with it before posting but it's obvious now that won't happen for a while. I got like less than a third of the way through the DLC chapter (based on a playthrough I saw on youtube) before realizing the huge mistake I had made. That chapter is insanely fucking hard and the screen I got completely stuck on is literally a tutorial. And it took me like 3 hours to even get there. So I went back and started playing through all the "optional" B-Sides and C-Sides levels and yeah, that's where the difficulty curve went lol. I'm still stuck on the last screen of the chapter 8 C-Side. I'm getting there but holy fuck is it hard. And then I can go back to the DLC, which should be easier now but is likely still going to take me a while to get through.

So yeah, Celeste is absolutely fantastic and you should all play it if you like good 2D platformers. As far as I'm concerned, it's up there with the likes of Super Meat Boy and Dustforce.

That is pretty impressive to have a clear backlog, well done. The only way I clear mine is selling consoles.

Thank you @TheFlyingGerbil! ?‍♂️ It was one of my two goals for the year and I'm glad I was able to pull it off. The other was the Great Wall of China marathon, which was neat and got me on the BBC (John Klak: American marathon runner). Not a bad year!

@Pojodin Jesus, that's an impressive list. And a clear backlog is amazing. I seem to bottom out at 3, I've gotten it that low repeatedly, but never less.

Thank you @TheMightyEthan! ?‍♂️ Between Dragon Quest IX, Death Stranding, and a few of the longer games being a thing, I wasn't sure I would be able to pull it off. But thanks to a friend, I was able to pull it off at the 11th hour.

@FLD oh man, Celeste was a fantastic game! The story and character development were interwoven thematically with the level design for the story. And the music was pretty solid too. Those last few missions on C side and the final area get absolutely absurd. That's where I threw on the cheats to see just what the final levels entailed and...yeah. It makes you use every trick in the book executed to perfection with quick timing. It reminded me of IWTBTG and IWTBTFG from way back in the day with how precise certain things had to be. Absolutely wonderful game that gradually cranks the optional level difficulty to migraine inducing precision.

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch (Switch)

I'm super late to the party, but I'm glad I joined. I think I'm finally becoming a person who likes JRPGs. I don't have a lot to elaborate on, it was just an all-around pleasant experience.

Yes! I played it way back at its initial release. The story, jejune though it were, really captured the feel of a Studio Ghibli film. Gameplay was pretty typical for a JRPG in terms of world traversal and combat, but the game really was a pleasant experience. Going in with no expectations and soaking it all in was probably the best approach for me.

I agree. Even at the end when it had a little oddness it was charming, because it was the sort of oddness that would be at the end of a Ghibli movie.
