TheMightyEthan
I guess it's time to make this topic. Sony released its first info about PS5. Not much is known, but they're confirming it will be backward compatible with PS4. Hopefully that includes a boost mode to run games smoother. Beyond that we know it will have a custom AMD Ryzen CPU and custom Radeon Navi GPU, with raytracing support, and an SSD. Also it's not coming until at least 2020 (no real surprise there). The article does talk about how they're going to be devoting more hardware power to audio processing, to create more realistic audio in 3D, so that could be interesting, but doesn't really seem like a game-changer. Mal
One thing I kind of hope for the base PS5 is that the main menu doesn't become a lagging mess akin to the PS3 and the now base PS4 after years of updates.
TheFlyingGerbil
Optimised SSD technology sounds awesome if it even comes close to that Spiderman demo - you'll be whizzing through those menus like a demon, Mal. I love the idea of 3D audio but anything I've tried has been fairly underwhelming so I hope they do genuinely make some strides in that area. Mister Jack
A while back there was a pastebin leak about the PS5. It wasn't given too much weight at the time, but a lot of stuff on there has been proven right with this recent info, so if anyone wants to see it again, here it is. https://pastebin.com/PY9vaTsR
TheMightyEthan
I hope it's right about the $499 price and we don't end up with something insane like PS3 at launch.

I don't think Sony is ever going to make that mistake again. It cost them way too dearly. Even without this leak I think, barring massive inflation, $499 is the most they would dare. TheFlyingGerbil
If that translates to £500 I will definitely not be buying it. If that price included the VR headset then I would seriously consider it. I really think I will finally be more sensible with my purchasing decisions this next generation though. TheMightyEthan
Assuming MS sticks with their "all 1st party games come to PC too" stance I'll only have one console to get this generation.
TCP
I feel like the PS4 just launched.
TheMightyEthan
I kind of do too, but if it launches next fall that'll be 7 years, which is the same as last gen (which was an unprecedentedly long generation at that point). TCP
360/PS3 generation felt really long but you're right, it will be the same length. PS4 just feels incredibly short, I guess we're getting old. Anyways, all the news from the Wired article sounds exciting (RAY TRACING?!?!) but also expensive as fuck. Would love to see Sony come in at an affordable price again. I'm playing less games now than I ever have, maybe I'll be fine waiting for a price drop... TheFlyingGerbil
I'm going to try and wait for the "slim", unless we hear rumours about a pro, as that approaches. Edited April 24, 2019 by TheFlyingGerbil
TheMightyEthan
I'm pretty sure I at one point claimed I'd wait for a Pro version of the next gen consoles, but now that one is on the horizon I'm discovering that I am a dirty, dirty liar. TheFlyingGerbil
Yeah, I don't know how much I believe what I wrote, so much as that is the level of restraint I aspire to. One thing for certain is that I have finally learnt my lesson with xBox so unless they do something completely bonkers that will not be sat under my TV next gen. Certainly a streaming subscription box does not appeal.
Mal
I mean, my brother got a base PS4 so a base PS5 would be a major upgrade. I probably chip in for his console since I use it semi often.
deanb
PS5 console. It'll go flat too.
Mister Jack
Interesting conference. I can't help but notice that there's still no price. Neither Microsoft or Sony seem to want to be the first one to fire that bullet for obvious reasons. Actually getting to finally see the console was nice, although I wish they'd gone into detail about the hardware and the OS a little more. They sure showed a lot of games, and while only a handful of them personally interest me there's still more good stuff than you usually get during a launch window. I told myself I was going to wait on the PS5 until there were five games I want to play on it but they already revealed three or four so good job, Sony. It was certainly better than the Xbox reveal earlier this year so I'll give them a solid B.

Mister Jack
One concern I have is that built in controller microphone. I really hope you can turn that crap off or at least limit it to a push-to-talk functionality. I don't want it picking up everything I'm saying at all times, nor would I want it picking up ambient noise.
CorgiShinobi
If I get a PS5, I can start getting 4K Blu-rays! Well, maybe. I don't think I want to bother with one more format. Still, I'll be going with the "physical disc" version of the PS5. I'm not fully comfortable with going completely digital on a Sony platform. It bugged the snot out of me that games I bought on the PS3 weren't transferable to the PS4. Unlike PC where the platform is always PC, Sony tends to get you stuck in the console generations. Not to mention the freedom of selling off unwanted games a number of years later.
TheMightyEthan
I'm not fully comfortable going all-digital because without being able to sell my games after playing them I can't afford nearly as many games (that's why I almost never buy PC games at launch or for full price). Also, get HYPE!
TheMightyEthan
Jesus tittyfucking Christ this thing is huge... I'm going to have to measure, I'm not actually sure it will fit in my entertainment center.
TheMightyEthan
Okay, I measured and I actually can fit it horizontally with about an inch of clearance on either end, or I could take out the shelf and it would easily fit vertically. TheMightyEthan
So here's a cool use of the adaptive triggers: in Deathloop if your weapon jams the trigger on the DS5 physically locks. https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-08-20-deathloop-blocks-the-ps5-dualsense-controller-triggers-when-your-weapon-jams Still think it's dumb you can't use a DS4 though. This is neat, but it's not actually critical to the game functioning.
