excel_excel
The do's and don'ts is awesome! Not being able to pause cutscenes is a bugbear of mine. As for fox news they have hit a new low. I didn't think it was possible but by bloody God they tried and hit a home run of completely and utter crass proportions. Bravo fox bravo! peteer01
I have a request/suggestion: I'm looking at all the sites, and I'm thinking, "Man, there's no way I have the time, nor inclination to canvass all of those sites for those articles I'd really like to see." Is there any chance we can make a Gaming News folder where people can post short quotes or summaries of article, linking to the source, and let us find and comment on them that way? There's already a small bit of this going on, and honestly, I'd rather the the small number of threads for articles that are post worthy than have to go digging for it. Maybe I'm just being lazy, but I've already seen this with the 11-year-old charging a ton of money on XBLA with his mom's credit card and the autistic boy's mom coming out and admitting that he had cheated, and I'd love to see a place for those threads, as they'd be very interesting for me. :-) Edit: Dean's article link above is another good example. deanb
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2066351/Random%20Files/bundle-Game%20Blogs.xml Grab this file. It's an OPML file and contains a bunch of sites pre-subscribed to. Then follow these instructions to upload it to Google Reader: http://www.ehow.com/how_5308482_import-feeds-opml-google-reader.html (assuming you have a Gmail account) And then prune to your tastes (there's a box with a down arrow next to each feed, click it then choose "unsubscribe") As for linking particular threads of interest it'll generally happen on the various threads. What we're actually hoping to do in future is use that Content tab up top to include a RSS feed of a few select sites so folks can pop on n read odds n sods. Making a single thread for people to drop in articles won't completely work as it'll just end up a solid mush as folks discuss various topics n what not. Technically I guess I should of stuff that Bulletstrom Fox thing in the Bulletstorm thread. But I was more using it to showcase why RPS rock. So yeah I guess we can look a bit more into the RSS feed page thing. You'll find if there's a particularly interesting article it'll end up with it's own thread like the 11 year old thing. I was actually thinking of an individual thread for each article. Even if I didn't comment on each one, I'd probably check them all out if someone here thought they were potentially thread worthy. (Assuming that people wouldn't create a post for just any article, just the ones they really thought were worth reading...like you said, similar to the 11 year old article) As for an RSS feed on this site, that'd be awesome. It'd be even more awesome if each RSS post came with a link to create a thread for comments on that article, or, if a thread already existed, to jump to and comment in that thread. :-) Edited February 10, 2011 by peteer02
deanb
Right this is just me fucking about (and I'm no technical whizz so it looks fugly for now) http://tay.gappoi.or...News/index.html Basically that's taking a feed from my Shared items on google reader. So I can hit "share" on an article, and it'll appear (eventually) on that page. It's only in test mode for now. edit: also it's in the order I share it not the order it hit that RSS feed. Which means because feeds are in reverse chronological order, I "shared" the most recent post first and that's ended up on the bottom. Future stuff shouldn't have that issue. Oh also that means no Daily Mail stuff as it'll only be things in my Google Reader feed.

I understand it's in the early stages, but whether it's a News tab, a News Folder in the forums or whatever other form it takes, I'm looking forward to commenting on stories here if there's a way to make it work. :-)
deanb
Yeah. The main problem is content is dictated by moi. So I'll probs go for more general stuff over game specific news. Anything that may or may not be interesting (can't promise it'll be great news) I'll just hit "share" on and pop it up there for folks. We can give a test run, scale it up or scale it down. As for commenting on each one, that won't be possible. You'd either need to grab the link n put it in a thread, or just go to the site n comment. I can use an RSS feed, but copying the entire articles across is a bit dodgy (an RSS feed has the "more" button which you can click to go to the source site). Eventually people might pick up on sites they like n what not and find they'll stick to reading that one alone or whatever. As for it's current look I'll see Rachel about getting a pale blue background put on it like the other articles. They started out with transparent, so I assume there's a setting somewhere. (which btw the Content button up top runs forum-user made articles n stuff. Folks are free to write stuff up n we can publish it to it's own article thing)
TheForgetfulBrain
I would like offer a surprising contender: http://www.pcgamer.com This is the relatively new web counterpart of the old gaming magazine. Now, first off, it's obviously PC only. (This, however, is kind of a bonus for PC fans, because this means additional exclusives and focus on games that would typically be skipped over in an all-inclusive news site) The website's design is also really pretty simple. That said, it's pretty excellent. Sometimes, some of the articles in the magazine and the editorial comments just felt like 'trying too hard' humor, but the majority of the articles on their website are really great. The authors are funny and intelligent, and they actively respond in the comments section. They also frequently hold really cool giveaways. I have them on Facebook and usually just look at articles that look interesting that they link on there, but I'd recommend giving them a shot. Their 'Minecraft Experiment' column is particularly awesome: http://www.pcgamer.com/2010/11/20/the-minecraft-experiment-day-1-chasing-waterfalls/
deanb
http://www.destructoid.com/dtoid-new-features-faq-viewing-preferences-and-groups-190844.phtml Heh... D'toid revamped their site too. Not a drastic change, but something similar to what Gawker were aiming for. Basically the hotness of a story determine it size. IF you look down the front page some are full articles, some are just minor leads with thumbnail image, and some are just headlines. Not a bad concept. Also notice the lack of complaints. (though just for Faiblesse I will point out that since D'toids recent revamp, they tweaked it a few months back, it is one of the most resource hungry sites on the net.) Joystiq still rocks the best redesign. It's clean and elegant, regular blog view. The articles have a platform tagging system that works pretty well, and with major tags at top for different types of content the site has. I think they need to pick one or the other on featured article bars at top, like drop the 3 view, and keep the timer bar thing up top. And the side bar has random useful things, rather than containing the blog scroll all crammed up.
deanb
http://www.google.com/reader/public/atom/user%2F03795303115311848498%2Fstate%2Fcom.google%2Fbroadcast - the feed http://www.google.com/reader/shared/deanbmmv - the site Seems my plan on a game new page thing failed. So I'm just going to suggest directly subbing to the feed or bookmarking the site. Basically as n when I hit share it'll pop up there. No guarantee I'll hit Share all the time though. Just give me a nudge if I lapse. I think what I'll do is aim for like 10 articles a day, bit of general news, some editorial pieces, n whateverness. If folks what it increasing, different content. Just yell up.

As for my idea of a News folder for News threads on the forum, this is an example of what I had in mind: http://board.pressxordie.com/topic/785-son-kills-mom-over-ps3-hides-moms-body-reports-mom-missing/ (That's a thread I started in Off-Topic because I didn't know where else to put it.) I'm guessing if there was a "this is how to post the link an introduction to a news article you want to talk about" guide and a folder for Gaming News, you'd probably see some good conversations there. ChiltonGaines
I know most peeps use an RSS reader, but for people who are either super, stupidly lazy like myself, or don't want to use an RSS reader, or just want to actually use a site, the Penny Arcade guys just threw out an endorsement for a new gaming site: http://nohighscores.com/
