2020 GOTY-so-far

Recommended Posts

Since we are halfway through the year, I thought everyone could tell us about what their game of the year so far is, and whether there's anything on the horizon you think might dethrone it.

Looking back at my backlog, I've beat shockingly few games that actually came out this year. If you don't count new releases of old games then all I have is Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Persona 5 Royal, and P5R is barely not just a re-release. If you expand it to include re-releases and DLC then I have a slightly better list:

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Halo Anniversary PC

FE3H: Cindered Shadows

Persona 5 Royal

Control: Foundation

Halo 2 Anniversary PC

Still though, nothing on that list really stands out to me. I liked all of them a lot, but they just don't feel like GOTY material. If I had to pick one though, it would probably be Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Ori was a great game, but I still don't find that terribly satisfying as GOTY-so-far.

If I expand it to include all games I beat for the first time this year though, then hands down it would be Death Stranding. That game was just so great, even though as I've said elsewhere I can't really articulate why. It did what it was trying to do perfectly, and it didn't overstay its welcome. There is no one aspect of it I can point to and say "this is what's great about it", it's just a very cohesive overall package. I think I also was in exactly the right headspace to play it, because overall it's pretty chill, and even the tense parts aren't really all that tense, and that's exactly what I needed right now.

As far as upcoming games that may top it, the three big ones are Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Ghost just because it looks like the Assassn's Creed game I've been wanting for years, Cyberpunk because I love cyberpunk and RPGs, and Spider-Man because the first game was so great. Two unlikely, but at least slightly conceivable options would be Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Halo Infinite. Both of those come from series that I have absolutely loved in the past, but have lost their luster in recent iterations. So I don't think it's likely either of them would end up being my GOTY but who knows, one of them may surprise me and knock it out of the park.

What do y'all think?

DOOM ETERNAL

This game took everything that made the 2016 awesome and cranked it up to 11.

Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077 and the other games coming out this year are going to have to work real hard to top it, no less because it's METAL as hell.

I do hope that AC Valhalla and Halo Infinite can come close, but even then, the way the combat works, movement speed, everything about Eternal is so good, it's more or less not going anywhere in terms of being my GOTY for this year.
