Mister Jack
Shin Megami Tensei V Just wrapped this up with the neutral ending. Took roughly about 50 hours or so. The story here is pretty basic and you definitely shouldn't expect a plot or characters as iconic as Persona 5, but the story was never really the point of the mainline SMT series anyway. It's all about team building gameplay here and there are some new changes and QoL updates that I appreciate. Maps are large and open now for the most part and you can explore them as you see fit, although it's not quite open world. Think more like the hinterlands from Dragon Age: Inquisition and you have a general idea. Of course, Shin Megami Tensei is a post apocalyptic franchise so most of the environments are going to be desert and rubble, but I nonetheless like being able to go where I want rather than getting railroaded down a corridor. The maps are also littered with energy balls that help restore your HP and MP during long expeditions and you can teleport back to your last used save point if you find yourself hurting badly. It goes a long way in helping to prevent frustration. However, this game can still be frustrating at times for the simple fact that it's freaking brutal. Unlike Persona, which gives you party members with the abilities you need to get through each area, the party makeup in SMT is entirely up to you and you alone, so if you go up against a big boss and you're carrying a bunch of demons weak to the boss' favored element then tough shit. Time to fuse or recruit some new demons. Buffs and debuffs are absolutely essential, especially where agility is concerned because critical hits give you extra turns while missing attacks takes away turns, which also applies to your enemies. There were many bosses in the game I don't think I would have been able to beat if I wasn't abusing the press turn system to take away their chance to attack more than once per turn. It's very strategic and pretty satisfying when you manage to put together a team that cracks the code of a particularly difficult fight. Unfortunately, there are two main issues I have with SMT that are pretty much baked into the franchise's DNA at this point. The first is that level grinding is going to be required at some point. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. There are rare enemies that drop items that give you an instant level up if you manage to kill them before they run away, but even then I don't like being forced to grind and thanks to a level scaling system you're pretty much forced to fight enemies around your level because anything too high or low will give you reduced exp. I don't know why anyone thought this was a good idea. Don't force me to grind and then handicap my ability to do it, you jerks. My second gripe is that you go into boss battles completely blind. While the game does warn you when a boss is coming so you can go back and save, unless you're using a walkthrough you'll have no idea what element the boss is weak against until you fight it, which means a lot of first encounters are basically going to be suicide runs while you figure out which demons you need to use. I actually recommend playing with a walkthrough just so you can cut out the middleman and go into boss fights with the right demons in your party the first time. Ultimately SMT V is a flawed game but also tactical, challenging, and rewarding. If you feel like most JRPGs are too easy then you might get what you're looking for out of this one. MetalCaveman
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine A fun, fairly solid third person shooter, some sections, like the turret stuff were a bit annoying, and I failed the last QTEs several times, but it's nothing that takes away from the rest of the game. If you're a fan of WH40K or are just looking for something to play, check this one out. Spoiler Fuck Leandros though, that bastard! Can't wait for Space Marine 2. \m/ \m/ Probably the last game I'll beat this year, so I'll start making my list soon.

toxicitizen
After skipping the last couple years, I actually gave enough of a shit to do my spreadsheet again this year! I think I even managed not to forget to log any games! Not that I played all that many compared to the ~50 or so I used to do in a year but it's certainly the highest it's been in a few years. Depression sucks lol. You can actually kinda see where I started getting better, now that I think about it hahaha. Only two games in the first 3 months of the year then around spring I got some good news and you can see the completion dates being closer and more frequent. 3-5 games a month is much closer to the pace at which I used to complete them. Cyberpunk 2077 PC Jan 31 Call of Cthulhu PC Mar 19 Titanfall 2 PC Apr 5 Mirror's Edge Catalyst PC Apr 16 Resident Evil 3 PC Apr 25 Ghostrunner PC May 2 Resident Evil 7 Biohazard PC May 6 Resident Evil Village PC May 13 Halo: Combat Evolved – Anniversary PC May 25 Halo 2 – Anniversary PC May 30 Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn PC July 4 Ys IX: Monstrum Nox PC July 25 Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster PC July 31 Final Fantasy II Pixel Remaster PC Aug 8 Final Fantasy III Pixel Remaster PC Aug 15 Chrono Trigger PC Aug 23 The Room 4: Old Sins PC Aug 29 The House of Da Vinci PC Sept 1 Eliza PC Sept 8 Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster PC Sept 20 Halo 3 PC Sept 26 Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon PC Oct 3 Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night PC Oct 23 Blasphemous PC Nov 8 Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward PC Dec 10 I was hoping to finish Stormblood in time, but even though that's what my plans are for tonight I chose to spend last night finishing to read Misery so I don't think I have enough time left to wrap it up by midnight. Looking at the list, I think some obvious goals for 2022 would be: continue working my way through Halo MCC so I can play Infinite keep trucking along in FFXIV so I can play Endwalker and I really need to go through the Yakuza series as well, since a friend bought me Yakuza: Like a Dragon for my birthday around October and I haven't touched Yakuza 3 in like two months... Oh and I need to play FFV if I'm to continue on to FFVI and, as was my initial plan, keep going through the series once I'm done with the Pixel Remasters... ....I want to play too many games. Maybe I should just go back to being depressed. Edited December 31, 2021 by toxicitizen
TheMightyEthan
From what I understand, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is separate enough that if you haven't played the others you won't feel like you're missing out (though if you have you'll pick up on stuff you would have missed). Even if that were the case (I was told in no uncertain terms that it isn't), I hate skipping installments in series. To the point where if the first installment in a series is on a platform I don't have access to I'll usually just ignore the rest of the serie unless it's a special case like Titanfall 2 where everyone is raving about it and the first one was mp-only. Besides, I love Yakuza and actually want to play them all. Might as well do it in order lol.

I'll let you know after I play it. The rest of it's fair enough though, if you want to play them anyway then no sense in skipping them, especially since as I understand it LaD does have spoilers for the others. Mister Jack
I've played every Yakuza so my answer is definitive: You don't HAVE to play the other Yakuza games to follow Like a Dragon if you don't want to, but if you have any intention of playing the previous games you'd better do that first because Like a Dragon spoils the hell out of what happens in the Kiryu saga. There are also references and characters you will appreciate more if you are already familiar with the setting.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, that's kind of what I'd heard, and was trying to relay (perhaps poorly), that you will get more out of LaD if you've played the others, but it's the kind of stuff where if you haven't then you aren't going to notice that you're missing it. And of course it wouldn't be me without the graphs! Apparently I kept my gaming pretty well spread out, there's a couple spikes but mostly it's right around 3/month. Obviously Playstation got all the love this year. I still have it divided between PS4 and PS5, but all of it was on my PS5, I just listed is as PS4 if it was backwards compatible instead of a native version. Next year I'm going to have to add Xbox in so I might stop making a distinction between current and last gen and just go by platform. PS4 and PS5 were pretty much tied for number of games, in fact PS5 had a slight advantage, but PS4 runs away with it in total playtime. That's because I played Mass Effect, Kingdoms of Amalur, and Surviving Mars all by backwards compatibility. Those three alone account for more than half of my PS4 playtime. It confused me that PC was so much higher than the rest, but then I looked and it's because I only beat two games on PC this year, Halo and Forza, and both were right around 27 hours. Apparently I leaned towards short games on PS5, and I think PSVR games in general are quite short, so that explains why that's so low. Next year I'm gonna put some green on the board! 1

Hey! A fair amount of overlap with the games we played! That's a very solid list!

I'll let you know after I play it. The rest of it's fair enough though, if you want to play them anyway then no sense in skipping them, especially since as I understand it LaD does have spoilers for the others. 6 hours ago, Mister Jack said: I've played every Yakuza so my answer is definitive: You don't HAVE to play the other Yakuza games to follow Like a Dragon if you don't want to, but if you have any intention of playing the previous games you'd better do that first because Like a Dragon spoils the hell out of what happens in the Kiryu saga. There are also references and characters you will appreciate more if you are already familiar with the setting. I didn't press for details but I asked someone that was playing it at different points through the game and at first they were like "yeah, it's fine" but by the time they reached the ending their tune changed to "yeah, uh, no." I'm assuming the huge spoilers for previous games is what they meant lol. But tbh I'm always skeptical of "yeah you can just jump right into this one" because if it's coming from players then their idea of "fine for new players" is probably wildly different from mine and if it's from the dev/pub then I just assume they're lying through their teeth because "you need to have played 7 games before you can play this one" isn't exactly great marketing. See NISA with Trails of Cold Steel 3.

Yeah, this was a great year for games. And a fair number of the ones you beat that I didn't I have on my list to get to.
