madbassman39
I believe that On Stranger Tides would have been better received if Dead Mans Chest didn't exist. I don't agree with the DMC love, it was a good movie but not the best movie of the franchise (Curse of the Black Pearl is the best by a mile). The one things I have always loved about the Pirates movies is the acting, they've always had fantastic actors.
TheMightyEthan
Wait, there are people who don't think the first one is the best one? Wut?
Mr. GOH!
Really, they are all terrible. Go see The Martian, people.
TheMightyEthan
Incorrect, the first one is great. I will not defend the second or third though. I'd be interested in your response to Dan's comments about the Martian in the OK Movie thread, specifically about the wheels coming off at the end. Faiblesse Des Sens
POTC is shit. All of them. Confirmed. Perhaps if every movie was about an hour shorter they'd be better.

I fear I may have been a touch harsh, maybe a little overly emotional. The Martian is certainly an enjoyable movie, I think I wanted more than that and didn't get it. The ending is imo, not good, but it I let it cloud my overall view of the film. It's got its floors; pacing, a severe lack of time dedicated to Mark and how tough he has it on Mars, and the background characters are barely more than cardboard cut-outs, but I think all of those are down to film length; the second to last scene in space though, I can't forgive that. The Martian is good, you should go see it.
FMW
Thank you FDS. That is EXACTLY it. Pirates of the Carribean is good goofy rollicking pirate adventuring fun, but the movies are always weighed down by these needlessly convoluted plots that distract from the simple pleasure of watching Johnny Depp do his drunk pirate thing while the theme song plays. There is a cut of the first movie that is 25 minutes shorter that is a classic. Movies 2 and 3 are so bloated that they should have been only one movie, and that one movie should have been shorter than either of them (Pirates 3 was TWO HOURS AND FORTY NINE MINUTES). Even then that movie wouldn't be a classic, but it would be watchable. I refuse to rewatch either of those movies as is. Movie 4... actually doesn't have a ton of fat. It's the shortest movie in the franchise and it benefits. Still could stand to lose about 10 minutes, but that's SO much better than what came before.

Mal
The Martian. I think they adapted it the best that they could. I also enjoyed a few of the changes from the books. Sure one of them is really stupid but I loved it.

Mal
Yup. I'm unsure if I like him doing it more or the line "Iron Man, Commander. Iron Man.".
deanb
The Martian Pretty damn good film, some nice touches throughout*. I'd say my only overall issue with it is that it used days throughout without a single mention of months, weeks or years so you're having to do all those calculations in your head to get a sense of scale (as best I can tell the film takes place over 2 years ish? ) It's a film that I think sells the idea of Mars better than anything NASA or similar would be able to do on their own. (and I notice it makes CNSA look good too, minor role but one that'll capture that increasingly important Chinese market). * How excited was Ridley Scott he could cast Sean Bean for a scene discussing Council of Elrond. Everyone in audience loved that part. The 7 months later to emancipated Mark was a nice touch I'd not even thought of until they showed it. I'll have to add the book onto my pile I think. Mr. GOH!
The dumb part at the end Dan refers to is dumb and not in the book but it does not truly affect how good the rest of the movie is. The Martian is a good movie. Go see it.
deanb
Yeah that bit near the end I was thinking "So everything else seemed very "scienced the shit out of", but this bit I'm pretty sure wouldn't work and would be a terrible idea for the reason people pointed out".
Mr. GOH!
Eh, there are a good number of science problems with the book and movie, now that I've read more about it. I think it was an io9 article that pointed out that Watney would be dead from radiation poisoning fairly quickly since it does not have a magnetosphere strong enough to protect him from solar radiation and the type of habitation used in the book and movie would in no way help protect the inhabitants. If we ever do establish even a short-term base on Mars, it would most likely be underground or dug into a mountain.
TheMightyEthan
It's the future, they've cured radiation.
danielpholt
I'd just like to point out that I really do like The Martian, it's a good; enjoyable sci-fi film that I hope we get more of in the future. It's got issues, and some of them are large, but for the most part I'm willing to admit that I was acting like the butt-hurt book fan that I try hard to ignore, however I'm only human. I was disappointed, but a week later I feel like I've accepted the film for what it is, and that's a bloody enjoyable film that I can't wait to watch again. So yeah, go see The Martian, you won't regret it.
deanb
The stone has been struck! But on the radiation front his method of heating surely won't have done too well for him in the long run?
TheMightyEthan
RTGs are really well-shielded against radiation, so he probably actually wouldn't have much to worry about for that as long as the casing didn't get broken.
Mr. GOH!
RTGs also most likely would not have been sent on a Mars mission that seemed to have plenty of power from other (mysterious) sources; they're too valuable.
danielpholt
The Salvation: A western with Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green. Sign me up. Tense, dark and pretty damn violent. Enemy: Basically my favourite film released in 2014. If you like dark, confusing thrillers you could do much worse here.
Hot Heart
Sicario Managed to go in not knowing much about it except that it was well-regarded, which is nice. Good thriller with some great performances and a lot of tense scenes. My only qualm is that by the end you're kind of like, "Okay then." Something just feels slightly off but it's hard to describe. I count five times Emily Blunt's character avoided/cheated death.
Mister Jack
The Peanuts Movie I will admit that I am biased due to having grown up reading Peanuts, but I think it was still a worthy adaptation. It is definitely made for people who hold affection for the characters, though, so if you don't already like Peanuts then you probably won't suddenly change your mind with this movie. Still, it's a nice film that ties up a lot of those loose ends that were left behind with Charles Schulz's passing. It definitely respects the source material, which makes sense because I heard his son was heavily involved in the movie's production.
deanb
Funny to see that in both threads. Anyway this weekend I was at my dads, watched Terminator Genysis with my dad (which I've already posted about) then on Saturday I was babysitting my younger siblings. I originally wanted to watch Doctor Who, which now I've seen it would have been a terrible idea for the younger kids if I wanted them to go to bed (it was all about how company of future made a device that stops you sleeping, unfortunately this mutates the "sleep dust" into terrible carnivorous monsters) So instead we watched Inside Out, which was a brilliant choice for making kids sleep since it has a plot element about sleeping and sorting your memories out and starting up "Dream Productions" that I could use to encourage them to turn in for the night. It was pretty good, some nice jokes, some touching moments and a good kid friendly look at concepts like depression and such. Man the bit with Bing Bong's self sacrifice was like "but this is a kids film, you can't kill off the imaginary friend!"
Mal
I watched part of Inside Out and yeah, it's pretty great. I have to say though, the aesthetics is so weird when you focus in on the hair/fur of characters and then compare them to the smooth faces of some other characters or even the background. Something seems off about it.
