staySICK
the above conversation kind of makes me want to watch Saved! again, funny movie. ...drat, Netflix streaming fails me YET AGAIN. That's like... 6 or 7 movies in a week.

That reminds me I got to about 10 minutes towards the end of that film once and the dvd started skipping. Damn you love film! Still need to re-rent it. Thursday Next
Saw True Grit (Jeff Bridges) last night. Great film, great performances. Funny, heart-warming and tear jerking. Classic Coens, one of their best imho.
Battra92
I kinda thought the exact opposite of Easy A. Seemed like the film was made by someone who hates christians but has never actually met a christian. Another film like that is "SAVED!" I was offended by everything in that movie save for Mandy Moore's cover of "God Only Knows."

Classic Coens, one of their best imho. Heh. I just saw that last night. Jeff Bridges was great and it was really good, but I found the ending a bit 'Umm, OK...'; which I guess was the point? Also, 'If you would like to sleep in a coffin, that would be alright' Edited February 18, 2011 by Hot Heart

Those people were EXACTLY like the people I knew.

Battra92
This is a great Pacifistic film made in 1919 by the great French director Abel Gance. When filming Gance was asked who he accusing. He replied "I am accusing war. I am accusing man. I am accusing universal stupidity."
deanb
Was just about to head off to EE to get this thread, thanks for dragging it to the top of new stuff. Just finished I, Robot (had a bit of a break in between). It's still a good film. Now I'm more into this stuff I can appreciate some of the affects work more (some of it's much more obvious where it's bad mind) The book is better, though is should be noted the film is only loosely based on the book. For one the book robots are illegal on earth. They're manufactured on earth, but shipped disassembled to the outlying colonies n space stations. Also didn't know that Sonny (the main robot) is Alan Tudyk. He acts for him too, just digital robot overlaid.
SomTervo
Also didn't know that Sonny (the main robot) is Alan Tudyk. He acts for him too, just digital robot overlaid. I remember finding that out and being totally stunned. He does the English accent perfectly. This a guy who can do a space pilot in a Space Western's accent perfectly, too... Not to mention a pirate, in Dodgeball.
Mr W Phallus
Finally got down to the local cinema today, and saw True Grit. It may not live up to the Coen Brother's best stuff (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) but it was thoroughly enjoyable none-the-less.
TheForgetfulBrain
Not perfect, but pretty effing badass, and its heart is in the right place.Plus, Ryan Kwanten.I'd been wanting to see this for quite a while, even pre-ordered it on Blu-Ray and forgot about it till it came.Anyway, I finally got around to watching it - yay! Faiblesse Des Sens
Speaking of Saved! I ended up catching what seemed like the last 2/3rds of it today. Mildly funny and enjoyable. Also lead chick from weeds and peter from weeds being a couple in the movie= mind blown
Mr W Phallus
I (re)watched The Prestige yesterday. I remembered being a bit disappointed by it the first time I watched it, but I'm not sure why because even knowing all the twists beforehand it was still a great film the second time. It's on iPlayer at the moment so if you haven't seen it and you live in the UK (I'm guessing BBC iPlayer is UK only) I recommend you stop what ever you're doing and watch it right now. Just finished I, Robot (had a bit of a break in between). It's still a good film. Disagree. In my opinion, it's "not bad for a Will Smith vehicle / 2hour exercise in product placement", but that's about all I'd give it. The best I can say about this film is that it is inoffensive. I think that I am Legend is a far better old sci-fi story -> Will Smith film conversion, however, I really didn't like what they did with the story. Not saying Dean is wrong, just that I disagree with his opinion. How is it that Hollywood always misses the point of these stories? The Ring - It's not about seeing a circle and dying, the titular "ring" is a reference to what you have to do to survive, i.e. pass the film on to another person and continue the "ring" until you come back to the start. I a Legend - Is not about become a hero to the survivors, it's about a man becoming the equivalent of the "bogeyman" to the "infected" and thus becoming a legend. deanb
Well I wouldn't say it missed the point (which is the three laws are flawed and lead to the inevitable outcome that a robot would out think them. The laws were man made after all). It did quite well in combining elements of Little Lost Robot, with that being Sonny. Though a NS-5, not NS-2 like in the book. And then VIKI kind of acting similar to "The Machines", in bending things a little bit to shape the world to how she saw fit. Though The Machines were subtle, a robot uprising was not. NeoStarr
Finally got down to the local cinema today, and saw True Grit. It may not live up to the Coen Brother's best stuff (Fargo, The Big Lebowski) but it was thoroughly enjoyable none-the-less. Not that I've watched this recently; but how many people saw Intolerable Cruelty? I never hear anyone talk about it and a lot of people don't even realize it's a Coen bros. film but I thought it was hilarious. Comedy in the same vein as Lebowski about divorce lawyers and gold diggers falling in love.
Battra92
It was an interesting little movie and definitely a time capsule to another time and place. Also, Anita Page was cute as a button when she was young.

NeoStarr
Did anybody see Red State and is it as good as it looks? Just found out about it. Was never of the opinion that Kevin Smith was a bad filmmaker; and I like following any Westboro drama that pops up in the news. Plus I find Smith particularly interesting when he's talking about religion. Reviews seem kind of meh though. EDIT: Ah, nevermind. Apparently it's only in festivals until October anyway. CorgiShinobi
I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but yeah, I watched Moulin Rouge a few nights ago on Netflix. I've seen it before, and every time I shed man-tears. I forgot how zany the movie was, but that's more so because it's in the first half. I tend to remember more of the drama in the latter half than the crazy, and catchy, music and visuals early on. The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return... :'(
Mr W Phallus
I watched Festen (aka The Celebration) today in my cinema module, and it was brilliant. Incredibly uncomfortable at times for all the right reason, I'd definitely recommended a watch.
NeoStarr
I watched The Troll Hunter the other day. It's a Norweigen movie done in the mockumentary style about a group of young film-makers who stumble upon a Troll Hunter and discover a government conspiracy to cover up the existence of trolls. It sounds corny as all hell but it's fairly well done, all things considered. Yesterday I was looking for something to watch and checked out the trailers for a bunch of the movies in this thread. Settled on this one. Sooooooooooo glad I did. Was delightful. The Troll Hunter is a such a lovable character that I just wanna cuddle up in his beard and die. Also; the pseudo-scientific explanations they give for everything are pretty well thought out. All the natural explanations for fairy tale stuff that doesn't require a huge stretch of the imagination (I mean, of course it's bullshit, but the justification for things like Trolls turning to stone has enough basis in reality for it to hold some weight).
