CorgiShinobi
The two times that the line, "This is madness" was used during the film, I could hear people quietly saying, "No, this is Sparta!" I whispered that to my father when we saw the film Friday. It was pretty good, but with myself not being well educated in Thor, I can't really say if Thor was... Thor. I also got to watch my Blu-ray of Green Hornet. In short, it was better than I expected. It wouldn't be my go-to [super]hero movie, but it was definitely entertaining. At a price of FREE, I can't really complain.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Fast Five was pretty entertaining, though mind-numbingly stupid. Also, it went on for way too long. A part of the plot they focus on for something like 30 minutes gets ditched for a more blunt A-to-B method, and it is rather frustrating to see it thrown under the bus like that. And the ending reminded me of Return to the King; it just wouldn't end!

Lets spend twenty minutes stressing over the cameras, ultimately just to jack some cop cars and drive right in. But even then, they never went in stealthily like they planed, so even that idea got scrapped! Yeah, it was a mess, but a damn entertaining one. Hot Heart
Just back from Thor. It was pretty funny but got a bit...less good towards the end. I'm sure some of the twists don't hold up if you actually think about it but it was still entertaining enough. Natalie Portman and Jaimie Alexander were v nice too. Thursday Next
Saw Hanna last night. A-fucking-mazing film. Go see it. Everything from the cinematography to the chemical brothers soundtrack kicked arse. The acting was spot on, in fact, Blanchett was probably the weakest of the cast, which is saying something as I think she's generally a pretty good actor. So glad I skipped on Priest to see it, Pirates next week. Yargh!
SomTervo
Video's down, Duke D= I'm not sure about Hanna. It looks like some unrealistic version of... Leon meets Let the Right One In. I'm not going to the cinema much atm, so I prolly won't see it, but if I get the opportunity I may take it up. Anyone seen Insidious? I think it just looks the same as Paranormal Activities, but worse. A friend went to see it last night. Speaking of horror- I got Jacob's Ladder on Blu-Ray. Can't wait to watch it through the week. Meant to be a seminal and original psychological horror. Maybe even the original psychological horror.
Thursday Next
I was expecting something like that Jessica Alba series about cat people, I'm pleased to say it was nothing like that. I'll put the rest in spoilers, not giving away an plot points but if you want to go to the film knowing as little as possible, who am I to stand in your way? I never thought Hanna was "unrealistic" (depending on how far you can suspend your disbelief Hanna never seems "superhuman". I'll give you the Leon part it does *feel* like Leon. It's a beautifully paced film that spends a lot more time developing the characters than it does explaining why the person is some sort of super-ninja-assassin (I much prefer character development to exposition). The action scenes are spaced well, the direction is superb. I really can't praise it highly enough.
Strangelove
I saw 8 Mile again a few days ago. Its such a good movie. Not great, but still very good. Only thing that bugs me is the shitty ending disguised as a good ending. Everyone I talk to thinks its a happy ending. Its not. He loses the girl, he still has a shitty job, he still lives in a shitty trailer with his mom, and his mom is only briefly ok since she only won 3200 dollars, which will run out soon and she'll eventually go back to her old ways. And those black guys are probably going to beat the shit out of him again.
Yantelope
Finally saw Megamind. It was enjoyable. I also watched Robin Hood finally and it was meh.
Thursday Next
The ending isn't all bubblegum, rainbows and sunshine, but it is positive (imho). He gets over his slutty ex. He manages to keep his job. His family doesn't get evicted. His mum kicks out her loser boyfriend. Plus he beats his rivals where it matters. If he gets jumped and takes a shoeing, his bruises will heal, he still has the moral victory, his main rival is a laughing stock. That coupled with the fact that he managed to get over his writers block is all positive. Sure, he doesn't sign up to a major label and become a rap-star, but then if he did people would moan about it not being realistic. I suppose it depends on your "conditions for victory". As Rabbit himself said "Hey Sol, do you ever wonder at what point you just got to say fuck it man? Like when you gotta stop living up here, and start living down here?". It's not necessarily a defeatist statement, it's also one of acceptance. He still has his dreams and ambitions, he just accepts where he is now and learns not to hate his life. Like I said, not sunshine and rainbows, but who wants yet another bullshit story about someone who lives "The American Dream"?
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Everything Must Go. An excellent movie, with a great performance by Will Ferrell and the rest of the supporting cast.

Its about this classmate of Bono who forms his own band at the same time Bono forms U2. GO WATCH
Toshi
I saw Thor and I thought it was pretty good. Better than I expected at least. I now am looking forward to Cap Am and Avengers.
Mr W Phallus
The Virgin Suicides. I really like films (and books and TV series) that critique the superficial veneer of American suburbia. The book is great too, though I don't think I ever did read the last chapter.
TheFlyingGerbil
I remember being slightly disappointed by The Virgin Suicides, I think because of all the fuss surrounding it and when I saw it, it was just an average film to me, maybe a bit slow. Just watched An Education and really enjoyed it. I thought the acting was great by all the actors and it kept up its pace which can be a problem for that sort of film. Mr W Phallus
I'm too young to have caught any of the hype when The Virgin Suicides originally came out, when I first watched it years ago I'm pretty sure most of the film went straight over my head anyway. I'm sure having studied the book briefly at A Level also added to my enjoyment as for most of the film I was analysing how the movie brings out the themes of the novel and comparing the two. Also thanks for reminding me about An Education, I've been meaning to watch it since it was nominated for all those Oscars.
TheFlyingGerbil
well, you just missed it on tv this week! I may have to try the Virgin Suicides again. Maybe I'll get the book first, but usually having read the book just makes me like a film less not more
Hot Heart
Attack the Block. It was entertaining and had a good mix of things but it was definitely aimed at a younger audience. Not a bad thing obviously but the humour was mostly pretty simple. I was actually surprised at how explicit some of the gore was. A couple of other things bothered me; I won't go into one in case of spoilers but the other is the dialogue. I get that the guy did his research, but at points it felt just thrown in (or phrased poorly) to show he'd done his research. Also, I remember calling my cousin an idiot years ago for referring to police as 'the feds'...seems young'uns are still that dumb. Apparently they use the term 'five-oh' too. I guess you can't stop that sort globalisation but those are American terms. On a side-note: I had Skittles and there is now a blue one. It is nice! Thursday Next
Pirates O' the Caribbean 4. Great film, more of the same really. Jack and Barbosa carry on their friend/foe relationship Gibbs is still Jacks right hand man, McShane played a ruthless Blackbeard. Everything I liked about 1-3 was there, without the bland two dimensional love story between Will and Elizabeth. Surprised at the 12 rating, it was a bit vicious in parts, I'd think twice about taking a very young child to see it, unless you have confidence in their fortitude. Savvy? It's a 12 rated Disney film... and the fourth in a franchise. Most of the complaints seem to be that they've seen sword fights and Depp's Sparrow before, but, well, I don't know... It's a pirate film, swashes get buckled, timbers get shivered and swords get fought.
Mr W Phallus
Well I did read one review that said: The worst thing is that despite the massive problems there is a really good and really fun 100 minute film lurking around in there, somewhere. Which was pretty much what I was expecting, moments of brilliance along with a lot of average ones, but that's as positive as it gets. I agree that people seem to be reviewing the film too harshly, and I don't mean that in the usual Hollywood apologist 'It's just mind mindless entertainment' sense. For all that the previous films were bloated and flawed, they managed to deliver some great humour and great action set pieces and if this one follows that trend then it doesn't matter how much of a cash in or more of the same it is. TheFlyingGerbil
PoTC is a franchise I have never been able to get into. I guess that won't be changing with the new one. Give me cutthroat island any day.
