Last Good Movie You Saw

I love the Sony movies wherein a random PSP is tossed in.

By far the worst product placement I've seen is in the later episodes of Bones, where whole chunks of dialog are devoted to fawning over their new Toyota vehicles (all of them mysteriously replaced their Chevys with Toyotas during a season break). It was so obnoxious:

Daisy (looking around interior of car): Why do you drive a minivan? Do you have kids that we don’t know about?

Angela: I’m an artist, Daisy, and the Sienna has plenty of room, plus I stink at parallel parking and that back-up camera thing is like the invention of the century.

Man I feel weird now. I actually didn't notice the Acura one so much. The one that stood out like a sore thumb for me was the State Farm one. I actually stopped being immersed in the film when I saw a giant sign for State Farm

I mean I'm glad Iron Man 3 will be coproduced by China and errthang, which hopefully means less obvious product placement.. but I don't want Iron Man to selflessly go to China and save the chinese citizens, then talk about how much greater this nation is to the US.

It becomes obnoxious when like in a recent episode of Chuck

"I brought BMTs from subway!"

"From the fresh fit menu?"

"Yep, I'm watching my weight!"

Hehe. Well, Subway pretty much saved the show, so I can let those moments slide. Although, it was a shame that Big Mike's role was pretty much reduced to 'Subway salesman'.

Iron Man is like the embodiment of capitalism and the "America, Fuck Yeah" attitude, in some ways even more than Captain America. I can't imagine that there will be any product placement of ideologies outside of that.

My wife pointed out those scenes in Bones to me because they were so bad. One of them had a whole 30 second scene where they showed how the car parked itself. It was really really terrible.

"Wow! It parks itself"

"yeah, it's a new feature called active parking assist! (or something like that)"

"that's amazing!"

Usually stuff like that goes right by my wife but it was so bad even she was annoyed by it.

Oh yeah! The State Farm one was obvious as well, especially since it looked like they just threw the signs up onto an abandoned building.

Captain America isn't like that at all. That's why those two characters always fight. Iron Man is the extreme version of modern America, whereas Cap is supposed to be the epitome of old America.

Right, I left out the middle of that thought, which was "Iron man represents the ideology of America in some ways more than Captain America."

I'm just pointing out that America does not have one idealogy anymore. We did at one point, but definitely not these days.

I know, that's why I said "in some ways." I suppose it would have been more accurate to say "Though ideologically quite different from Captain America, Iron Man also embodies what some perceive to be American values."

The reason I connected Captain America to the "America, fuck yeah" attitude is not because that's his attitude but because he is supposed to be all that is great and wonderful about America made flesh, and therefore is a product of that type of attitude.

You know, it's almost as if Captain America and Iron Man could lead two different sides in a Civil War. ;)

I just read up on that and it's interesting to me because, based on their personalities in the movies at least, I would have pegged Captain America and Iron Man as being on the opposite sites to what that story has them on.

Yeah, I believe one aspect of it was how it had forced the characters into roles that are the opposite of what you'd expect. I haven't read it in a while but I believe there was that tension over just how fit Tony Stark could be to lead the thing, and how even someone like Captain American would take such a stand. I think the Secret War arc had gone some way towards fracturing the team as well.

The whole concept was really quite good but the actual execution was incredibly poor. Resorted to demonising the pro-reg side so hamfistedly.

I know Marvel: Ultimate Alliance II used those story arcs to forge a slight variation on the whole thing and it was actually alright. I kinda wish they'd make a new X-Men Legends though.

Stuff like this makes me glad I don't watch TV, save for the shows people recommend to me that I find on Netflix.
