deanb
Yeah I know 60minutes is officially a feature. I still feel that 90 minutes is the proper length of a movie. 60minutes is "long TV episode". It's also way too short for what they charge at the cinemas. WTF
Yeah I know 60minutes is officially a feature. I still feel that 90 minutes is the proper length of a movie. 60minutes is "long TV episode". It's also way too short for what they charge at the cinemas. Honestly very few 60 minute features run and if they do, they'll stretch it to 72 with credit sequences and some random footage. Thing is if its really 60 minutes then it's not usually a major studio film these days unless it's arthouse or even indie so it won't run in the cinemas for too long. And running in the cinemas for arthouse and indie films is just advertising. The bulk of their money is made through the longtail distribution which was DD was coming in till they inflated the prices and isps charged for bandwidth and people stopped buying them and just started streaming them but that's getting OT here . However honestly if it's a 60 minute film, unless the content is that unique they aren't really expecting a lot of cinema tickets to be sold. It playing in the cinema is just advertising since a film that gets played at one is heard of by people and thus gets some much needed attention. Yantelope
Crap, even Snow White was 83 min. I remember it being shorter though.
CorgiShinobi
The Great Mouse Detective, another great Disney film, is only 74 min.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
I saw Deathtrap. It was good! Michael Caine sure loves movies with gigantic twists in them.
Luftwaffles
Finished The Men Who Stare at Goats. Surprisingly good, even though I'm not a George Clooney fan.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Insidious. Fuck sleep. I won't sleep. You can't make me sleep tonight. It got too explain-y halfway through and I was ready to write it off but then James Wan (the sly bastard) pulls it all through for a freaky finish. I will watch whatever James Wan makes next. I loved the first Saw (he made that) and I love what he did with this one. I don't know what I'll do when that Del Toro movie comes out. If this one was only PG-13, and Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is R for "terror", then I'm fucked.
Mr W Phallus
I really enjoyed Men Who Stare At Goats but the ending is so cringey. (I really like George Clooney though so the odds were in it's favour).

Hot Heart
Watched JCVD. It had some really good direction and Jean-Claude Van Damme really can act. I think it just about manages this weird monologue he delivers to try and explain himself (many marriages and drug problems) because the film is not afraid to take jabs at him and is essentially deconstructing his persona. Of course, he still gets to come out of it looking 'good' but that's to be expected.
CorgiShinobi
Cap'n 'Merica! Really, it was awesome. I'm definitely going to look forward to the Blu-ray. Unlike Thor, there was a good spread of action. Tommy Lee Jones was one of my favorite characters, and really there weren't any bad characters. Even Stan Lee's appearance was funny and added to the scene.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Went to see Cowboys and Aliens. I was completely surprised that it was a good film. The previews made it look dire, but I couldn't pass up on Paul Dano, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell and Clancy Brown all in the same movie. What DID look dire, however, was the trailer for "Battleship". Yes, the board game Battleship. Now how do you make that into a movie? Do you have "The Hunt for Red Octobor" or "U-571" by staging crazy naval warfare? Of course not. What you need is FLYING ALIEN SPACE BOATS! And of course, they get Liam Neeson to say his Trailer Quote (side: I love Liam Neeson to death, but even I'm starting to wear thin on Hollywood's penchant for putting him in everything to say stupid, stupid lines), "Fire weapons." "Which ones, sir?" "ALL OF THEM." EDIT: Forgot Sam Rockwell, whom I also adore. Though they didn't have a patented "Sam Rockwell Dance" this time. BrainHurtBoy...2
I saw this a while ago, but I saw it again today. The Tree of Life. I don't want to discuss the movie too much, because I feel it could get devalued that way, but I'll say it was very Malick-y, and absolutely brilliant. It's one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. If you like Malick movies, you'll like this. A lot. It was great.
CorgiShinobi
See, I've been telling people that "Cowboys & Aliens" only seems ridiculous because of the title. Alien invasion, and etc, are always set in the present day. This time it's an earlier time of Earth's history. It's not like we're going to see a cast of spaghetti western cowboys have a showdown with a bunch of little green men.
Hot Heart
Watched Doc Hollywood the other night. Forgot how great it is. Some wonderful lines and characters in there.
CorgiShinobi
Deathly Hallows Pt. 1 Yeah, I haven't seen it until now. I mean, the movie embodies the boring half of the seventh book, so I was never really eager to see it. I finally got the chance by renting it at Redbox. Near the end it kinda felt like it was dragging on, but it had its exciting moments. Pretty good, and really, I can now tell me I've seen the film because people will assume I hate Harry Potter with me not having seen this film. Honestly, I just like the series. I wanted to see Pt. 2 for a while now, but I'm not keen on the idea of viewing in a theater alone.

The title makes me think it's a "Night in the Museum" style comedy romp, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to take it more seriously than that. Is it supposed to be like "Way of the Warrior" (Cowboys and Ninjas)? If so, I'm interested, but really, I liked Way of the Warrior's style more than its substance. Apparently it is quite 'hard-edged'. I can't say the trailers ever suggested any sort of humour at all. http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/reviewcomplete.asp?FID=136721
Thursday Next
In the trailers I seem to recall I saw Harrison Ford looking scared like he does when suddenly and unexpectedly outnumbered by hordes of Stormtroopers/Natives/Ants so wasn't sure if that was somewhat slapstick-esque. "Cowboys" is, for me at least a light hearted term. You play Cowboys and Injuns when you're a kid. When you grow up you watch Westerns / Spaghetti Westerns. First to admit I'm judging a film by the cover, which is why I asked if someone, preferably someone who's seen it could let me know what sort of film it is. Basically, is it more "Men In Black" or "Way of the Warrior"? or is it another beast entirely?
BrainHurtBoy...2
Yeah, I just saw it. It doesn't really belong in this thread, but since questions are being asked here, I'll respond here. It was alright. Not super entertaining, pretty soulless and kinda stale, but alright. I dunno if I'd recommend it. This much, though, I can say. There was ZERO comedy in it. Like, it's not a funny movie at all. It's not like MIB or Way of the Warrior, it's like a serious drama/action movie where cowboys fight aliens. As I understand it, they were somewhat tied down to the name since it's based on a comics series or something.
Hocking
How to Loose Friends & Alienate People I've had it on DVD since it came out, but never actually gotten around to watching it. Stuck it in last night as I didn't particularly feel like watching anything else I've picked up and have yet to watch. Surprised by how much I actually enjoyed it.
