Hot Heart
Super. Oh, my word, what a messed up film. It's got a good mix of very dark humour as well as drama. So many bits had me cracking up and then cringing the next. Rainn Wilson is great and Ellen Page is a complete psycho.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Super. Oh, my word, what a messed up film. It's got a good mix of very dark humour as well as drama. So many bits had me cracking up and then cringing the next. Rainn Wilson is great and Ellen Page is a complete psycho. So are you a James Gunn fan now? He's writing some upcoming Japanese game. Sudas next? I can't remember
Hot Heart
I would probably be a James Gunn fan but we don't really get a lot of his stuff over here so haven't seen a lot. His PG Porn series was funny, but I never bothered with Slither. Really want to see his old film The Specials though; especially since I found out it was like a script I have been working on...obviously he did it many years before. I did see that he was working on Lollipop Chainsaw, and I think that'll make a neat combination. Very interesting.
P4: Gritty Reboot
Saw the new Harry Potter finally. Despite some issues (see below), I enjoyed it. Issues exclusive to the movie * Harry's triumph over Voldemort seemed anti-climactic. He dissolved into dust. DUST. No one even acknowledged him when he came back. I really didn't feel like YOUKNOWWHO got his comeuppance. * Harry stumbling out of Hagrid's arms and running away. Just looked really silly. Issues I had with the books too * Snape is the most worthless spy ever. * Harry's death and subsequent resurrection is a giant cop-out. * There's no way Mrs. Weasley could kill Belatrix. * The "bloodbath" was kinda weak. None of the main characters died. Other than that it was well-done and powerful.
deanb
Biggest cop-out ever. The snape bit was goood.
BrainHurtBoy...2
Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It blew through all of my expectations. The critics were right, it's the best mainstream movie of the summer. A must-watch. There's one particular moment in the film I can't spoil for any of you, but it's one of the most shocking, electric scenes I've seen in a few years. Not an action movie at all, a very dramatic drama more than anything. Definitely worth watching, the trailers don't get the tone of the movie across too well. I was expecting something totally different and was very pleasantly surprised. Do yourselves a favor and go out and see the movie. Also, the apes don't take over the planet in the movie. The scale is a good deal smaller. I don't want to spoil anything, just watch and see.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Holy shit, what an awesome movie. Also, I greatly appreciate that they're starting to put the after-credits sequences smack dab in the middle of the credits. That was a vital plot point just thrown in the end! TheFlyingGerbil
I just watched Connie and Carla and while I'm sure critically it wasn't a masterpiece I had a stupid grin on my face the whole time. chikapow!
staySICK
Your Highness was... wow. Hilarious, but slightly off what I expected. Really enjoyed it though.
MasterDex
Ok, going all Asian Cinema and erotic here. It's Hong Kong Cinema at its comedy best - Sex and Zen. It's a raunchy, nudity and sex-filled, hilarious yet serious tale that I find hard to even describe in words. It's a remake of a '90s film of the same name but whatever about that, this one was brilliant. The best I can come up with to describe it is: "Remember Hot Shots? Yeah, like that but with the Asian twist." Oh yeah and it features the beautiful Saori Hara too... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycqk16UrYWI Edited August 14, 2011 by MasterDex
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
How was the 3D?
MasterDex
Sadly, I didn't have that privilege. Edited August 14, 2011 by MasterDex
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
That's a shame. I'd imagine curiosity alone would sell plenty of 3D tickets for the movie.
Mr W Phallus
Watched Harry Potter 6, 2 and 5 last night. Followed by the Usual Suspects for some reason. Then Harry Potter 4 today. (With friends I'm not that sad cool). It's amazing how much the films (obviously I'm just talking about the Harry Potters here) swing from genuine brilliance to appalling crapness, but despite it not always being intentional on the film-makers' part I really struggle to think of any films that entertain more, or make me laugh as much as the Harry Potter series. toxicitizen
Watched Priest tonight. Went in not really expecting much, but I really enjoyed it. It's unarguably fucking stupid, but it was right up my alley. I also quite liked the mix of sci-fi and western aesthetics. I don't think it did too well, though, so I doubt a sequel is on the cards. But the credits did say it was based on a graphic novel, so I think I'll look that up
deanb
My sister was in town so we and one of her friends went to go watch Captain America. My sister sucks are reading film listings so we watched Planet of the Apes instead. Was pretty good. I didn't mind for the spoiler posted the other day but I could tell what was coming up when that moment happened. Didn't really destroy the mood or anything. It was pretty good, the trailers gave me low hopes, but your lots reviews raised my expectations and it delivered. Also I must have missed you guys mentioning Rodney McKay was in it. So yeah I'll join in on folks saying you should go watch it.
BrainHurtBoy...2
Fright Night. This summer wasn't a good one for movies, but it ended on a high note with The Devil's Double, Another Earth, Attack the Block, RotPotA and Fright Night. Fright Night wasn't camp for the sake of camp. In fact, despite what the trailers might lead you to believe, there was little camp at all. The love interest was fairly boring, but attractive, but that was about the only weak link in the movie. It's paced very frantically, but it's pulled off excellently. Colin Farrell is an absolutely brilliant casting choice, and he plays the antagonist (Jerry the Vampire) to perfection. David Tennant stole the show in this movie, but I don't need to tell you how great he was. He had a really great interplay with the lead, Anton Yelchin, who was Chekov in Trek 09 and was the titular lead in Charlie Bartlett. All in all, slick, polished movie that doesn't try to do too much and succeeds because of it. A really, really fun movie to go and see. I highly recommend it. toxicitizen
I'm a bit surprised to be posting this here instead of the crap movies thread, but I watched Sucker Punch tonight and, unlike what seems to be everyone on the whole damn internet, I did not hate it at all. I kept waiting for it to start sucking but it never did. I guess I can understand how the unusual mash-up of styles could be too much for some people, but that's what I loved most about it. At first I thought it kinda worked against the movie how disconnected with everything else the action sequences were. I mean, how are you supposed to care about what's going on on-screen when there is literally zero context for it? But as the movie went on I realized that what's brilliant about it is that there is no need for context because those scenes are freaking fantasies. Day-dreams. So being visually engaging and stunning to look at is really all they needed to work. Say what you will about his movies, but Snyder is a talented filmmaker. The movie is visually stunning and has more style than anything I've seen in a very long time. The music was a bit distracting whenever I recognized a song, but it really fit the mood and style of the movie and if you buy into the premise you stop noticing it after a while. When I first saw the trailers for it, it seemed like a movie I'd enjoy the hell out of. And now that I've finally seen it, I don't know why I ever let anyone's opinion make me feel otherwise. edit: Oh, I also watched Boondock Saints II last night. It's...well, it's Boondock Saints. There's really not a whole lot else to say about it. It's pretty much more of the same, and that was good enough for me. Mr W Phallus
FLD, your description of Sucker Punch just makes me think of the The Fall, except the fantasy story sequences in that actually have context to the rest of the movie, it sacrifices no substance for style, the score is perfect and best of there's only on sequence, as far as I can tell, that makes use of CGI (and subtly) yet it looks more fantastical than any other movie I can think of off the top of my head. Not trying to shit over your enjoyment of Sucker Punch, you just made me of The Fall and any excuse to get more people to watch such an amazing film. Edit: Am I being an idiot? I can't find the embed video option and it's not doing it automatically like it used to.
toxicitizen
Not trying to shit over your enjoyment of Sucker Punch, you just made me of The Fall and any excuse to get more people to watch such an amazing film. Not at all. That looks very interesting and I'd never heard of it, so I'm glad you brought it up. Heh, now I kinda feel like elaborating on Sucker Punch but I was already trying not to write a damn wall of text review last night so I'll just leave it at what I've already said
Hocking
I too watched Sucker Punch recently and loved it. The opening to the film was excellent, helped largely by the song I think. It lost me slightly not long after the opening events, what with the sudden change - but when I cottoned on I thoroughly it. I didn't like the ending though. Sure, sacrificing herself so the other girl could escape was an interesting twist, but I thought the spike to the brain was a bit defeatist. CorgiShinobi
Seven Samurai! I mean, I've watched Bug's Life and Samurai 7, so might as well see the inspiration for the two. It's 3 hours and 37 minutes long, but there are hardly moments where it lags, though you'll definitely find moments where they could have cut time. I want to go into it, but it would be a lot of spoilers like how some people die and etc. I will say, the line (to summarize) "The victory goes to the farmers" works in context to this film. In the anime Samurai 7, eh, no. The samurai in that anime have taken down a capital space ship while blowing up mecha samurai and all kinds of manner of awesome. The farmers helped defend their village once, while merely providing some support in the finale. I'm probably sounding vague, but basically Sanbei (the leader) said he has always been on the losing side. At the end he claims that he and his other samurai friend have lost again whilst "the victory goes to the farmers."
toxicitizen
Finally watched The Social Network tonight. I thought it was excellent. I'll have to grab the bluray at some point.
CorgiShinobi
Seriously, my (now) old roommates thought the movie was terrible. I want to say I'm surprised, but when we were at a Redbox, the movies they wanted to pick out affirmed my suspicion in their "taste." Anyway, I thought it was really good and I didn't see it until it was out on store shelves. I didn't buy it even as I watched it with friends.
