toxicitizen
Finally watched Thor last night. It was very enjoyable, though it kinda bugged me a bit that basically nothing happens in it. I mean, there is very little story to speak of beyond Thor's character arc. It can basically be summed up as Thor's field trip to Earth as a mortal during which he learns humility. Though I did enjoy the cameo about halfway through (not Stan lee's...) It does work as an introduction to the character and set up for The Avengers, though. But other superhero movies like the first two Spider-Man, the first two X-Men and even the Iron Man series felt like they had so much more going on in them. I like what Marvel are doing with their movie continuity, but I feel like this movie was nothing more than a stepping stone to Avengers instead of its own thing that also leads up to it. Hopefully Captain American doesn't suffer from this as much. Edited September 4, 2011 by FLD
CorgiShinobi
Captain America has a better story because, yeah, Thor is like what you said: an introduction leading to the Avengers. It's still pretty good, but you're basically receiving a synopsis of Thor & Co.
Hot Heart
Just finished watching 'Four Lions' on TV. Great film. Couldn't ask for a better writing team than Chris Morris, Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong (with Simon Blackwell) too. Tough job to make a comedy about suicide bombers. toxicitizen
Watched X-Men: First Class tonight. Holy. Shit. I can't get over how insanely fucking GOOD it is! I thought that the first two Spider-Man and X-Men movies were good, but they just don't compare to First Class. I also used to think that Nolan's batfilms were in a class of their own. But I believe First Class ranks just as high. I almost wish it was a reboot rather than a prequel so they could build a new X-Men movieverse from it. Though I did get a good laugh out of the Wolverine cameo. Rebecca Romijn's was a nice touch, too. . Oh and fuck Ian McKellen. Michael Fassbender IS Magneto. He just nails it. I'm amazed they got away with that. It aired on Channel 4, who own Film 4, the company that helped fund the film. As for X-min first Class, yeah it's pretty damn awesome. I'm unsure if I'd say it's on-par with Nolans batman, but I do agree it has the feeling of being more "real" which would be why I think the Nolan batmans stand out. They feel like proper films, as opposed to comic book, and all the baggage that comes with that, being turned into a film. It aired on Channel 4. They run Film4, one of the companies that funded the film.
toxicitizen
Another evening, another Marvel movie. The Incredible Hulk, this time. Don't know why I took so long to watch it, but it was pretty good. Was it supposed to be a reboot, though? It seems to pick up where Ang Lee's Hulk left off with Banner on the run in south america. Kind of annoying that they've recast Banner for Avengers, though, as this one is clearly meant to be a part of the same continuity. Strangelove
You can blame Edward Norton for the recast...ugh.
CorgiShinobi
The Goonies. Don't stone me, but this was the first time I've seen it all in one sitting. I've always seen the second half, but never the first half. Just my luck I guess. The only negative thing I can think of is the main character's dialogue with One-Eyed Willy. Okay kid, you have asthma, but I don't think that makes you that similar to a one-eyed pirate. Oh, I guess his hero worship of the pirate is also a little silly, and the fact they could have tracked down the damn ship to, you know, get more treasure to better improve the town from the jerks who wanted to lay waste to it. Those are minor, but I mean c'mon... "Thanks Willy, I guess we're not that different."
TheFlyingGerbil
I just watched Orphans of the Storm. At 3 hours long I nearly didn't bother but I'm glad I did. It was enjoyable and I love the acting in silent movies. I should watch some more of them but I'd have no clue where to start.

Sounds more like Battra's area of expertise, but two clichés to get you started would be Metropolis and The General. I haven't seen the former and it's a long time since I've seen the latter, but you can't really go wrong with those two. Make sure you look out for the recent restoration of Metropolis, because they recently rediscovered an original print of the film which had a lot of scenes that had previously been lost. Mr W Phallus
Final Destination 5. I've never cringed so much in my entire life. The laser eye surgery scene was the first time I've ever had to cover my face with my hand an peek through the cracks whilst watching a film. It was glorious. The laser eye surgery scene was the first time I've ever had to cover my face with my hand an peek through the cracks whilst watching a film. It was glorious. The only scene that ever made me sick was the very first Jackass movie. The paper cut thing made me vomit all over. Funny, that. I watch a movie like Antichrist and my biggest reaction was "Wow, I really feel bad for Willem Defoe. Wow, I really feel bad for this woman!" I watch a bunch of idiots give each other papercuts and I want to dig my eyes out of my skull.
CorgiShinobi
Kung Fu Hustle I thought there would be more humor, but it surprised me with how much action was actually present. It's a movie that realizes it's going to be using a lot of effects, and so the effects are in your face. The whole idea of hidden Kung Fu masters, an awkward anti-hero turn messiah, not to mention the weapons.

Mr W Phallus
Final Destination 5. I've never cringed so much in my entire life. I watch a bunch of idiots give each other papercuts and I want to dig my eyes out of my skull. Yeh it's quite often the little things that you can actually imagine happening to you that get you the most - one of the scenes in Final Destination 5 involves a little screw on a balance beam, which is a lot worse than some of the more over the top moments because it can so easily happen to you. Having said that the actual gore wasn't a problem for me at all - it's the tension that precedes the gore. The moment I covered my eyes was during the laser eye surgery scene. I'm fairly squeamish about eyes, so I was squirming in my seat and peeking through my fingers, waiting for the inevitable eye mutilation, anticipating something like that scene from Un Chien Andalou. The first thing I said, as soon as the gore moment happened was 'Oh that's actually not that bad'. Same with the screw moment, the build up is what gets you, as the acrobat keeps missing the screw by a few millimetres. In Antichrist the gore is mostly unanticipated and sudden, so you don't have time to build it up in your mind as worse than it actually ends up being. Final Destination 5. I've never cringed so much in my entire life. The laser eye surgery scene was the first time I've ever had to cover my face with my hand an peek through the cracks whilst watching a film. It was glorious. My mum n sister watched it last week. Said it was hilarious. Especially the one who bends in two. Oh it is hilarious, it just does a brilliant job of building up a fuck load of tension before the actual gory punchline. CorgiShinobi
The Dark Crystal I saw it once as a young child, not being bothered by it too much. Now as an adult, there's a lot of surrealism to where I question if I've received a contact high. Also... TRIAL BY STONE!
Mal
Ip Man Top notch fight scenes, which is why I came to watch this movie. Story... it is good but some of the stuff just feels off. I think this could be this generation's Last Hero in China/Once Upon a Time in China for tons of folks. Personally... I prefer the older stuff. Might have to do with the story. I might come to terms with it. Now onto Ip Man 2! I hope it doesn't disappoint!
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Pulp Fiction. Again. God, what an awesome movie. I was watching it with a group of people. After the movie, one of them came up to me in private and said it was awkward for them because one of the people watching was black, and they didn't know if it was okay to laugh at Quentin Tarantino using the word "nigger". Of course it's okay to laugh, because it's a funny moment! The black guy was laughing, too, so I didn't know what his problem was. These days, people are so uptight about race relations, even when they're listening to rap songs that say "nigger" 50 times in 3 minutes. If people didn't act so offended with someone said it, the word would become powerless, and that would be a good thing.
Mr W Phallus
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. Not quite up there with the best of Ghibli, but really good none the less. toxicitizen
Watched Let Me In last night. Kinda felt like an asshole for watching the american remake instead of the original, but it was easier to find :/ I thought it was excellent. I especially liked how the girl's vampire side is shown to be this vicious and bloodthirsty predator yet most of the time you just want to hug her and comfort her. They're pretty much the same thing, so you really didn't miss out on much. The biggest change is the time period; while the original is set in modern times, the American remake is in the 70s/80s.
