Mal
Ip Man 2 I liked this ending fight a lot more than the one in Ip Man 1. Main reason was that he didn't take the boxer out directly. He played smart at the end to incorporated the hard and fierce style of Hung Ga to take out his joints, thus his tendons. Tendons, once they are down, they are down for far longer than muscles. Another thing is that it showed a better mix of niceness of a human being on the antagonist side too. toxicitizen
Watched Attack the Block and the original 1985 version of Fright Night a few days ago. I'd heard great things about Attack the Block but didn't really know what to expect. Overall I thought it was pretty great, though it was more of a monster movie than I thought it would be. As for Fright Night, I kept hearing the remake with Colin Farrell was good but not quite as good as the original, so I got curious. It didn't exactly blow me away, but I really enjoyed how it was kind of a more old school horror movie, like I used to watch as a kid. They just don't make horror movies like that anymore Edited September 20, 2011 by FLD
MasterDex
Watched The Guard the other night. Fantastic movie. Ireland's Lethal Weapon.
CorgiShinobi
X-Men: First Class It's a really really good movie, but I wouldn't consider it the best superhero movie. I know there are people who want a certain "cheesy" element to their comic book movies, but I don't particularly care for the "lolwut" moments. I think it's mainly because I feel like the movie was trying to show off its different special effects. I can't blame them when your cast is filled with powerful mutants, but a little self control can go a long way. Also, I couldn't help but feel like there was some subtle fan service. Not the "oh, that's a reference;" I mean the abundance of half-naked women. Well, not so much that but Raven/Mystique pretty much being in heat the entire film. Gets a needle in her arm and wants to make out that instant. But seriously, I would say it's in my Top 10 of superhero films.
deanb
Keep in mind she's been pretty much kept as a pet sister by Xavier. This is her first time around fellow mutants so she doesn't have to care as much about her mutations side-effects.
Hot Heart
Watched The Guard the other night. Fantastic movie. Ireland's Lethal Weapon. Really want to see that. Brendan Gleeson is a legend. I believe the film was written by the brother of the guy who did In Bruges or something like that too. Strangelove
First Class had this strange tendency to every 5 minutes remind you its a summer blockbuster by throwing some random cg effect, half naked chick or cheesy comic book line in its great acting. Its still a really good movie, but it brings it down a notch for me.
CorgiShinobi
Keep in mind she's been pretty much kept as a pet sister by Xavier. This is her first time around fellow mutants so she doesn't have to care as much about her mutations side-effects. Yeah, but she really became straightforward once she was around other mutant men. After she decided to stop giving Hank/Beast a chubby every five minutes, she got naked in Erik's/Magneto's bed. Oh, and then decided on being naked in front of Xavier. That whole thing with Xavier too. In the beginning Raven's talking about "would you date me" and before that she became jealous of the girl receiving Xavier's attention at the bar. It makes some sense given how long they've known each other, and he had been the only other mutant in her life. Though, fast forward to the naked bit I talked about and it seemed like Raven was making a subtle statement on how Xavier didn't "love" her. Battra92
Last night I watched the new Blu-Ray version of Dumbo. I forgot how depressing the film is at times. Also, I forgot that Dumbo doesn't fly until the last 5 minutes of the movie! Still, it's a good movie. I also find it funny that Disney has no problem with Dumbo (including the character Jim Crow - I am not kidding, that's his official name) yet Song of the South is forever banned. Also, Disney animators were probably on something when they did this sequence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=944cPciN-kw
Hocking
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Excellent twists in there and the amazing score by Hans Zimmer really highlighted the action.
Mister Jack
I saw Rio. It's hardly a masterpiece and the story was predictable, but it was still cute and fairly enjoyable. It was good enough to go here instead of the "okay" movies thread, at any rate.
Hot Heart
Harry Brown. It's not spectacular but it has some good moments and a sort of conflicted ending. Pretty brutal in some bits, and it sort of demonises some of the characters a little too much in some respects.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Yeah, I thought Harry Brown was well-done. The ending, however, is a little forced.
toxicitizen
Green Lantern. Most of the criticism I had heard is valid. And it's certainly no Batman Begins. But shit, I liked it a lot. And although I only started reading the comics shortly before the movie came out, I think I've read enough of them to call myself a fan. FMW
I just watched "The Seventh Seal". It's very literary, but not very fun. Unfortunately I was in the mood for fun when I watched it. I think I'll appreciate it much more after reading some analysis of it.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Oh my god. One of my favorite films. Watch it when you're not in the mood for fun but in the mood for thought,
Thursday Next
Saw Drive last Wednesday. Liked the film, great soundtrack, well shot. The guy who played the mobster (not Ron Perlman) reminded me of Colm Meaney, with a bit of Gene Hackman thrown in. I think the Driver died at the end, my mate wasn't so sure, but my mate was annoyed that Inception didn't show the totem fall over and felt that Hanna didn't explain enough... he doesn't really "get" films. He's more into the comic book blockbusters. Edited October 10, 2011 by Thursday Next
TheFlyingGerbil
They had an Ingmar Bergman season last year over here and I watched a few of his films but didn't really enjoy any of them. I guess he's not for me. I watched Grave of The Fireflies just now. It was sweet and sad, but it was interesting to see a Japanese film set during WWII. Mercurial
Just saw The Thing prequel. If you're easily scared you probably will be, but if you're not it's pretty suspenseful and you know the fucking ending cause it's a damn prequel. Still it's worth a movie ticket to see at least once.
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Saw Love Actually. It was quite the enjoyable romantic comedy! Plenty of great British actors, and Bill Nighy amuses as always, but it was nice to see Alan Rickman step out of the slick mastermind role and play something of a charming, bumbling fool. Also, Colin Farrell's interaction with the foreign girl is irresistibly cute. Thanks for the recommendation, Frosted!
deanb
Supposedly Alan Rickman loves to land roles as the good guy in white, but obviously he get's type cast quite a bit. I'm not much for chic flicks but I am quite a fan of Love Actually. I'm more fan of Richard Curtis' TV stuff (Blackadder, Mr Bean, etc) but I do want to see Boat that Rocked at some point ("Pirate Radio" in the US). My main issue with his films are he has an awful lot of Hugh Grant in it and he is a double edged sword. 1. He is probably the main reason why a british accent can supposedly get you in a US girls knickers. On the other hand 2. He set a stupidly high standard for us British guys abroad cos Hugh Grant isn't real.
