Men in Black 1. As I tweeted the effects haven't stood up too well, just the wrong side of CGI changeover. The straight man Jones and joker Smith works so well. The story is simple, it paces well, though is much shorter than I remember it being.

Now to watch MIB 2, wonder where that'll end after these years.

Watched the first Starship Troopers with a friend the other night. Had been a solid 10 years since I'd last seen it.

I used to like it a lot when I was younger, but holy shit this was a fucking blast to rewatch. Haven't laughed that hard in a while. Most of the satire went right over my head as a kid, so it felt like a completely different movie.

Also watched REC2. I really loved the spanish original, so I'd actually been looking forward to seeing it. Just kinda forgot about it for a while.

It's sadly not as great as the original, but still worth a look if you like found footage films.

Personally, the movie sort of lost me early on when they reveal that

the zombies aren't zombies, the virus is actually a demonic possession and the health expert accompanying the SWAT team is, in fact, a priest. That felt like it came outta fucking nowhere and came across as kind of ridiculous. I kept watching, though, and the movie had some cool moments, so overall it's still enjoyable. Just seemed a bit weird that they would

But then I looked up the original on wiki afterwards, and apparently the whole religious angle is in it, at the very end. So, my guess is either it was very understated and lost in translation (I usually watch foreign films with subs), or for some reason I completely forgot about that detail...

Addams Family. Another that holds up well (Thing surprisingly well). And I get to watch Values next. Didn't remember the blonde lass being in the first film though. "MALIBU Barbie" The deadpan delivery, the complete obliviousness to social norms.

Raul Julia was good in just about everything he did. His real masterpiece was the obscure "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank."

Love Actually. Alongside Die Hard one of my top xmas-films-that-aren't-exactly-xmas films. Also one of the few "chick flicks" I'm up for watching.

The cast is great, and despite having like 8 interwoven plots it holds together rather well. Some of it is a bit sentimental, but it can't be passed over. The film is about 8 years old now, quite interesting to see where everyone ended up. (for example getting the real PM in bother, being the hobbit, the king, killed by a snake)

"listen kids, don't buy drugs. Become a pop star and they given them you for free!!"

Sherlock Holmes Game of Shadows. Benedict Cumberbatch is still best one, but it was alright. The ending was pretty simplistic though, there's a scene near the end where you basically go "oh, that's how it'll work out". Oh for Moriarty I was kicking myself throughout cos I recognised the actor but couldn't place him. Mr Smith from Fringe, so he was pretty good for the part (Moriarty was where I disliked the TV Sherlock). Stephen Fry was quite fun. Stephen Fry was also mostly nekkid for part of it :P

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Exceeded every one of my expectations. Fincher made it his own, and the result was absolutely brilliant. The acting, cinematography, and score... the score was mind-blowing.

I hope someone rips that intro bit to YouTube soon. I kind of want to watch it over and over again.

Dragon Tattoo.

It was decent. Better than average. The intro was really something.

As for acting, I think Mara>Rapace as Lisbeth, but Craig<Nyqvist as Blomkvist.

Cinematography wasn't obtrusive. It provided a good framework. Serviceable.

The score was fantastic. FANTASTIC. Like, really good.

All in all? A bit worse than the Swedish version, though not by that much.

It's a Hollywood movie, you know? There's some baggage that comes with that, and even though the result CAN be fantastic, in many ways it damages adaptations.

I quite honestly expected a bit more from Fincher. This was better than The Game, Ben Button and Zodiac, but none of his others.

I'd recommend you go see it.

Also saw Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows.

It was good, too, but know what to expect going in. There are plenty of fights and explosions.

Strange homosexual overtones, as well. It didn't really bother me, though.

Dunno if I'd recommend it, but it's good.

The Muppets was fantastic, though I don't need to talk about that.

The Descendants was GREAT. Third favorite of the year after Tree of Life and Drive. Excellent movie in almost every way. Great setting, beautiful shots, fantastic script, multifaceted characters.

If you were to watch five movies from this year, I'd say

Tree of Life

Drive

The Descendants

The Trip

X-Men: First Class

In that order.

The Trip is on Netflix Instant, by the by.

Since the year's over now I'll recommend a few films that I enjoyed this year.

Arirang (Not the Korean TV but the Kim Ki duk film. Full Disclosure: One of my close friends has worked on this film but I liked it even outside of that).

Midnight in Paris (It's a love/hate thing but the film had some strong performances here and there).

Drive (I'm sure those who have seen can say it's a slick film)

Take Shelter (it's not what you'd think and not everyone can appreciate it unfortunately but Michael Shannon's portrayal was excellent)

Hanna (mostly cause of the music)

50/50 (good film to go on a date with)

While the girl with a dragon tattoo was good cinema I have issues with the story but the film was good.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Cumberbatch was pretty good in it as well and decent performances throughout but it's old school suspense so it takes a while to sink in)

A Dangerous Method was pretty decent to be honest.

The Artist is actually excellent cinema. In fact if there's a film I would recommend watching this year it's that.

If you do like Almodovar The Skin I live in is the usual type.

There's a few more but I'll recommend them when it's closer to release but most of these have already been released.

I Love You, Phillip Morris.

Well-made film, based on a true story. It's fairly funny, usually based on ridiculous circumstances, and has some good performances. For example, the two men are trying to have a romantic dance after 'lights out' while sharing a cell in prison, with Phillip having handed a CD to a guy in the next cell over with a CD player, who promises to play the whole song ("My word is my motherfucking bond!"). You see the two dancing peacefully, while you can hear the other inmate shouting and swearing at the prison guards telling him to turn it off, who eventually charge in and start fighting with him.
