deanb
hey guys Avengers discussion question Anybody else in here think Coulson is not dead? Not only were the cards not in his pocket, but Nick Fury needed to motivate the Avengers and has lied to them plenty of times before. In fact he could've easily lied here too I was chatting to my buddy about the same thing. I think they left it open ended enough that a decent internet campaign could see him brought back, not sure how I would feel about that. I liked Coulson and was sad to see him die, but it seems wrong to do that and then take it back. It would mean watching Avengers Assemble in the future would be tainted with the knowledge that the pivotal unifying moment was a cheap trick, it would be like if Wash's death was faked in Serenity, that scene would lose all the impact of the senseless loss. I think the significance of the blood stained cards was that death feels more real when you have a prop and a mouldering corpse is inconvenient to transport and harder to throw on a table. I agree. While it'd be nice to have him back(though I've a feeling this is an actors decision), and it's a comic book world so chances are there's something they could do to bring him back, it'd cheapen the whole thing and the "he wasn't dead all along/we have a device to bring him back/this was the fake coulson" is one of the worst comic book clichés and I'm sure Whedon would have been glad to drop it.
Hot Heart
LMD Coulson! I actually found it funny that Whedon threw in a little nod to that concept (even if I only discovered it in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance II and am not a fan of it). excel_excel
Saw Avengers on Sunday, holy shit, what a fantastic film. Thrilling, entertaining, funny, perfect summer blockbuster but deep enough for hardcore fans to enjoy. Fantastic performances, never runs out of steam....Joss Whedon done good. What an utter triumph. Comparing this to the Transformers series.... one of them is genuinely funny without resorting to stupid racial and toilet humour to get a laugh, entertaining with a focus on the characters that the film is supposed to be about, and actually elicits emotions from people. The other is Transformers.
Waldorf and Statler
the reason I mentioned Coulson is because of the fact he still has more movie deals and recently has been talking about filming more movies in the universe.... sooooo
excel_excel
the reason I mentioned Coulson is because of the fact he still has more movie deals and recently has been talking about filming more movies in the universe.... sooooo That could be origin films though, like Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Fury films. Personally I think Fury's reaction to Coulson dying, the way he steps back in shock and sadness and grips the railing means that it was a real death. Or maybe Coulson faked it who knows Edited May 8, 2012 by excel_excel
Hot Heart
In the Empire interview, to paraphrase, he says, "There's a clamour for a Coulson movie - mostly from me." And it all seems like a bit of a misdirect if you haven't seen the film...
CorgiShinobi
"I don't know what you mean" mind games Bruce tries to play on Morgan Freeman's character just for it to backfire because the dude's not an idiot. I never got the sense he was playing mind games. It was always coy and knowing discussions between them, probably with an air of 'plausible deniability' thrown in. More accurate, but it's still a kind of "Nah, I'm just taking a gander at the inventory" where Bruce doesn't think he'll quite get it. Then he does and Bruce is like, "Oh, what now?" Then again, the fourth time I watched it was a few years ago. I have made attempts to watch it a complete fifth time, but I always lose interest around when Bruce is returning home. Not taking a jab at the movie, just I haven't been able to watch it as much as The Dark Knight. Even when you know what's going to happen, like Batman won't run over Joker, or such-and-such dies, it's still a thrill to watch. Faiblesse Des Sens
That's one of my problems with TDK. I felt like so much "thrilling" stuff was thrown in that it felt forced. Especially considering how long the movie goes on and on for.
Johnny
I saw Iron Sky and I thought it was hilarious. Judging by the crowd in the cinema, though, it was very hit and miss. You had the same groups of people laughing at every gag while half the cinema stayed quiet for the entirety of it all.
CorgiShinobi
I saw the Avengers. It's great and I know I'll get it on Blu-ray. I have only one friend who thought it was terrible, but I think he hasn't quite grasp that Marvel movies have both serious and humorous direction. If Hulk did something funny, it doesn't cheapen the character, it makes him deeper than a one-dimensional anger management character. I could go on, but it seems we all know it was good for what it was aiming to be. I did see some editing errors, like a scene where Tony Stark didn't have lights glowing through his shirt. Still, it was great and the only thing I would personally complain about is Hawkeye. That's because I don't care for the character, no matter how "cool" they try to make him. Though I do agree with how they make him... an antagonist in the first half. I mean, he is the least seen of all the Avengers so I don't think you could get a lot of people to care about some dude hanging around Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man. Pulling a bow in Thor just doesn't add enough value to the character. Favorite parts: Everything with Tony Stark "Puny god" And Dean, that bit with the guy... playing Galaga, it's suppose to be a joke about how while everyone is hard at work, there's this dude in the corner playing a game on his computer thinking no one sees him goofing off. He's like a guy on his office computer playing solitaire.

TheMightyEthan
Pretty sure it's just a dumb joke, nothing more to it.
Strangelove
How is it terrible? Its a joke. Not a great one, but people laughed at the theatre I was at. I dunno. I didnt think it was funny enough to audibly laugh, but I smiled. Ive personally never worked in an office sitting down in front of a computer all day, maybe thats why I and many others thought it was funny. Im personally always jealous of people who have jobs where they can be online or playing games while working. You cant do that with most lines of work. deanb
Well it was just rather pointless. At the time I figured (since I'm not like a massive purveyor of Whedons work) that it was some inside joke/reference I didn't get. It just seemed oddly specific to mention that someone is playing games, and that it's specifically Galaga, and then before leaving that scene to have a flash of the guy actually playing it. It adds zilch to the scene or movie. It's as Ethan says "a dumb joke".
TheMightyEthan
I thought the shot of the dude actually playing it was dumb and pointless, but I lol'd for the first part when Stark just suddenly points and goes "That man is playing Galaga!" Strangelove
I was confused by it because it was Galaga. It took me a second to think it over. Who play Galaga while at work? Thats not the stereotypical game people play at work. If it was farmville or Solitaire id have gotten it right off the bat. THATS what the joke did bad to me. Then again, maybe it was galaga cus they were in a spaceship type thing. I dunno.
TheMightyEthan
Maybe it wasn't in the script, RDJ just did it randomly, and Galaga was the game he happened to yell out. *Edit* - I don't have any reason to believe that's the case though, just hypothesizing. But I agree that Galaga seemed like a weird choice. Edited May 13, 2012 by TheMightyEthan
Strangelove
Is there even a pc port or web browser Galaga?! I sense something bigger here. brb gonna make my own website about this pointless thing in this movie
deanb
See a casual remark of "That dudes on solitaire" would be an obvious (though unneeded) "oh goofing off at work" joke. But a "That dude is playing galaga" CUT TO man playing Galaga" seems like there's something extra to it and it kinda sucks when that isn't the case. Galaga isn't exactly a well known game. Never mind something you'd be playing randomly at work.
Strangelove
It's incorrect(she joined SHIELD, not the Avengers), but I still think it's funny.
Mister Jack
Galaga is a funny word.
CorgiShinobi
Galaga is actually pretty well known, even if someone can't quite recall the game's name. Heck, even my father knows what Galaga is, and there are "versions" of Galaga you can play on your computer. I use to play Pac-Man, Galaga, and a few other arcade titles during middle school and high school in the computer lab when it was suppose to be "research" for a paper. It's one of those silly jokes where you'll chuckle if you can relate, either from you personally goofing off at work or knowing others do it when they think no one can see. Stark addresses everyone, specifically Galaga dude since he must obviously have the time to listen (you know, he's goofing off) Big dialogue goes on All the character name people leave and the crew gets back to work Galaga dude goes back to Galaga It's that simple and it got chuckles all around the theater I was in. I even smiled at it.
Waldorf and Statler
Yeah that Galaga dude did not give a FUCK. Last two good movies I saw: Aliens, and God Bless America. Aliens is obvious, but God Bless America was a nice surprise. It had similar cynical humor to South Park and GTA's radio stations. Basically a revenge fantasy if you have ever wanted to murder those stupid annoying people from TV shows [usually from shit like MTV and VH1]. It's good if you're a cynical person and can laugh at some of the more ridiculous shit in the movie. It might not be good if you're not like that. TheRevanchist
I am not generally a fan of horror, as it gets so predictable and boring. Plus, they all start to use the same camera tricks. But, there is a movie I am watching right now. The movie is called Victim. It's from 1999. The movie is in subtitles, which only a good movie can pull off. I do not want to spoil one lovely note about this movie, as this one gave me goosebumps and chills. Worth checking out!
TheFlyingGerbil
Doesn't reading the subtitles spoil the tension?
