TheMightyEthan
I watched [Rec] with subtitles and didn't think it spoiled the tension.

TheFlyingGerbil
Doesn't reading the subtitles spoil the tension? ...what? Sometimes reading subtitles can take me out of the film experience, I guess that may have more of an effect in horror films where a lot of the experience is visual so may be affected with massive white text flashing up on the screen and that you may be reading when an appears on the screen. Faiblesse Des Sens
I've never had subtitles take me out of the film experience.
TheRevanchist
And it doesn't here either. This is visually a scary flim. The subtitles aren't overpowering on the screen, but the lettering was big enough to not be difficult to read. The dialogue was simple, as well. Nothing too cumbersome and over-writen (like the period pieces you might see on Sundance). But, if you have trouble with subtitles, then that might be a deal breaker. Each person has things they don't like. For me, I never liked watching Friends. Many people loved that show when it was on, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. Strangelove
My hearing is really messed up, so I tend to always use subtitles when I watch a movie at home. Same thing with games. Except games ALWAYS have to have subtitles. Otherwise Ill miss things.
TheMightyEthan
I usually find subtitles distracting for the first few minutes, but after that it's like they're not even there.
Johnny
I've seen subtitled films all my life due to living in Sweden and even though it's not that bad, I definitely prefer without. Subtitles kind of ruin the sense of timing because I don't read at precisely the speed the actors are saying something. I found the subs a bit distracting when watching Avengers and would definitely have gone to a showing without subs if that was an option. Hell, I would have paid extra to do so. That said, if I'm watching, say, an anime where the original japanese is better than the dub, I'll watch the original and deal with the annoyance of subtitles. I've found that varies from movies to movies. Obviously it is a big deal because unsynced subs fucking blow.
Mister Jack
I just watched Drive on netflix. It starts out slow but then out of nowhere it picks up and doesn't stop until the end.
Waldorf and Statler
drive was my 2011 favorite movie. It got me in the Ryan Gosling camp [though admittedly Crazy Stupid Love was as good as a chick flick can get]. Now he's appearing in a gangster movie and I am really looking forward to it. Watched Alien on my plane trip. My laptop's battery was enough for 3 hours and I used them on Alien. Very good choice. Didn't feel the four hour trip with this and A Feast for Crows. deanb
Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol. Simon Pegg seems a bit oddly placed, but he's good. The overall film is pretty neat. At the start it seems for every stage of a mission there's "an app for that", though the screen is pretty neat (giant Pegg corridor ). I liked the part where the subtitles translated themselves(At first I figured they'd leave them as is). The rest is all the usual Mission Impossible stuff, disguises, self destruct in 5 seconds stuff. If that's not for you then obviously MI4 isn't. One bit was super cheesy, but at least they acknowledged it later on.
Thursday Next
I don't know if I just notice product placement more these days or what, but MI:4 felt like a really expensive, very slick, BMW advert. Entertaining as hell, but the advertising seems to be really in your face these days. It was up there with I Robot.
CorgiShinobi
Speaking of, The Avengers had quite a bit of product placement much like the other Marvel movies, but most of it was done well. Even the Dr Pepper truck didn't stay on screen that long until it was blown up. HOWEVER, there was one scene that was ridiculous. Which one, and why? Remember when Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye crash land in New York City? There's a scene where they march around a single vehicle, that vehicle being a new Acura where the shot perfectly aligns with the logo on the trunk. You might say it seems a little in your face, but bearable. Yet, that was the entire shot. Even as an advertising student I found it poor. Still, it wasn't anywhere near as awful as anything from the Transformers movies. Edited May 22, 2012 by Atomsk88
Hot Heart
I didn't notice any of those things. What's wrong with me?
CorgiShinobi
I didn't notice any of those things. What's wrong with me? Nothing, you're normal. Considering how much product placement is a common factor in society, it's a normal occurrence to where we can believe that Tony Stark does drink Dr Pepper and he, along with Dr. Banner, would drive in an expensive Acura vehicle. deanb
John Carter of Mars. Pretty enjoyable. Good visuals. I think it was just sucky marketing that flopped it. The main issue is at the very end where it becomes a "what is happening? Why do you need the Spy Kid?". It doesn't retroactively impair the rest of the film, but I think the start and end could easily be cut off without changing the movie much. The who, what, why of the Thuams was never really explained either. @Hot Heart: I think it's cos we're British. They're not common brands so we're just kind of oblivious to it(I remember a while back there was something I thoguht was a brand in the US, turned out it was just a name they used for it.. can't remember what though, some food I think). Apparently Fringe is full of it, but apart from the NFC stuff I wasn't really aware of it.
TheMightyEthan
It was Stay Puft marshmallows. I tend to not notice product placement either unless it's really really hamfisted, which tends to either mean they go way out of their way to zoom in on the logo or it's stuff like the "vintage 2004" from I, Robot. Hot Heart
The Losers. It probably helps that I didn't go into expecting too much but it was good. I liked a few of the actors in it and they all did well. Chris Evans was pretty funny and Zoe Saldana was smokin' hot. I think some of the bad guy stuff was a bit 'misjudged', not so much the making-you-hate-him part but the corny element to it. Though those bits had some great moments and there was a lot of good interaction between the characters. Helped you forget the slightly weird plot. Yantelope V2
Apparently James Bond loves Heineken now. http://www.craveonline.com/film/articles/186885-daniel-craig-defends-product-placement-in-skyfall
Thursday Next
Then again, Bond has always been a product placement-fest. Dom Perignon, Omega watches, Aston Martins. They've been around since the 70's. Recently he's gone a bit more down market. (Driving a ford? Really?) but it's not a new thing. For some reason I don't mind it in Bond. Yantelope V2
Yeah, that's a great point. Being an icon of style it's kind of accepted. It's all about how obnoxious it is. It made sense for him to get a new car every time he wrecked the old one and they never inserted any annoying dialogue. It becomes obnoxious when like in a recent episode of Chuck "I brought BMTs from subway!" "From the fresh fit menu?" "Yep, I'm watching my weight!" *shudder I hope it's not like that in Bond "Martini sir?" "no, I drink Heineken!" *insert dashing smile and wink at the camera.
