CorgiShinobi
Hey, anyone else see Brave this weekend? You know, that new Pixar movie out now? It's good, really good, but just letting you know it's more of a mother-daughter movie than an adventure-quest type movie. Like, there aren't that many locations even with the fantastic scenic moments. You have a castle, a "stonehenge-like" place, a hut, and a destroyed castle. Felt weird because, well, I couldn't "connect" with the film since my father and I never had "mother-daughter" issues...
Mister Jack
I watched Battle Royale on Netflix. Real good movie, but it is depressing as hell.

I've heard the movie is good, just not up to the quality of every other existent Pixar film [i dare you to find a copy of Cars 2. Pixar had TOP. MEN. Get rid of the evidence] I want to watch it but if I watch it in Colombia I'll be forced to watch the spanish version. This sucks donkey dick

Strangelove
I haven't seen Brave, but if they really never outdo themselves after Wall-E/Up/Toy Story 3, I won't view it as a negative against Pixar as a whole. Most companies/can't even reach that kind of excellence, much less outdo it. They can release 100 shitty films right now and Id still love Pixar.
SomTervo
Watched The Girl Next Door again last night while chatting at a friends. Always forget how good that movie is. Ingenious for being produced and advertised to look like 'generic shitty chick-flick #xx' but when you actually watch it it's a fucking excellent story and a funny as shit movie. Love dat.

Love that film. I think it has its problems but I like that, in general, it values story over gags. And the cast are all really good. Plus, it has an amazing soundtrack. Also Elisha Cuthbert is hooooot.

SomTervo
That film has made like 10x what Moonrise Kingdom has made, and that makes me very very sad. On a side note. Attack the Block is on C4 Sunday night. It's a brilliant little film, definitely worth a watch if you get a chance. Shit, Moonrise Kingdom. Forgot to mention that. Fucking good stuff. @Strange: I can totally get that. And I think some of his films are better than others. They're kinda like Coen Bros style black comedies in that you should be laughing at how self-aware and stupid a lot of the stuff that goes on in them is. I first saw Royal Tenenbaums when I was a lot younger and my sense of humour wasn't totally developed, and I just didn't think anything of it. Seemed boring and unfunny. Then I saw some scenes of Steve Zissour years later, and it was fucking great; but this was well after I got into slacker comedies and anti-humour and things like that. Moonrise Kingdom particularly has a pretty good adventure and story in it. Painfully romantic too, so if anybody's got a date, that's the film to see. Really good stuff, except maybe two moments which don't make sense/ are a little too farfetched.

His films are never that funny, but they're never that meaningful either. I hate to say it, but "halfassed" would be about right. I think he's a good director though, He just chooses kind of empty skeletal scripts. Im just a fan of real dark humor(Eastbound and Down) or extremely witty humor(Arrested Development.) And as far as artsy stuff, I like colorful bombastic stuff(Fantasia) or really understated stuff(Antichrist). He never does any of those things very well. And that's what he tries to do. Which is sad because I think he has the talent to do it. As a whole though, Im over irony and sarcasm as comedic devices. Im over shaky or documentary style camera shots and im really done with the Royal Tenenbaums/AD rich eccentric white people schtick. It's been done to death. Him in particular. His stuff just isnt for me.

You have to switch off your brain a little, try not to analyse it too deep, because he never really goes for depth. Re: direction alone: Moonrise Kingdom is one of the best films I've seen for years and years. The title card and ending card sequences are just unbelievably excellent, and it even has thematic development evoked through certain camera techniques and quirks that he uses. It's awesome. Really warm and fulfilling. Very well edited, too. Edited June 25, 2012 by kenshi_ryden
Thorgi Duke of Frisbee
Agreed on Moonrise Kingdom. Brilliant stuff, except for the child acting. Then again, almost every movie ever has awful kid actors. It's a fact of life; you give a kid a decent script, and the little fucker will butcher it. Point-3
I love Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums is genius IMO) so Moonrise Kingdom is on this list. Movie opinions are so subjective and I'd go so far as to say that the audience you go with can make or break the entire experience. So, with that, Avengers = great, Snow White = meh, Prometheus = hmmm... as far as recent (in the theater) titles go.

pocoGRANDE
saw Moonrise Kingdom a few nights ago, and as a big fan of Wes Anderson's movies i gotta say this was yet another great one. however if you're not predisposed to like the guy, then i really don't see this being the movie to convince you (that'd be Fantastic Mr. Fox). i'll admit Anderson has some problems as a filmmaker, but what he always gets right (for me anyways) is the characters. they manage to be "real" to me while existing in that heightened reality his films like to use. Moonrise had some truly excellent performances across the board (maaybe not the kid actors, but realistically they could have been SO much worse). Ed Norton Bruce Willis and Frances McDormand all brought their A-game, and of course Bill Murray was a goddamn delight... you know what? as long as Wes Anderson keeps casting Bill Murray i don't think i'll ever stop seeing his movies.
Hot Heart
The Guard. Fantastic stuff. I love off-kilter films with smartarse dialogue, and Brendan Gleeson is amazing. Funny that it is by the brother of the director of In Bruges (and starring the aforementioned) because they are similar in tone, but The Guard is sort of...an Irish Western? Better too. Also great to see Tom from Father Ted.
Mister Jack
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. I should note that it wasn't great, but it was good enough for me to put it here instead of the OK movie thread, which to me would mean "meh," which isn't how I feel. I did enjoy it and I'm not sorry I saw it, but I don't see myself buying the dvd when it comes out.
Luftwaffles
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. What, really? How the hell can a movie about Abraham Lincoln hunting vampires be remotely good?
deanb
Paul. Watched with mum n her BF. I think some refrences were lost on them, but most comes through. Everyone understands dick jokes. I actually went in with low expectations, but it was a pretty fun film. Nice amount of "real sci-fi", some parody, some references(country band playing Kantina theme*, etc), and a bunch of jokes. Good fun film. *My n me mum laughed. BF didn't. He's never seen Star Wars...
TheRevanchist
He's never seen Star Wars... I don't know how to feel about that. Which reminds me, I need to start a Star Wars thread.
danielpholt
A friend of mine at work actually likes episodes 1-3 more than 4-6. In fact, i think he outright dislikes 4-6. Cant get my head around it myself, the only reasoning i can put to it, is that he just doesn't like older films. Maybe the image quality or cheesy script puts him off? Or maybe he just really like animated robots.
CorgiShinobi
For the longest time my father believed the prequels were better than the original because "the effects are better." I would also constantly facepalm during this time. Eventually I turned him around, I think after he had watched a few Spike "Star Wars Marathons."
Waldorf and Statler
Madagascar 3. I didn't expect much, and I ended up laughing. Even if it was in spanish. Surprisingly Circus Afro didn't ruin the movie.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Safety Not Guaranteed. A funny classified posting turned movie. It's a funny cute indie film about two interns and a writer looking for the guy who wrote the ad... and of course he turns out to be quite the character. It's a movie about motivations, really. It's barely sci-fi at all despite the time travelling premise.
