Last Good Movie You Saw

I honestly don't get why everyone's creaming themselves over Quicksilver.  Is there something outside the movies themselves that's causing it?

He's a new character, and he was a lot of fun for the brief time he was in the film; that's what I picked up anyway. I hope we see more of him in this universe.

Inside Llewyn Davis

My second viewing of this film and it still holds up. Will most likely end the year in my top 5 viewed films.

Another problem with DoFP is

it essentially makes The Wolverine utterly pointless and inconsequential. It's not like The Wolverine was a bad film, or even that old, it came out last summer. Hopefully Fox will do a better job going forward of keeping their X/FF films relevant to each other.

BDH: I keep meaning to watch that! Good to hear you enjoyed it.

To be fair they're not aiming for some MCU like super arc, and on top of that it's "The Wolverine" rather than "X-Men: Wolverine". I think it's meant to be standalone (beyond the post-credits)

As for Quicksilver, his apperance in pre-release media was pretty sucky looking. But it's not like they could put the whole scene (a decent chunk of his appearance in the film) up as a trailer since it'd spoil a huge highlight of the film.

Regarding Quicksilver, I absolutely hated the look of him in pre-release materials, so I was pleasantly surprised by his actual scenes in the movie.  Hell, I wish he had more screen time, although I can kind of understand why he didn't.  As far as the movies go, his power is kind of broken.

One Direction:  This Is Us.

I can't escape the reality that I am a 1D fan.  There is a bunch of PR stuff in the movie, but some meaningful moments with their families and time alone really shine.  This is a must for the fanbase.  Most of you probably don't fit in that category, but I am okay with that.

Already put Amazingly Astoundingly Awful Spider-Man 2 in the Crap Movie thread. The other three I've seen, go in here.

X-Men Days of Future Past

As I said before, I was cautiously pessimistic about this, and so went in with lowered expectations... which were met somewhat. I can't really fault the story as such, in that it's a nice premise and does do fairly good service towards its characters. Seeing that triangle between Charles, Erik and Mystique was good stuff. The Quicksilver scene was pretty dang awesome, too.

That said, while some of the action looked really cool (Blink's portals! Fully icy, skatey Iceman! FIRE!) it was pretty 'empty'. Lot of flash and no real heft or substance, just like earlier Singer ones where there's a lot of 'do your power now'. The better moments were definitely set in the past.

I think the main problem was X-position (lol!) was being carried so much by the original cast just to show them off. You were being told things twice, or they were breaking rules ("Wolverine, go convince my younger self... actually, I'll beam my thoughts into the past because you're a vessel/link more than an influential character"). And, if you think about it, they didn't exactly need Magneto. Or I mean, it was only written that way to emphasise the relationship.

1. He failed to stop an assassination... so let's bring him to stop this one?

2. Well, we need him because Charles doesn't have his powers and future Charles didn't actually give us much fucking detail about what happened. I know, let's break into the Pentagon. That sounds much easier than trying to prevent the assassination without him.

3. Let's break out Magneto. That'll do great things for human/mutant relations!

Don't get me wrong, who wouldn't want more Magneto? It just seems like perhaps the impetus from breaking him out could've come from Mystique and then go down that darker path instead of simply old Erik going, "Find me. I'm a massive jerk and will jeopardise everything AGAIN, but my younger self is played by Fassbender. He's a big star, don't ya know?" Problem is, it really would've required a lot of tweaking and you wouldn't get your Quicksilver sequence.

...which brings me onto the other thing I hate about Singer films: those stupid little winky references ("My mum knew a guy like that."). The other thing I dislike is how Singer can't really capture a feeling of time or place very well. It's the seventies, here's a lava lamp and some brown clothes. Here's Cerebro and now it looks like it's from the fucking future itself.

Anyway, there are plenty of plotholes and annoying little things and I never really feel like the film 'took off' at any point, but I liked the character conflict stuff so it was a good watch.

Edge of Tomorrow

I'm afraid, compared to X-Men, I don't have much to say. It's a fun watch. Seeing slimey coward Cruise turn into a hero is interesting, there's a fair amount of humour and some drama. Then they try and explain the science and stupid things happen, and you get a fairly underwhelming but serviceable third act. So, yeah, decent film with some good performances but nothing special.

22 Jump Street

Loved the first one and loved this one, too. Builds on the first one with a huge chunk of self awareness and they pretty much smash the fourth wall into tiny little pieces. If you like Community, you'll probably appreciate the willingness to go to absurd places as well as lovingly recreate tropes of yore even if it subverts some of them. The double act of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill is superb.

Fruitvale Station.

It's a fairly simplistic 're-telling' of the last day of the victim of the Fruitvale BART Station shooting (Oscar something - his name escapes me). It times you can see the director adding additional moments into the film, the scene with the dog especially; but it still works for people who weren't aware of this incident. It left me annoyed and a little distressed.

Certainly worth a watch, just don't expect a film that tells the story of this guys final day without taking a few liberties.

22 Jump Street

An amazingly funny sequel to a movie that was also really fucking funny. If you're a fan of the first, or of the Seth Rogen/James Franco gang films, definitely recommend this.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

Besides one issue I had with how fast they got over something, it was an amazing film. Great 3D, had a great running gag between 3 of the leads, and more fun adventures with dragons. Definitely Dreamworks' best stuff.

21 Jump Street

I pretty much avoided it because of the premise(movie based on an 80s tv show, Channing Tatum), but everyones always saying how good it was. It was really funny. Color me surprised. Though it made sense once I noticed who the people were who wrote and directed it.

Now I just gotta wait for 22 Jump Street to appear online.

World War Z. I dont get the hate. Its a decent zombie movie. must be a raging nerd thing.

Aye the hate's mostly because the novel's a really clever thing. Which got simmered into generic Hollywood work. It was written as a bunch of audio interviews, oral history and all that, how it affected random people across the globe in so many different cultures, and had a way more intricate and intelligent breakdown of how the world was affected. No 'cures' or 'masking agents' or anything, just people dealing with trauma and the brutal work of survival.

Then the movie's just like "it's Brad, Merica, travel, action, save his family, arbitrary 'save-all masking agent'", etc. Not terrible at all, just misses the point. And for the uninitiated, that's fine.

Grand Budapest Hotel was mine. Haven't managed to go to the flicks in weeks. I fucking LOVED that movie. Saw it twice. First Anderson movie which was actually genuinely laugh out loud funny all the way through.

I actually think WWZ turned out pretty damned well considering the trainwreck that was it's production. It's certainly not a bad film, and it's one I'll definitely re-visit at some point.

Re-Watched Back to the Future Part II last night. Such a great, light hearted fun movie. I want to say they don't make movies like this anymore, but I'm starting to think that trend is going to change.

Still nothing beats the ending where they pretty much spoil Part III in the after movie trailer.

As a kid I always preferred part 2 over 3, but as I've aged, I've come to appreciate 3 for the classic western it is. The original will always be best, but as a trilogy, it's fantastic. Can't believe they haven't done a 4th film or a remake or something like that. Especially with 2015 just a year away...

I... Don't think i've seen BTtF3. Worth watching yeah? Ive heard that from many sources.

I should watch Grand Budapest Hotel some point, my mum watched it and liked it which it struck me as not her type of film at all, so must be alright.

It's brilliant imo. Really really entertaining and visually interesting (excepting a couple of very minor missteps), not a dull moment in it. In a sort of wonky, Euro-quirk caper kinda way. Excellent metanarrative too. It's definitely something I'd recommend to people who don't like Wes And flicks. Instead of his usual half-funny lovable characters and silly slacker situations it's got a lot of genuine lol one liners and a nice little plot. Edited by kenshi_ryden
