Hot Heart
Lucy - So I'm very much undecided on this film. I don't love it, hell I might actually hate it, I just don't know. I think it was a bit of a mess, the character of Lucy was..not good, some of the imagery was baffling and I found the plot to be all over the place; but at the same time, I kind of enjoyed myself. I mean, what did you guys think? http://forum.pressxordie.com/topic/617-last-crap-movie-you-saw/?p=132525 In short: utter crap. My friend said he couldn't form an opinion or rate it because he's not sure what he just watched. Understandable, but to me that just means it was a waste of time and money.

I can see where he's coming from. It's been two days and I'm stull unsure on it. The film goes from the sublime to the ridiculous at an insane rate. Scarlett Johansson was fantastic though, of that I have no doubt. ----- The Ides of March - Second time viewing of this, a film I severely undervalued on my original watch. It's tight, well scripted and maintains me interest from the very first minute. Fantastic, truly. Opabinia
Jet Li's Fearless is the most recent, it's good but somewhat cheesy and fictional for what meant to be grounded in reality.
SomTervo
Saw Guardians of the Galaxy last night. "This but this" review: Star Wars on crack. The narrative isn't amazing, but gee golly jeepers is it a lot of fun. Chris Pratt's brilliant comic pacing and delivery, as usual... Delivers. I liked a lot of the little cameos. I think the narrative was a bit flawed because it was almost too close to being a comic. Not-that-spoilery example: Star-lord's backstory – ie the opening 5 minutes of the film – was great from a plot point of view, but in terms of pacing it was awful. Kids mum is dying, she dies, he runs outside sad, is abducted by aliens. What? In a 4-5 minute scene?! Then I realised: if this was in a comic, it would totally work. You'd be looking at about 4-5 pages, but because comics exist without time, you'd soak them in and lap them up, each panel standing in its own infinity. The pacing wouldn't be an issue at all. In cinema, each shot rushes into the next. There's no breathing space - so emotionally heavy story like that, being crushed into a couple of minutes, is really jarring. It's literally the only real complaint I have about the film and I think I forgive it because it's so true to comics' roots. danielpholt
There are no words to describe how much I love Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I've seen it 4 times now, and I can safely say that it's my favourite movie of all time. Even Michael Cera is enjoyable.
Mister Jack
I did like Scott Pilgrim, but I also read the books (which are better). I am always ranting about how much I hate Hollywood splitting movies up into multiple parts to sell more tickets, but I think in this case it would have actually been justified. Oh well. It's still an enjoyable movie, although I still can't say I would have picked Cera for the role.
TheFlyingGerbil
who did you picture for the role?
Mister Jack
I personally feel like they should have gone with someone who was unknown, someone new who we wouldn't recognize from a bunch of other movies or tv shows. Cera did an okay job, but he doesn't really have the energy or expressiveness to do the character the way I imagined him.
Hot Heart
I liked Cera. I found the Scott Pilgrim of the books too much of an unrepetant jerk whereas Cera at least makes him more likeable.
Mister Jack
He's kind of supposed to be jerk in the books, at least in the beginning. A big part of the story was Scott growing as a person by realizing he's not nearly as cool or nice as he thought he was and that his selfish actions have consequences that affect other people. I don't really blame the movie for not touching on that, since that's impossible to condense into a single film with everything else going on, but that's why I feel it should have been multiple films.
Hot Heart
Gone Girl Wow. Hard to say much without spoiling it, but I really liked this. Like a postmodern Hitchcock in a few ways (I won't elaborate how). Really smart story/satire about media representation, playing roles, relationships. Some great performances from all the cast, too, even with Affleck looking a little too Batman buff already.

SomTervo
Keep hearing good things. Sounds like that and Boyhood stole it this year 'It' being some kind of nondescript all-encompassing 'good cinema' award
danielpholt
Gone Girl. My only complaint is that the opening 30 or so minutes drags a little. That aside, It's a highly enjoyable thriller with good performances from the two leads, and some great performances from the rest of the gang. I thought Kim Dickins was fantastic as the lead investigator. Hopefully this'll get her some attention as she's universally fantastic in everything she's been in. Dat soundtrack also.
Mister Jack
Journey to the West (Stephen Chow version) Man, I loved this movie. It was sitting in my Netflix queue for a while but I never got around to actually watching it until today. It's loosely based on the old Chinese story, but this film is mostly about a pacifistic demon hunter who is trying to learn how to purify demons as opposed to killing them like all the other hunters do. It's funny, it's got some really cool action scenes, the demons are creative, and it's just all around a fun movie to watch. If you're not turned off by subtitles, give it a watch. If you are, then you're missing out.
deanb
Was at my Dads so had some time to watch a few films. Galaxy Quest Was one that has been on my list for a long time, so good to finally get around to watching it. Was pretty good send up of Star Trek fandom and that kind of show, nice little idea behind it all. Not quite the funniest films I've seen though, I think it was maybe a bit hyped. Good cast to carry it all though. The Worlds End I'm still mixed on if this was better or worse for knowing about Edgar Wrights little tricks, there's a bunch of stuff that's given away very early on. Ending was somewhat unexpected. I quite liked Nick Frost as the bar fighter, was fun to see. Maybe I could add Muppets Most Wanted here. Was a weird film for a childrens film. This fucking song was stuck in my head all weekend too.

Mal
Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale This is the international version so the film is considerably shorter at 2:30. The original two part-er clocks in at 4:30 apparently. Anyways, this movie is pretty badass. I can't exactly agree with the main character or the culture in certain aspects but yeah. Good watch. I think the two part-er might clarify some stuff better if you have the time. City of Life and Death I think I appreciate this movie better now after a second watch. At first the first part and the latter part kind of clashed with each other but now I think I can see them as together.
