danielpholt
Nobody saw it because Tom Cruise. When did Tom Cruise turn into box-office trash? I can't help but think the fact that it was a science fiction film was more damaging than Tom Cruise. I know what you're saying; but I still think Tom Cruise is okay. I enjoyed Oblivion. TheFlyingGerbil
It's not because he's no good anymore. cruise does a good job in his films certainly compared to a lot of action stars from his era, it's just people would go and see a film just because he was the lead a while ago now the world's moved on and audiences don't want a 'movie star' anymore. Everyone wants a hipster hero now, e.g. ones that don't look buff until they take their shirts off, a bit of vulnerability rather than inscrutability - Tom cruise is just not what's in style anymore.
deanb
And the whole crazy scientology stuff kinda dragged him down a fair few rungs.
Mr. GOH!
Which is too bad, because Cruise is a brilliant character actor. Absolute mess of a human being outside of his work, but I enjoy watching his zaniness on the big screen.
madbassman39
Knight and Day was a perfect comeback movie for the guy. It wasn't the best movie, but it featured a crazy older spy played by Tom Cruise. Made me feel like maybe there is room for his zaney scientoligist personality. Hot Heart
It's a good film, not great. I like Cruise in most films though, just that he is a wacko in real life. Definitely something to be said about 'The Death of the Movie Star' though. Max Landis (screenwriter, son of John) was talking about this the other day with regards to female stars; that besides Jennifer Lawrence and Kristen Stewart(?!), you don't have any real bankable female leads on which to hang new IPs or franchises. To me, it's interesting to examine because there has been somewhat of a shift and marketing tends to emphasise different things now. With regards to Edge of Tomorrow though, Cruise is most certainly not the typical hero, not invulnerable in any sense. He's a PR guy who gets in over his head and dies a lot. I have serious reservations about calling K Stewart a 'Bankable Star'. I don't dislike her as an actress, but I really don't think she's capable of drawing in a massive crowd.
SomTervo
Not in any kinda J-Law way at least. J-Law's my favourite thing to come out of Hollywood in ages. Probably one of the only things I've liked at all. Stewart is just, as so many note, kinda annoying. And wooden.
TheRevanchist
Stewart is a terrible actress. I was dragged to that teenie-bopper vampire movie by the wife. All Stewart did was stare blankly with her mouth open, like a total mouth breather. Fucking terrible.
TheMightyEthan
Has she been in anything even remotely successful other than Twilight?

This was said by someone who grew up as part of Hollywood though and is involved in pitching and now directing films, so he must know something.
TheRevanchist
Maybe he meant "bangable" (?!)? I already know that J-Law is a freak in the bed (thanks to The Fappening). And, Stewart has no problems banging married men who make films.
TheMightyEthan
Stewart is not even in the same bangability ballpark as J-Law.
TheFlyingGerbil
Has anyone seen Kirsten Stewart in anything other than Twilight because I often read she wasn't simply wooden in that but playing it that way deliberately, as it's how the character was in the books. Could just be Twilight apologists, but then they're not doing a good job if they're insulting the source material. I can only think of that snow white and the huntsman which I think I enjoyed well enough but can't really remember much about.
CorgiShinobi
I watched Snow White and the Huntsman recently (I'd put it in OK movie thread) because "nothing on TV right now." She wasn't wooden, but her acting was average. Any time it called for her to have a powerful voice, one that is commanding and respectful, it was like listening to a temperamental teen girl. When it wanted her to be melancholy, sure she could handle that, but any kind of action was lost on her character. danielpholt
She was solid in Adventureland and that film with Emile Hirsch when he goes and lives in the forest for a bit before he dies (no idea on the name - It's about that Supertramp fellow). TheFlyingGerbil
That film was Into The Wild. I don't remember her in that at all. I think that's why I'd struggle to call her a box office draw - she's so unmemorable even if she's not actually bad.
Mr. GOH!
She's in an Oscar bait picture called Camp X-Ray. Critics don't like the movie but say Stewart is excellent in it. Stewart being excellent at anything other than pouting and looking vacant would surprise me.
toxicitizen
I really wasn't sure in which thread to put this one but I watched Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie tonight. I decided on this one because I actually enjoyed it. It's fucking awful but if you like the AVGN videos then you'll most likely get some enjoyment out of it. I certainly don't regret the five bucks I paid to rent it on Vimeo. Hell, I spent more on movies that were significantly less entertaining. It's a decent way to kill two hours. Mister Jack
I doubt anyone who watches the AVGN movie is expecting it to be the next Clerks or anything, but the way I see it there's no real harm in being entertained by a cheesy B-movie from an indie director. It might not be entirely fair, but I give more slack to indie directors than I do to someone like Michael Bay because these low budget films more often than not are a labor of love, and even if it's not very good from an objective viewpoint I can't help but find it kind of charming that a small group of people put all that work into creating something they thought we'd enjoy. I actually plan to get his movie on DVD. I usually enjoy his videos and he's been providing them for free all this time so I figured supporting his dream of making movies was the least I could do in return. toxicitizen
Yeah, that's why I wanted to pay for the rental as opposed to just downloading it. I'll probably grab it on DVD or whatever at some point, too.

My last good film: Carnage. I greatly under appreciated comedy. One of my favourites from the last 5 years for sure.
FMW
How do we feel about Man of Tai Chi here? I feel like it's a very well produced and directed film... and the acting is pretty good (I mean, assuming your on board with Keanu Reeves, which really everyone should be)... but it just kinda left me feeling empty. Like I'm not sure what I was supposed to take away from it, or even feel really. It's so well crafted in order to achieve... what? I eventually decided that this goes in the "good movies" thread because I'm still thinking about it trying to figure that out.
TheRevanchist
@Dan: I saw Panic Room in the theater when it came out. I wish I had locked myself in a room to save me from spending money on that shit fest. Even Jodie Foster couldn't make me not want to go primordial and fling my poo at the screen.
