There Will Be Blood

So this film is great. It has a great, mostly speechless, opening sequence where actions were spoke volumes. It makes you pay attention to details and to think about the stuff that are going on. I'm still trying to work through that though.

Fun fact: Union Oil built an oil tank farm in San Luis Obispo during the movie's time period that would have held the oil that Daniel would have drilled, if he was real. The tank farm though, in real life, blew up in one of the worst USA/California man-made disasters (early ones anyways). On Google Maps, you can still see the outline of the tank farm along Tank Farm Rd. The reach of the disaster is still around today with the ground nearby unfit for use besides grazing land at best. Further out there are commercial lots, an airport and a whole lot of empty land.

Interstellar

Holy fuck. While some of the science are odd but it is such a fun movie. There are really no dull moments in my opinion. Some people's actions you had to question but I think I could give them a pass with it considering what the hell they were doing and looking at.

Big Hero 6.

Fuck, I adore this movie.  I loved it from start to finish.  The action is good, the writing is hilarious, and Baymax is the most endearing robot I've seen in a movie since Wall-e.  There's so much imagination and just flat-out coolness on display here.  In fact, there's a part of me that suspects Disney is trying to replicate the success of Frozen, but with boys this time.  I wouldn't be surprised if they succeed, because this movie has everything boys love: robots, fighting, comedy, superpowers...God damn, I can't wait for the bluray.

I've heard that the visuals are great but that the story itself isn't anything special. Basically that it's decent.

Watched Edge of Tomorrow last night. It was actually good, and had the coolest alien design I've seen since the xenomorph.

Just watched Big Hero 6 today. Also really good, though way more sad parts, and way sadder ones, than I was expecting.

Interstellar

Certain plot decisions are divisive among the viewers, but I didn't care. It was just a brilliant fucking movie for me and I need to own it. I loved everything about it, besides one minor subplot.

Big Hero Six

It was solid and decent. The heart-tugging moments didn't hit me as hard though because I've seen it done so many times before that it just really didn't phase me. To be fair though, I watched this after Interstellar which had the mother of all relationships to cry over.

Literally my favourite film of all time. A masterpiece imo. Another one of those "the more you watch it the more you see" films. Like the character work is just unbelievable. Daniel Plainview says about a million things you need to watch it 3-4 times to properly notice or hear, really subtle fucking things which are amazing. And dat ending. Took me two watches to 'get it', but by golly. Ingenious.

(By 'get' I literally just mean appreciate. There's no big plot hidden in there or anything.)

Saw it in the cinema too. Mind-blowingly powerful cinematography and music.

Went to see Interstellar saturday night.

I'd normally consider myself a pretty big fan of Nolan but holy shit, this is his best one yet and by far. The story was great and they clearly did their research when it comes to the physics behind it all, so that's always nice. But the most memorable part for me had to be the soundtrack. It's just so fucking good and adds so much tension to what's happening on-screen.

I also highly recommend seeing it in 70mm IMAX because some of the shots look so fucking amazing that it would be doing the movie a disservice to experience it any other way.

Birdman

Well the reviews weren't lying this was amazing. I don't think they could have chosen a more perfect cast that have dealt with the issues their characters are dealing with.

The film does this great thing where, even if it isn't a single take the whole time, it feels like it because it's one camera just walking around. And it's amazing and damn impressive.

Saw Interstellar at iMax last weekend.

Man. This is one of my favourite movies. I've ever seen.

For some people it definitely won't be all that. My dad gave it a 7.6/10. It's got some aspects which are too brave, too ambitious, and probably harm it in many people's eyes.

But I've never seen a movie which captured hard-sci-fi concepts I've been reading in novels since I was a kid. Until this one.

Fucking loved it. For my personal tastes, 10/10.

I teared up a few times, too - the gf was full-blown sobbing at a couple of parts

Edit: I love how, in an era when studios turn simple stories into three-part epics, Nolan comes along and drops a movie which is basically a trilogy in one film. Like, Interstellar is 169 minutes long, and feels like it has about 7 acts. All of which are dense, brimming with story and character, and are entertaining. Goddamn I loved it. The £12 at iMax was worth it - and I didn't think I'd ever say that.

Snowpiercer

Really enjoyable film here, but unfortunately it gets a bit bogged down in its final act. That aside, certainly one of the more enjoyable new releases this year. Great cast, interesting setting and some very nice shots. Shame about the somewhat iffy CGI but that didn't ruin it for me.
