Last Good Movie You Saw

I too saw Big Hero 6 and I thought it was perfectly okay. A ringing endorsement I'm sure you'll agree.

I also saw Jurassic World, which I also thought was okay. I'll watch a sequel for sure, here's hoping they give us some characters to connect with, and maybe ditch the 12A rating so stupid parents don't take their 4 year old daughters to see it. Great job parents.

We should talk about that ending. I've seen some rushed climax's in my time (ahem), but man that was dumb.

Mr. Holmes. Ian McKellan plays a 93-year old Sherlock Holmes, in 1946 or so, battling senility at his country home 30 years after retiring from detective work. The plot follows his attempts to remember his final case in order to write a true account to correct Watson's sensationalized version (in the movie, Watson wrote the Sherlock Holmes stories, not Arthur Conan Doyle). Between his remembrances, he forms a relationship with his housekeeper's 8-10 year old son, who is fascinated by Holmes, both for the famous stories and for Holmes's current passion for beekeeping (which the movie implies Holmes pursued due to his hope that the pseudoscience-supported senility-reversing effects of royal jelly were true).

McKellan is excellent both as the 93 year-old and the 63 year-old Holmes; in particular, he wonderfully juxtaposes the older version's general physical and mental frailty with moments of razor-sharp and crystal-clear Holmesean deductions without the transition seeming jarring or unnatural.  It's a generally quite film about Holmes learning to forge real relationships with other human beings.

Justice League: Gods & Monsters

Pretty neat riff on stuff. I think I've mentioned I'm a sucker for the Elseworlds/What-if stuff. It's clearly a darker world given the Justice League here are Suicide Squad at best, given they vaporise people, suck their blood dry n cleave in two. I think it worked quite well in the format it had, managing to include backstory on them all without horribly messing up the film, and the overall plot didn't totally outstay its welcome. It could maybe have worked as a TV series but I think it'd just get silly or strained.

Only minor..well not really a plothole since it's more something from the other books but: Not sure why Bruce Wayne wasn't Batman, and where Wonder Woman was since Superman is the only one to be "different". Also the High Fathers actions too, though I guess most New Gods stuff I know of tends to focus around Darksied so maybe he's not as "good" in normal continuity either.

(also watched Princess Bride with little sister n chunk of Ghostbusters but doubt I need to give much of a review)

The Man From U.N.C.L.E

Pretty good film. Not the worlds greatest but pretty enjoyable. It did get a bit muddy towards the end with

The east German lass and her affiliations. It sorta cleared itself up but for a while it was "so what's her plan"

There was a sorta comic-book style panel montage of sorts that was kinda neat, almost wore it welcome but ended in a quite nice Lego style co-op splitscreen thing. In fact a few nice little shots throughout.

Was nicely ticking along throughout, pretty neat pacing, some laughs, some action, drama etc. Good movie, enjoyable.

It drew quite an older crowd (like 50s+). I imagine due to watching the TV show back in the day maybe?I wonder if The Avengers(not that avengers) had a similar audience.

Oh in booking the film I found that despite the 3 storey high (and this is cinema/entertainment complex storeys, so about 60 foot tall) poster for Fantastic Four on the outside of the building the only showings for this week are in the "Studio" screen, which is the bookable for private events 60 seater screen on the top floor. It's quite a tidy little cinema, I watched Avengers(yes that avengers) in for the staff première, always figured it'd be cool to have a personal film showing there one day.

I've been doing well going through my list of late. Primarily cos I like to put something on to watch having tea, but while I have been doing Game of Thrones I'm not sure I want to watch "Viper vs Mountain" while eating.

Fantastic Mr Fox

Had been on my list some time, though moved up some more due to really liking Grand Budapest n wanting some more Wes Anderson. It was pretty damn good. A bit funky with the extension to the ending of the film, but I guess the book is kinda short, and the ending might be a bit anti-climatic for some. Nice cast for VA, really liked Michael Gambon as Bean. And yeah, usual Wes Anderson style throughout but now for kids. Might introduce my siblings to it.

Leon: The Professional

Pretty damn good film. I've seen bits of it around the web, mainly the "Everybody" bit. Figured I'd give it a shot after the shit show that was Lucy. I'm thinking my list is gonna be pretty good. My only minor foible with it is the sorta weird affection Matilda shows towards Leon but it's a pretty core part of the film, and I guess cos end of the day she's always gonna be a bit fucked up after her life. But the ending is blah blah symbolism n roots n what not so could be good for her.

That plant saw some shit.

Every film watch consists of three parts:

The first part is called "the pledge". The second part is called "the turn". The third act...

The Prestige

I went into this knowing the "trick", but it didn't really spoil it for me, it was kept well hidden throughout. Very good to know the core of the film and still be surprised. I'd started watching it years back and I think I got to Jackman and Serkis meeting the first time and stopped for some reason.

What was quite good is I presumed Bale was using the same trick as Jackman, not that Tesla had accidentally made a new trick for him, so the reveal, chisel n all, was quite good at the end.

My only issue with it is that it's Bales original over confidence that started the whole affair, leading to Jackmans obsession and eventual demise. Yet he (sorta) gets to keep his life n girl.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

So this one I saw some time ago, but despite knowing I watched it I couldn't remember anything apart from the lake stuff vaguely. I can't even remember why I can't remember the film.

Anywho, this is the kind of film that tickles me, it embraces its lack of 4th wall. All fits together kind of nice, nips along nicely, good jokes n chemistry n so on. Good film.

One of my favourite films, and one that I think got RDJ the Iron Man job. He's basically playing a not-rich Tony Stark RDJ. Also Val Kilmer is fucking hilarious in this.

I just saw The Bourne Supremacy. Lacks the excitement of the first film; but it has its moments. Can't wait to get back to the 3rd in the trilogy.

Ghost In The Shell

I imagine I probably need to read the manga an immerse myself in the lore. In fact at some point I may. Another pretty film, the only anime on my list at the moment I believe, though I should probably add some Ghibli. The rate I'm devouring stuff especially.

I can certainly see the Matrix influencers in it, I could see it being a film that would do well if made in live action for modern audiences. I think it could maybe do with a bit of tweaking on the slow parts, it is a bit weird with like a few bits of a ton of action followed almost immediately by slow scenes of dialogue or in one case just panning images. But that's the style I guess. And obviously it's all rather important but I imagine you could weave some of the "what is life, what is memory or reality" stuff into action in an intelligent way.

I haven noticed anime really really likes the tree of life.

Not long ago I used to think "how is daniel watching all these films", but now I'm sort of on a roll it's a bit easier than I thought it would be. Maybe he was some kind of robot, but would he go so far to test this theory as Domhnall Gleeson in Ex Machina?

So I didn't go into this one knowing to much apart from it being about AI and maybe she goes crazy at some point. I thought it was pretty good film, some good suspense, especially the almost cabin fever CEO guy just being all over the place. I thought it delved quite well into the AI side of things; how would you act around them if they're imperceptible from humans, the small ways (like implanted knowledge) they might be different and so on. Oh and "if they're so good at being human, maybe I'm not human" part of it all, which was a good touch though not totally delved into as deeply. I'd say they wrapped that up a bit too quickly (and I had to look away at the razor stuff cos I'm squeamish like that). I figured about the servant fairly early on. Given how he treated her n remarks made, and well I guess cliche's too.

I'll be honest the ending kind of lost me

on why she left him locked up in the facility to, I guess, starve to death.

(oh apart from maybe the whole "lets hack all the phones voice n video feeds for emotional information" part Google are most likely doing a lot of the stuff this guy did in the film to make his AI. Maybe not the sex part.)

She doesn't need to be an AI to make those decisions. Although Gleeson is presented as the protagonist in the film, all of his actions and decisions are premised on the robot being an object that exists for his use/pleasure. Whereas she's just a piece of fuckable tech to Oscar Isaac, she's a piece of fuckable tech with feelings for Gleeson. She's still just an instrument to Gleeson, although he's more romantic about it. He's actually one of the two villains of the movie. Think of it this way; if she were human, Gleeson would still be complicit in her imprisonment, so of course she resents him.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Man, I remember people throwing a fit because the female lead was "focused on," but Max was in the movie just as much. Pretty solid, though I think I should go back and watch the other films and see how it compares as a Mad Max film. It was pretty exciting and brutal either way.

EDIT: Forgot to say I liked the integration of that crazy music truck playing parts of the movie's soundtrack.

An AI doesn't make human decisions.

Pretty sure that's part of the point of a Turing test. If the decisions made were out of place the AI would fail the test because it would not seem human.

I think we might have watched a different film.

It's worth noting it's Isaac that made them all be "fuckable", and as we learn later is pretty much what he does. He's the one that even pushes the idea upon Gleeson

As for being complicit in her imprisonment... he's the one that orchestrates her escape. Watchmen style at that; "I did it yesterday!". Which is why it seems odd that after all that she'd just walk right out the building, rather than go open the door for him. Especially given the "mary in the black and white room" stuff, he's her main link to anything outside of the room.

Anywho, as folks following me on Twitter might be aware I watched Godzilla last night. Good film. Though it did feel much longer than it was.

There was a part I nearly pulled a major "hey now fucking stupid plothole" but they did explain which is: why if they know it trashed their powerplant did they keep the cocoon around for 15 years. Cos it's sucking up the radiation they explain later. Maybe a bit too later, but at least they covered it. Weird that they knew nuclear bombs didn't hurt but actually fed them, and yet figured they could just zap it with a bit of lightning n kill it.

The sound in some of this is great for the monsters. Especially the atomic breath. I imagine it would have been a great film to hear in cinemas.

The ending was really bad mind "King of the Monsters - Our Cities Saviour". Bleurgh.
