Hot Heart
If you want proof of how seriously we take the Olympics, here, check this BBC comedy. (I'm aware Australia had the concept first, before their hosting of the Olympics) Edited March 27, 2011 by Hot Heart
Mr W Phallus
Ahah I've never heard this before (or the Australian version) but they both look pretty good.
Hot Heart
First two episodes are up on iPlayer. It's quite good.
TheFlyingGerbil
I know it's a bit late but just a quick point: the illegal Iraq war elicited the largest demonstration to take place in UK history. So yeah, they did protest about it.
Thursday Next
Also note that the Coalition didn't raise tuition fees. They just allowed Universities to do so. As for awesome opening ceremonies... let us not forget the amazing shows our favourite former colony put on: Bra-flipping-vo. Also, Dean, a more relevant protest (i.e. Students, fees, protests...) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/2541075.stm On balance, this Coalition is not so bad thus far. They seem to be dealing with the economy ok, time will tell on that one and personally I'm not really feeling the effects of the economic downturn (one of the benefits of having paid all those tuition fees I guess). Fuel prices are a drag, but that's as much because the Opec cartel are fleecing the whole planet as it is because of fuel duty. I like the leadership of Clegg and Cameron, and I find Ed Miliband to be entirely unelectable (they should've gone with David) as Ed is pretty much a Union stooge and had no leadership presence. deanb
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_Alternative_Vote_referendum,_2011 I'm assuming most of you have gotten the poll card for this? Thoughts? I'm for it, but I don't know too much on it so maybe someone might provide reasons for sticking with the current "first past the post" system. Certainly allows for much more granular method.

Mal
That system allowed Jean Quan to become mayor of Oakland. There's still a debate on how good the system is.
deanb
First past the post meant we had no government for about a week, and potentially not the government the population wanted.
Thursday Next
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13047890 Some old biddy gets ragged on by our previous PM, makes a few headlines. Am I now supposed to care every time she makes a comment about or around a politician. She asked if Clegg was happy with the governments decisions. He said that any government would have to make tough choices, she says "I've just been listening to you on the television, and I've listened to you on the radio, and that's just the same speech you gave an hour ago." Why wasn't the headline "Old Woman Points out that Politician is Consistent in his Messaging"? Still, maybe she has some sort of insight into the current situation... "It's gone wrong," she said, "Let's face it, it's all gone wrong." Great. Thanks for that. Any other pearls for us?

SomTervo
Damn, I know loads of Uni folk who didn't get to vote because of that. Up here in scotland we had the Scottish Parliament vote too, of course. It's brutal. We have one of the best voting systems- but we double it up on itself really arbitrarily and confusingly, which leads to lots of spoilt ballots and demands for recounts. You have a constituency MSP- like the "Westminster" constituencies. You have a "Regional" MSP. Or rather, 6 of them. There are 6 for each region, region's basically being the same as constituencies. There are 6 regional list MSP's under the PR List system- and while this is good for representing the countries votes at Hollyrood, it means in every constituency there are basically 7 MSP's, one that everyone knows and hlods accountable, and 6 who are just faceless job titles that are basically not held accountable to anything. Messed up. Although the 6 List MSP's do bulk up for the empty seats in parliament, and make sure the % of people who vote for a party get that % of seats at Hollyrood. I don't know why I'm explaining this as many probably know already. Still, on the one hand I'm looking forward to the Tory's being raped- on the other hand I'm not looking forward to the stealth-Tory SNP (a bit harsh maybe) getting into power. SNP aren't all that bad, but they are master politicians and Alex Salmond is a master rhetorician. He will win any argument by seeming genuine and throwing out random shit that makes the other parties look bad. The Scottish labour leader Iain Gray is a good guy, but faffs about in the public eye, the Lib Dem leader is a nice guy but a tool, and the Scottish Conservatives leader is actually great, Anabel Goldie. What did everyone vote on AV? I nearly lost a friend today by arguing vehemently over it. I'm praying Yes comes through, but it probably won't. SomTervo
#yestoAV YEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS ...To AV. Doesn't look like we're going to pull it out of the bag though. I hope, but the minority of politicians who support No have got most of the British media on their side.
Thursday Next
I also voted "Yes".
Chris
The AV referendum turnout was apparently "higher than expected" (between 35% and 51%), which definitely points to a "No". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-13280105 The BBC predicts 70% for 'No'. Pretty resounding, and proves how pointless the whole thing was.
King Jimmeh
The majority of the UK population are idiots and find it difficult to cross boxes, let alone understand how to rank candidates...
